ARCHDIOCESAN NEWS
Good Friday Second Collection in support of the Holy Land
Each year on Good Friday, our Archdiocese is called to support Christians in the Holy Land. Many Christians in the Holy Land depend on the collection for their lives. As a Pontifical collection requested by Pope Francis, the annual Good Friday Collection helps to maintain not only the Holy Places above all, but also the pastoral, welfare, educational and social works that the Church carries out to the benefit of the Christian brothers and sisters and the local population.
Windows into Heaven: An Introductory Guide to Icons
On Friday, April 26, the Ministries and Outreach Office will launch a bi-monthly series of talks, lectures and experiences that will be held on Friday nights at the John Paul II Pastoral Centre. Our first event features Steve Knight, the President of the Epiphany Sacred Arts Guild and an iconographer who has written over 125 icons. He studied iconography at the Iconographic Institute in Mt. Angel, Oregon, and under Don Gianluca Busi of Bolognia, Italy. Register for FREE at www.rcav.org/event/into-th...
The Lived Experience of People with Dementia Presentation
The Catholic Physicians' Guild will host this event on Saturday, April 27, at 6 pm at St. Pius X Church in North Vancouver. Presented by Dr. Romayne Gallagher, MD, CCFP(PC), FCFP. For more information, contact the Catholic Physicians' Guild at 604-240-2725.
Understanding the Liturgy
The Catholic Mass is the central act of worship in the life of a Catholic, but few are aware of what it all means. While some Catholics may know the prayers and responses said in the liturgy, many do not know their significance or historical development. The true beauty of the Mass is seen when you break it down into its components and explain each of the steps in a way that you might understand more clearly. The course Overview of the Liturgy explains the Catholic Mass so that you will have a better understanding of what it is, what it does and how it is essential to Christian growth. Register for this course at Spring Institute on Saturday, April 27th from 10am – 4pm at Holy Cross Secondary, Surrey. Course cost is $40 and includes lunch. For more information and registration visit: www.rcav.org/oc-spring.
What Catholics Should Know About Their Faith
An informational and enriching introduction to the Catholic faith and theology, this course will enable you to take greater responsibility in promoting the life and mission of the Church. This 2-part course covers the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church - Creed, Morality, Prayer and Sacraments. Part II explores the moral life and prayer. Course cost is $40 and includes lunch on Saturday, April 27th from 10am – 4pm at Holy Cross Secondary, Surrey. For more information and registration visit: www.rcav.org/oc-spring.
Let's fill our Easter Baskets!
Time to give our guests staying with us at our emergency homeless shelter NEW pairs of socks and underwear! We host over 120 men every night in our beds who benefit greatly by having fresh clothes. Please bring your items to our shelter on 828 Cambie Street, at the JPII Pastoral Centre.
Request for New or Gently Used Items
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is getting ready for their Annual Yard Sale on Saturday, May 25th and needs your treasures! Proceeds will go towards helping to fund our outreach efforts. Donate new or gently used items that are still in good condition (toys, household items, clothes, craft supplies, tools, etc., but no large furniture items, car seats, cribs or electronics please). Donations can be dropped off at Holy Family Parish on Wednesdays after the 9 a.m. Mass until noon or on Sundays after the 10:30 am Mass. Pick-up can also be arranged. Food donations are also welcome on the day of the garage sale. Please contact Sherri Marcotte 604-710-4269
Stewardship Reflections
“He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed
by the devil, for God was with him.” (Acts 10:38)
On this Easter Sunday, open your hearts to receive God’s love, mercy and forgiveness. God is love and we are made in His
image and likeness. Let our lives reflect His light to others. Pray for guidance on how to live your life and give thanks for all that
He has given you.

Easter Sunday
The tomb is empty! This says everything about this day. It is not empty because someone has taken his body; it is
not empty because he has decomposed beyond recognition; it is not empty because he really did not die and so was able to
recover enough to escape with the help of others. No, none of these reasons satisfy us or make any sense. The tomb is
empty because Jesus Christ – True God and True Man – has defeated death. Jesus died, he really died and was dead …
and I will say it again … he was dead! However, death could not hold Jesus Christ in the tomb. By his own power he was
able to raise himself from the dead. Can you figure this out? I certainly cannot! Jesus said in John 10:18: “No one takes it
from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again; this charge I
have received from my Father." The “it” is his life.
This day highlights the reason why life is worth living. We are not dust in the wind (like that old Kansas song
says). No, we are so much more than dust in the wind. We are immortal, and our bodies will be remade on the last day of
this world and reunited to our soul. You and I, while we have the precious gift of time, need to ensure that our reunion
will be one in heaven and not forever away from God.
The resurrection is our assurance that life does continue to exist beyond physical death. And so on this holy day,
one that is filled with indescribable joy, let us give thanks to our Lord for offering himself in sacrifice for us and making
available the gift of overcoming the power of sin and sharing in the resurrection of the body. Finally, let us ask Jesus to
help us be faithful disciples of his, so that this gift that he has died for will not be in vain for you and me. May Mary, the
greatest of all disciples, help us to love her Son in some way as she did.
I want to extend a sincere welcome to our new Catholic brothers and sisters and their children. You have taken the
RCIA here at Corpus Christi, shared in our worship throughout the year in preparation for this day, and now you can
receive Jesus in the Eucharist and sacrament of Penance. I pray that you will always know that Corpus Christi is your
spiritual home.
It is also important to thank the many groups and some individuals persons who have helped the two priests
prepare for Easter: 1) Joseph Chiu who teaches RCIA Cantonese and Mandarin when needed; 2) All choir members who
work hard throughout the year; 3) Counters of the collection whose work is hidden, but so important; 4) Ushers who assist
in various ways; 5) Greeters; 6) The ladies who take care of the flowers and linens in the sanctuary; 7) Readers and Extra
Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion; 8) Altar Servers. Thank you, all of you, for your service to God and the
community of Corpus Christi.
On Saturday the 27th we will celebrate the Mass of 1st Communion for the children of our parish community,
children from Corpus Christi School and PREP. The children have already received Jesus in the sacrament of Penance, or
Confession. It is so very important that we pray for these children and their families, that they will remain faithful to the
gift of the Jesus in the sacraments. St Thomas Aquinas stated that God has bestowed upon us the dignity of causality.
The Lord allows us to participate in in a derivative way in his causality, an example of this which speaks to what is
happening on Saturday 27th, is that God has entrusted to parents the task of ensuring their children know who Jesus is and
keeping them in relationship with Jesus. This means many things, one of which is to bring them to Mass and ensure they
receive the sacraments. This will only happen if you allow it to happen. This is a great privilege and an equally great
responsibility.
