Dear Clients,

Cambodia’s population is around 16 million with approximately 65% of these are under the age of 30. While the country has comparatively low income per capita to its neighbouring countries, Cambodia has achieved consistent economic growth for the last several years of around 7% since the country switched to the market-driven economy. The IMF predicts 7.1% growth for 2017 with a positive outlook after commencement of the new regional trading system of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2016.

As Cambodia adjusts to regional and internal growth, it needs better education systems and a skilled workforce. The eagerness for knowledge and the exceptionally high value placed on education by the youth demographic and their parents, combined with a rapid growth of the middle-class, presents exciting opportunities for the education industry. This can be seen in the mushrooming of private education providers and the positive trend in studying abroad. Students aim to study in top countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, US and UK as favourite destinations, from high school to higher education levels. Scholarships also provide key positive momentum in attracting students to the destinations.

With its global reputation for quality assurance, safe and peaceful cities, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, US and UK attract thousands of international students, including Cambodians, who look to gain a world-class education and an internationally-recognised qualification from its high-quality tertiary education system at prestigious colleges and universities.

As the largest study abroad services provider in Cambodia with its English language school (ACE) since 1992 of over 16,000 students and the only Official Test Centre for IELTS Regular Tests and IELTS for UKVI in Cambodia, IDP has a positive outlook on study abroad prospects in the market, especially for the Australia, Canada, New Zealand, US and UK destinations, confirmed by the increasing number of study applications in each country.

The Global Education & Career Expo is organised annually by IDP Education (Cambodia) as one part of the Global Alumni Convention (GAC). The GAC will be held for two full days to incorporate a series of events include the Global Education & Business Forum, the Global Education & Career Expo and the Global Alumni Reunion to bring together graduates from all around the world to meet, share ideas and network with experts, decision makers and leaders from governments, the private sector, and civil society for education, trade and investment opportunities. CURRENCYThe local currency is Khmer Riel (KHR), but US Dollars (USD) are also widely accepted. Credit cards are becoming more widely accepted, but outside the main city centres you may find cash the only acceptable currency. ATMs are widely available throughout the cities and only US Dollars (USD) or Khmer Riel (KHR) can be withdrawn from the ATMs.

From years to years, the demand for the education in these five countries above has dramactically increased among Cambodian students due to a combination of relatives in the study destinations, immigration opportunities, good quality education and affordability through part-time job.

More and more parents in Cambodia now arranged an early educational plan for their children. IDP Education (Cambodia) has developed the following student own preferences that are able to provide a generic picture of what the students in Cambodia are interested in pursuing; therefore, this will help the representatives to analyse and figure out of how to promote the right areas in our market:

■Many of students will require English or foundation courses before undergraduate levels and some of the students experience the difficulties of getting into the postgraduate levels as they are from different section universities. ■ Some students will enquire about scholarship opportunities but some partial scholarship can help boost the potential market.

■ Students are not likely to submit an application during the event; they will require further counselling and also need to commence the visa application process via experienced counsellors. ■ Courses most in demand by Cambodian students are Business, IT, Engineering, Design, Hospitality, Architecture and Health Science. ■ Key decision making factors are relatives, location of institution, and quality of institution, institution fee and reputation of the institution. ■ Parents play a key role in the decision making process.
