Vincent Li v CRE8IVE (Open F 1)

So the Open final would feature the Chinese team CRE8IVE and the Shanghai/Hong Kong combination captained by Vincent Li. Three sets of 16 boards to decide the 2018 Hong Kong Inter-City champions.Vincent Li gained an overtrick IMP on the first board, while Board 2 was a flat club game for E/W. The first significant swing came on Board 3.

Qi Shen, for Vincent Li, was just short of an opening bid with the West hand so passed and was probably glad to have done so when she saw a 1] opening on her left. Wenfei Wang overcalled 1[ and Yan Liu made a negative double. However, when Shen contented herself with a simple spade raise, nobody had anything else to say. Liu led the queen of diamonds, Wenfei winning the ace and playing a heart to the ace followed by the queen of hearts to the king and ruff. She continued by cashing the king of diamonds for a club pitch then ruffing a diamond and leading a winning heart for a club discard from hand. Liu ruffed that and returned a low club so Chunhui Dong took the king and ace then switched to a heart. Wenfei ruffed with the eight and, when that held the trick, ruffed her last diamond with the queen and led a spade to the nine. That forced the ace and she had an overtrick for +140.

In the other room, Zhanjie Jin, for CRE8IVE, opened the West hand with 2], weak with five hearts and a four-card or longer minor, and Shuguang Bi responded 3}, pass or correct. That ended the auction and Weimin Wang led a trump, Vincent Li winning the king and ace then playing a third round to Weimin's queen. weimin switched to the queen of diamonds to declarer's ace and now Bi led a spade to the queen and a second spade to the jack, king and ace. Weimin led a heart through and when the finesse failed the contract was one down for –100 and 6 IMPs to Vincent Li.

This one was all about West's valuation of the hand.

Shen opened at the one level, which looks normal to me, and Wenfei raised straight to game. Dong led a trump. Shen won and drew the remaining trumps then led a diamond to the king and ace and a second diamond to ten and queen. Dong cashed the ace of clubs, didn't like what he saw from partner, and switched to a spade. Liu won that but Shen had the rest for a quick and painless +620.Jin opened a multi 2{ – surely the hand is too good for this with 6-3-3-1 shape and such a good main suit? Bi responded 2]. pass or correct, and that was that. Weimin led a diamond to the king and ace. Bi drew trumps and played a diamond so Li won and returned a spade to the queen and king. Weimin switched to the ten of clubs and that ran to declarer's jack, after which dummy's clubs went away on the diamonds; 11 tricks for +200 but 9 IMPs to Vincent Li.

On Board 6 both Souths declared 3[, Weimin being successful while Liu failed by a trick to give Vincent Li 5 IMPs, and there was more to come on Board 7.

Shen doubled then, when Wenfei could only respond 1]. left her opponents to it. Wenfei led the nine of spades against 1NT, Shen ducking so Dong won in hand with the king and ran the six of diamonds to the jack. Shen played a low club to the queen and king, ducked Dong's spade play, but won the next spade and returned a low heart. Liu had to get that right to avoid going down and duly did so by playing low from the dummy. Wenfei won the ace and switched to a club so Shen could take three of those but Dong had the rest; +90 but 5 IMPs to Vincent Li.

I don't know what was going on in the other room, where Jin seemed to bid like a man with an extra ace and more and ended up in 3NT. A diamond to the ace and a diamond back to his king left him with nowhere to go. He tried a low club and, when there was no flicker on his left, put in dummy's eight and lost to the nine. Weimin led a low spade through to Li's queen and Li cashed the ten of diamonds then played his remaining diamond to Weimin's queen. Weimin switched back to spades, leading the jack and Jin winning the ace and ducking another club. Now Weimin tried the jack of hearts, covered all around, and Jin had two hearts and two clubs for six tricks in all so was down three for –300.

Board 8 was a well-fitting club slam for N/S, but neither pair really got to grips with the hand and both stopped in game. Vincent Li gained 1 IMP for 3NT+2 against 5}+1 and led by 27-0 at the midpoint in the set.

Shen/Wenfei bid smoothly to the heart game, against which Dong led his singleton king. Shen won the ace and cashed three top clubs for a spade discard. Next she played a heart to the king followed by a diamond to the ten, ruffed. Shen ruffed the club return in dummy and played a third diamond to the queen and again ruffed. She ruffed the spade return and had the rest; 11 tricks for +650.

At the other table, Li opened with a two-suited weak bid and Weimin raised to game over the double. Jin doubled 4[ and Bi left it in. Bi led a heart to his partner's ace and the jack of hearts continuation went to the queen and king. Now Bi switched to ace and another diamond, ruffed by Li, who ruffed his last heart in dummy, ruffed the jack of diamonds, and exited with a low club. Bi went up with the ace and exited with his remaining club so Jin won two club tricks then got out with a heart and had a trump trick to come at the end; down four for –800 and CRE8IVE were on the board with 4 IMPs.

