The Graduate Programme

Our four year programme whereby the graduate will be placed in a team – working on a significant project – where they can learn all aspects of the design process.

The graduate will learn why buildings are developed, to understand client drivers, and how we can use these drivers to interface with the other members of the design team.

If appropriate, the graduate will be given the opportunity to work with other teams across the disciplines to broaden their experience and become more rounded in their career path.

The aim for graduates with suitable degrees is to become chartered within five years

Our scheme will focus on gaining competences for Charterships, but also to developing rounded and confident engineers

Graduates will join engineering team where they become an integral part of the business

If appropriate, the company will allow graduates to gain experience on-site by arranging working with an M&E contractor, commissioning company or within a client environment

Courses relevant to their work may be offered to graduates to enhance their experience

In order to structure their training all graduates will be monitored every quarter to ensure that they gain the necessary competencies to work towards Chartership and Professional registration

Graduates will be reviewed bi-annually by their line managers in the form of a Personal Development Plan to record and review performance and discuss salary reviews

It is anticipated that graduates performing the required standard will be promoted to Intermediate Engineer within two to four years and Senior Engineer within four years

Extra-curricular activites

Mentors and ‘buddies’As part of the graduate development programme, each graduate will be provided with a mentor to help guide them towards their goals, objectives, aspirations and career progression. The mentoring relationship will be with an experienced staff member who will offer on-going support throughout their career development at Hurley Palmer Flatt.

The mentor will: Build confidence

Help integrate the graduate into the team

 Give impartial ideas and advice

Provide feedback and give support surrounding the working life of an engineer

Give a better understanding of the company

 Impart their knowledge and expertise

Help and recognise the abilities of the mentee to develop their skills

 Treat the relationship as confidential

Assist the mentee to problem solve and produce solutions

Successful mentoring will require both parties to actively participate in the relationship. All graduates will be encouraged to seek feedback, be willing to observe as well as demonstrate enthusiasm.

The mentor will also support the graduate to set goals and reflect on their learning so far, and encourage them to make suggestions throughout the programme. As part of the integration into the company we would recommend that each graduate arranges to meet with their mentor as often as is needed.

We value our graduates at Hurley Palmer Flatt, and as part of getting to know the company we would encourage graduates to ‘buddy up’ with a young engineer who previously joined Hurley Palmer Flatt as a graduate. A buddy will be someone to go to for advice, have lunch with and be the first ‘port of call’ in the graduates day-to-day working life.

Young Engineers Forum Committee (YEFC)

Hurley Palmer Flatt are committed to improving the knowledge and skills of their staff and engineers in order to maximise the value added to their projects and the industry. As part of this, the graduates and young engineers who work with the company have access to a forum for them learn new skills and share knowledge with their peers.

This forum is the Young Engineers Forum Committee Forum (YEFC) which Hurley Palmer Flatt will provide resource, experience and guidance from senior engineers and management in order to pass on the knowledge gained as a company to the ‘next generation’ of engineers.

YECF OBJECTIVESThe objectives of the YEFC are be as follows:1. Hold regular meetings in order to provide knowledge sharing between young

engineers of different disciplines and senior engineers to broaden the horizons of the young engineers. Knowledge sharing can be in the form of:

a. Site visits to supplier’s factories, construction projects or occupied buildings to understand the different services and skills that are required during each stage of construction

b. Presentations by young or senior engineers about a specific project, a technical aspect of a project or a lessons learned scenario which will demonstrate good practice, compliance with regulations and standards or common pitfalls

2. Use the meetings described in objective 1 to provide practise for young engineers in attending professional meetings and presentations in order to improve their skills in the following areas:

a. Chairing meetings

b. Taking and producing official minutes

c. Creating action lists and ensuring that assigned actions are completed

d. Providing and following a proposed agenda

e. Listening to presentations on technical subjects

f. Preparing and presenting on a particular subject

3. Sharing, via open forum as part of the meetings, engineers’ experiences to enable improvement of their professional abilities in accordance with the Engineering Council and the engineer’s chosen professional body (e.g. CISBE, IET; IMechE, etc.) in order to achieve Chartered Engineer (CEng) status. In order to facilitate this, a list of the engineers in the company shall be created with each engineer’s name, job title, professional body and level within their professional body to provide potential mentors for young engineers.

4. Create social links between engineers of a similar age in order to foster intra- office relationships. As the young engineers rise through the company these relationships will be important in managing the business.

Hurley Palmer Flatt look back at last year’s GATES programme and find out how last years’ graduates have got on.

Arun Patel, David Tranter, and Ben Cowperthwaite have all experienced Hurley Palmer Flatt as graduates and we are proud of how far they have come over the past year. We caught up with our graduates and found out how their experience within the scheme has helped shape their time in the company. What has been the highlight of your time over the past last year?

Ben Cowperthwaite “My highlight has been obtaining the prestigious graduate of the year award, and reminding my team at every possibility.” Arun Patel “Working within a team of experienced engineers at all levels, gaining a further understanding of the industry and how it has evolved over time.” David Tranter “My highlight has been joining a team of very knowledgeable, friendly and experienced engineers.”

Any exciting projects to note?

Ben Cowperthwaite “One of the exciting projects I have worked on is the edgy office fit-out in Shoreditch. As a trendy electrical engineer, I was required to explain the phenomenon to my decidedly un-cool colleagues.”

Arun Patel “Reckitt Benckiser Project Wren Laboratory: working through the project from concept design to its current status at Stage D.”

David Tranter “Two projects for the National Gallery have been particularly interesting as well as a small involvement in the new UBS headquarters in Broadgate.”

What do you enjoy most about being a part of the graduate scheme?

Ben Cowperthwaite “I fully enjoy attending all of the YEC meetings”.

Arun Patel “I like the fact that all progress through each quarter is monitored and reviewed to ensure that the graduate is exposed to all aspects of the role, ensuring the learning curve is always steep and on-going.”

David Tranter “As well as being very capable and experienced, my team also has a very supportive atmosphere. People are willing to take time out to explain complicated systems or concepts. The regular meetings to discuss progress are also very important.”

How would you describe your journey over the past year and do you have any advice for our new graduates starting this year?

Ben Cowperthwaite “I have learned a lot by entering a new field. This grad scheme teaches you everything a degree does not. New grads should challenge people to explain acronyms, because half of the time the engineers using them have forgotten what they stand for.”

Arun Patel “Do not be afraid to ask colleagues for help, as everyone has a vast amount of experience and knowledge.”

David Tranter “A lot has happened in a year and I feel like I have learned an incredible amount. There is still a lot more to learn. Don’t be dissuaded if you feel overwhelmed by it all.”

Ben Cowperthwaite

My experiences with Hurley Palmer Flatt

We are proud to have helped our graduates through this journey and we look forward to working with our graduate intake of 2016!
