Is he guilty for not having influenced his neighbor positively, or not protesting his actions? Or do we suspect that as a neighbor he himself was influenced, and similarly participated in the wrongdoing (see Rashi to Bamidbar 16:1)? In studying this issue it is especially worthwhile to examine the final passage of Tractate Succah, where the Talmud speaks about how the entire priestly family of Bilgah lost certain privileges in the Temple as “neighbors” of a few “evil” family members. Indeed there are even opinions that forbid responding to Kaddish or Kedusah during Bentsching, precisely as is the case with the Amidah (see Piskei Tshuvos 183:16). The reason for this is that the Halacha (OC 183:9) clearly requires a great degree of consistent attention during Bentsching, and forbids us from simultaneously walking around or engaging in other activities. The only circumstance when it would be permitted to Bentsch on the move is if the person ate his meal while travelling, and stopping his travels to Bentsch would be more distracting than helpful (OC 183:11). Along the same lines, the Mishneh Berurah (183:11) cites the opinion of the Bach and what he observed as common custom that require the donning of a hat and a jacket for Bentsching. It is noteworthy as well that towards the conclusion of Bentsching we say the phrase “Os-eh Shalom B’Mromov”, a phrase that is typically used to close the Amidah. All of these elements and opinions create a general sense of the seriousness and focus with which one should approach the Torah com- mandment of Birchas HaMazon. PARSHA QUESTION OF THE WEEK BAD NEIGHBORS

The Halacha’s prescription for the leprous house (Niggei Batim) is that the affected portion of the

wall is demolished, even if it is a shared wall between neighbors. This law led our Sages (Sifrei to 14:40) to

comment: “Woe upon the evil (Rasha), woe upon his neighbor.” What is the basis for imposing shared re-

sponsibility upon a neighbor? Is he guilty for not having influenced his neighbor positively, or not protesting

his actions? Or do we suspect that as a neighbor he himself was influenced, and similarly participated in the

wrongdoing (see Rashi to Bamidbar 16:1)?

In studying this issue it is especially worthwhile to examine the final passage of Tractate Succah,

where the Talmud speaks about how the entire priestly family of Bilgah lost certain privileges in the Temple as

“neighbors” of a few “evil” family members. The privileges were assumed by the priestly family of Yeshevav,

which followed Bilgah in the rotation. The Talmud notes the irony that here Yeshevav, the neighbors of the

evil, actually profited! Why?

HALACHA OF THE WEEK: A FEATURE OF THE BJSZ DAILY HALACHA SHIUR

BENTSCHING POSTURE

The Shulchan Aruch (183:8) cites an opinion that one must treat Bentsching with the same reverence

and respect as the Amidah, with regard to not interrupting the Bentsching by exchanging greetings or the like

with anyone else. Indeed there are even opinions that forbid responding to Kaddish or Kedusah during

Bentsching, precisely as is the case with the Amidah (see Piskei Tshuvos 183:16). The reason for this is that the

Halacha (OC 183:9) clearly requires a great degree of consistent attention during Bentsching, and forbids us

from simultaneously walking around or engaging in other activities. The only circumstance when it would be

permitted to Bentsch on the move is if the person ate his meal while travelling, and stopping his travels to

Bentsch would be more distracting than helpful (OC 183:11). Along the same lines, the Mishneh Berurah

(183:11) cites the opinion of the Bach and what he observed as common custom that require the donning of

a hat and a jacket for Bentsching. It is noteworthy as well that towards the conclusion of Bentsching we say the

phrase “Os-eh Shalom B’Mromov”, a phrase that is typically used to close the Amidah. All of these elements and

opinions create a general sense of the seriousness and focus with which one should approach the Torah com-

mandment of Birchas HaMazon.