Board 10 was passed out in one room while in the other Dong/Liu bid freely to 3} and managed to bring it home with the help of a friendly defence; +110 and 3 IMPs to CRE8IVE, who still trailed by 7-27.

Either you are playing five-card majors or you are not. Jin opened the West hand with 1] and got what he deserved when Bi assumed there was a 5-3 fit so bid to the heart game. Li led the nine of clubs to the jack and queen and Weimin switched to the nine of spades for the king and ace. Li switched back to clubs so Jin was forced to ruff. He led a diamond to the ace and a diamond back to the jack and when that lost to the queen was doomed. The play record ends there but he is credited with eight tricks for down two and –100, presumably losing a long heart and a club.

Shen showed how you are supposed to deal with this type of hand if a 2NT rebid is not an option for whatever reason, opening 1{ then rebidding the suit over the 2} response. Wenfei bid 2NT and Shen raised to game. Liu led the six of hearts, Wenfei winning the king and leading a spade to the jack then back to the queen, ducked by Dong. Now Wenfei judged correctly not to play a third spade, which would have given Dong two tricks in the suit. I would have thought that it was time to play on diamonds while there were still communications between the two hand sin hearts, but Wenfei cashed out the hearts with the aid of the finesse of the ten, then led a club to the jack and queen and back came the nine of diamonds. She covered with the ten and, when Dong ducked, thought for some time before allowing the ten to win the trick. The play record ends here with Wenfei credited with only eight tricks so down one for –50 but 2 IMPs to Vincent Li. I suppose that she unblocked the ace of diamonds then led a spade and Dong took two of those then led a club through

Both Wests opened 1] and both Easts responded with what looks like a bid to show a game-forcing balanced hand. Shen simply jumped to 4], which looks reasonable enough, while Jin showed the clubs then let partner play in 3NT.

Dong led a spade against 4], Shen playing low from dummy so Liu won the king. He switched to his club. Shen won in dummy and played ace then jack of spades for a diamond discard. Dong ruffed and gave his partner a club ruff. Back came a spade and Shen ruffed with the eight to prevent a cheap ruff. Dong over-ruffed and gave Liu another club ruff so the contract was down three for –150.

Weimin led a spade against 3NT, Bi winning dummy's queen and playing the queen of hearts. It might be best to duck this trick, as it appears that declarer can then be held to only one heart trick, but Li won the heart and returned a club. Bi won the ace of clubs and played a second heart. Though Li ducked this time, it was too late and the suit was quickly established. Li won the third heart and led a diamond, Weimin winning the ace and returning a low diamond. But Bi had the {J and he also had the rest of the tricks for +430 and 11 IMPs to CRE8IVE.

Is the South hand a two-level overcall in your book? The main suit is weak and the overall hand nothing special, but an overcall does make it more difficult for the opposition to find a potential spade fit, and maybe it is necessary for N/S's constructive purposes, as on this deal?

Liu passed the South hand, which is hardly a terrible error, and Shen's pre-emptive heart raise cut the CRE8IVE pair out of the auction. A spade ruff meant that 3] was down two for –100.Weimin did overcall and that allowed Li to raise all the way to game. With the ]A onside the ]K provided a discard for the diamond loser and Weimin had 11 straightforward tricks for +400 and 7 IMPs to Vincent Li.

On Board 15 both Easts declared 4]. Liu made an attacking lead and that gave the tenth trick, while Weimin led passively and left declarer to guess his way to a tenth trick, a guess which he got wrong. That was 10 more IMPs to Vincent Li, who ended the first set with a healthy lead of 48-19 IMPs. There were two sets still to play.

Vincent Li v CRE8IVE (Open F 2)

Vincent L i had bui l t up a useful but hardly overwhelming lead of 48-19 in the first session. They would be looking to consolidate their lead as session two got underway. On the first deal Jin/Bi for CRE8IVE stopped in a safe partscore while Shen/Wenfei bid an optimistic 4] which had to fail by a trick. Plus 140 and +50 meant 5 IMPs to CRE8IVE. They gained 3 more IMPs on Board 18 for an extra undertrick in 3NT, but then gave away 5 IMPs on Board 19 when Jin doubled a 1} opening with a 3-3-3-4 16-count then rebid 1NTover his partner's 1] response. Bi, looking at fivehearts and 6 HCP, drove to a hopeless game. Why Jindidn't just overcall 1NT in the first place is beyondme.

Zhanjie Jin also opened a strong club but Shuguang Bi made a simple 1] positive response then bid his suit twice more, encouraging Jin to cuebid in its support. Though Bi now signed off, Jin went on with Key-card and bid the small slam. Vincent Li led the two of diamonds, ensuring the defeat of the slam. Bi won the ace and played the king of spades, Li winning the ace and playing queen and another diamond. Bi ruffed with the ten, cashed the queen of hearts and attempted to cash the [Q. The queen of spades could not be picked up so the grand slam was down one trick for –50.

