The global titanium dioxide market size was valued at US$ 15.76 billion in 2018 and is expected to witness a CAGR of 8.7% from 2019 to 2025, according to a report by Grand View Research, Inc. Escalating demand for lightweight vehicles owing to strict emission policies is expected to fuel the market growth over the coming years.

Mr. YC Chen, Managing Director, Chemours Titanium Technologies Business Division, Greater China said, "As a matter of fact, the TiO2 market in China is a very important business for Chemours' Titanium Division. In the past, we adopted our own past successful development strategies

in the mature markets to grow business in China market. In recent years, due to continuous diversification in applications as well as advances in technologies, the TiO2 market in China has become more significant and unique than other regions. In the future, the TiO2 market in China, in terms of scaling and growth, is expected to be a leading market globally. Affected by a year long Sino-US trade dispute, the growth rate of TiO2 has slightly slowed down in China's coatings market though still at a relatively stable level. But the growing commercial and residential construction sector coupled with rising preference to lightweight and electric vehicles (EVs) is anticipated to augment the demand for TiO2."

Chemours will showcase its TiO2 technologies in the coming CHINACOAT2019. Customer preferences are shifting more and more towards products that have low concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), that produce few emissions, or that represent bio-based solutions. Evonik offers many solutions that meet customers’ specific needs and that are in line with increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

These blocked VESTANAT® polyurethane crosslinkers can be applied for both interior and exterior coating applications within the can- and coil-coating industry."

"VESTANAT® B 1186 A is a cycloaliphatic blocked polyurethane crosslinker for interior BPA-NI can coatings. According to FCN No. 1268, it is eligible for food contact applications. B 1186 A enables improved sterilization resistance, yields highly flexible coatings, and is suitable for 1K storage-stable approaches."

In response to current environmental improvement regulations, Evonik is also developing a series of waterborne, low-emission technologies that help customers upgrade their formulations and find new, more efficient approaches. "Ancamine® 2738 is a solvent-free, low-emission curing agent suitable for protective coatings that meet FDA requirements and future trends alike. Ancamine® 2792 delivers excellent anti-corrosive properties and improves productivity of surface-tolerant protective coatings. In flooring applications, Evonik has developed a new generation of epoxy cementious concrete technology that satisfies formulators’ needs. Anquamine® 287 makes it easy for customers to formulate their own ECC systems with good cement compatibility, mechanical performance, cracking resistance and easy handling properties," continued Miss Iris Zhen.

Mr. Ai Mijun said, "We believe demand for high performance and versatile materials is bound to drive the development of existing coatings and paint industry. Downstream customers are increasingly demanding higher performance coatings. In addition to meeting basic and environmental requirements, tailor-made coating products are able to meet specific requirements of customers from different sectors. Downstream customers may have higher demand on special coating products with different functions such as anti-static, high temperature resistance, anti-vibration and anti-noise. Talking about what are the factors challenging the paint and coatings industry at the moment, Mr. Ai Mijun said, "First of all, environmentally friendly water-based paint and coatings have received extensive attention in recent years. 個主要領域：環保塗料和工藝，及高性能和多功能塗料。可

理解的是，成本仍然是控制參與程度、選擇技術及產品開發

速度的重要因素。在各行業產業中，建築塗料對成本 / 性能

比較敏感。這種趨勢理性被認為是應對當地、國家及國際對

塗料健康相關的房地產政策，及對更高性能和不斷增加的全球競爭需求的增加。環保「特性」同時被考慮，而且是任

何產品研發項目的重點，亦是所有新產品的基本要求。

從廣義上講，環保及高性能多功能塗料的兩個主要研

發領域融合在一起，共享「高性能和可持續塗料」的共同目

標。某些情況下，通過多功能塗料技術，可解決高性能和可

持續塗料的問題。顯然，可在較低膜厚度下起作用的塗層

不需底漆或中間塗層，也不需重塗，與具有相同 VOC 水平

相應舉動。1月18 日，葉氏化工宣布將其紫荊花制漆（上海）

有限公司以 2.7 億元出售給上海重固新雲尚置業有限公司。1月24日，PPG 將於2020至2022年建設華南研發生產基地，

January 24, PPG announced to build a South China R&D and production base from 2020 to 2022 with a project investment of RMB 620 million. On February 14, it was reported that Shenzhen Youwei Chemical Company and Yihua Group will invest RMB 8 billion to build the world's largest light-curing new material industrial park. On March 4, the Zhangjiagang City Government announced Hempel will invest US$ 170 million to build a new paint project. On April 17, Nippon acquired Australia's Dulux. On April 26, Nippon announced the acquisition of shares in 9 group companies including Turkish construction and industrial coatings company Betek Boya ve Kimya Sanayi A.S. and its subsidiaries. On May 28, Guangdong Nippon Changrunfa Technology Materials Co., Ltd. and Jiade Baoman New Technology Materials Co., Ltd. staged a strategic cooperation signing ceremony. On June 3, DuPont announced the company had made a new appearance as an independent company as the agricultural division was successfully split and separated from former Dow DuPont Company. It also means the world's largest chemical enterprise, Dow DuPont officially separated.

20 世紀過度依賴塗料化石資源的趨勢似乎不會持續

In recent years, the global research and development in coatings, paint and related industries has focused on two main areas of environmentally friendly coatings and processes, and high

performance and multifunctional coatings. Understandably, the cost is still the most important factor in controlling the extent of participation, technology of choice and rate and speed of the product development. Among the industry sectors, architectural coatings are more sensitive to cost/performance ratio. Rational behind this trend are thought to be due to local, national and international coating heath related property policies, increasing demands for higher performance and ever-increasing global competition. Environmentally friendly "properties" are considered in parallel and are still the focus of any product research and development projects and are carried out as a requirement for all new products.

In a broader sense, the two main research and development areas of environmentally friendly and high-performance multifunctional coatings merge together and share a common goal of "high performance and sustainable coatings." In some cases, both high performance and sustainable coatings can be addressed by multifunctional coatings technologies. It is clear that a coating that can function at lower film thickness, does not require a primer or intermediate coat, and also does not require recoating, emits less VOC than an ordinary coating with the same VOC level. Therefore, multifunctional coatings such as self-stratifying, self-healing, corrosion sensing, easy clean, etc., not only provide same functionality as ordinary coatings also due to their unique performance are both environmentally friendly and high performance.

It seems likely the 20th century trend of excessive reliance on fossil resources for coatings will not continue into the

21st century. First, the fossil resources themselves are not finite and are not uniformly distributed on the planet. The second concern for un-sustainability of petroleum-based coatings is economic. Coating products, raw materials and coating processes are known to be price sensitive and highly competitive which will mandate search for alternatives that are more abundant on the planet. The third reason for environmentally friendly coating is the risk to safety, health and the environment.

To accomplish either of the above technology trends, the three main requirements are availability of suitable raw materials, competitive costs and technical expertise. Balancing the three requirements has been a major challenge for most coatings and paint manufacturers.

Reducing or eliminating VOC from raw materials, coatings and paints has been in works for some time; however, what has made the task even more challenging is broadening the goal to include "sustainability" aspects as well. This means abandoning the use of some non-VOC high boiling point petroleum-based solvents, certain metal catalysts, including the use of suspected well-known raw materials such as Bis-phenol-A and short chain fluoro materials.

In conclusion, both of the current global trends are in line with global industrial, and living styles and standards. To accomplish such goals, the most important step is paradigm shift or out-of-the-box thinking.