Weimin Wang opened 2NT and Li transferred then cuebid and, after Weimin had signed off in 4[, took control with Key-card and bid the small slam. There was just the ace of spades to come for the defence, so Shen had an overtrick for +430.

Li opened 1} in the other room and Weimin responded 1{. When Bi doubled and Jin responded 2} it appears that there was some kind of amisunderstanding because 2} ended the auctionand made nine tricks for +110 but 8 IMPs to VincentLi. This is a tricky slam to get to. Wenfei/Shen stopped in game after each had bid and rebid their long suits after the strong club opening. Wenfei won the trump lead and drew trumps then played ace of diamonds, a diamond to the king and ruffed a diamond. A club to the king and a second diamond ruff established two extra tricks there, bringing the total to 13 for +510.

Jin also began with a strong club then showed his spades over the diamond positive response. Bi, however, rebid 2NT rather than stress the moderate six-card diamond suit. When Jin now rebid his spades, that allowed Bi to bid 4} as a clear cuebid for spades, and after Jin had showna diamond control, presumably the ace, Bi's hand hadimproved sufficiently for him to ask for key cards then bidthe small slam. Again the lead was a trump but Jin followeda different line. He won the jack, cashed the }K and led adiamond to the ace then ruffed his low club. Next camethe king of diamonds and Jin was very lucky that Li hada singleton trump along with his singleton diamond. Heruffed a diamond back to hand, drew trumps and hadonly to concede a heart at the end; +980 and 10 IMPs toCRE8IVE. That was a poor and fortunate line. PresumablyJin simply never saw the line played at the other table.

Neither Wenfei not Jin was willing to bid at their first turn facing a non-strong club opening but, when partner could show a good and shapely hand by bidding 2[, both were happy to invite game. Bi accepted the invitation, while Shen did not.Li led the four of hearts against game. We have no details of the play but the contract was just made for +620.

Dong led the king of hearts against 3[. Shen won the ace, pitching her club loser from hand, and played ace then ruffed a diamond, and ran the jack of spades to Dong's queen. Back came a heart so Shen ruffed, ruffed a diamond and played another spade to the ace. Dong played the jack of hearts but Shen discarded on that and dummy's ]9 was standing ready to take care of any further heart leads, so Dong switched to a club. Shen won, cashed the king of spades and cashed the diamonds; 10 tricks for +170 but 10 IMPs to CRE8IVE.

Dong opened 1NT and was raised directly to game. Wenfei led a club to dummy's eight and Dong played on hearts, coming to an overtrick for +430.

In the other room, Li opened 1] and Weimin responded with a forcing 1NT. When Li rebid 2}, systemically only promising three cards, Jin doubled to show clubs and Weimin redoubled, to play. That would probably have made with an overtrick, so Bi was certainly right to run to 2[. However, when that was doubled it is far from clear that Jin was right to run to 3}. Bi could not have enjoyed going back to spades, where he had been doubled a level lower, but it surely had to be better than clubs, he thought – correctly, for what it's worth. Li led a diamond against 3[ doubled so Weimin cashed three of those then switched to the king of hearts, ducked, and the ten of hearts to declarer's ace. Bi ruffed a heart with dummy's king, ruffed a club low and played a trump. He was down four for –1100 and 12 IMPs to Vincent

Shen opened a strong club in third seat and Dong went for the big pre-empt of 5{. Wenfei doubled to show her values, and Shen left it in, having no reason to believe that she could make anything at this level. The king of clubs provided an entry to take the trump finesse, so Dong had eight diamond tricks and one club; down two for –500.

Bi too opened with a strong club, but Li overcalled only 3{. Jin doubled to show values and raised Bi's heart response to game. Li led the ten of spades. Bi won the ace and laid down the ace of hearts, getting the bad news. He continued with three more rounds of spades, the last being ruffed with the seven and over-ruffed with the nine. The jack of clubs to the queen and ace was followed by the jack of hearts to the queen and king. Bi continued with the four of clubs to the nine and king and now a diamond through collected two of those for the defence and there was still the ten of hearts to come. the contract was down one for –100 and another 12 IMPs to Vincent Li.

Dong's 1NT response to the strong club showed a balanced positive. Wenfei made a pre-emptive jump overcall and was doubled. Liu led the ace of hearts then switched to king and a low club. Wenfei ruffed, played king of spades and a spade to the ace, and continued by leading a diamond to the king. That meant down only one for –100.

Weimin's 1NT opening was raised to game, shutting out the spade suit. Could Bi find the brilliant lead of ace and another spade? No, he led a heart, and Weimin took his nine tricks for +400 and 7 IMPs to Vincent Li.

After 32 boards Vincent Li led by 116-42. There was to be a third session but, down by over 70 and not in the sort of form that might turn that around, CRE8IVE conceded. The 2018 Hong Kong Inter-City champions are therefore team Vincent Li.
