Dear Reader!
Welcome to Ghana Fresh Produce!
The economic challenges that Ghana is currently experiencing has heighten the need to promote exports more vigorously, especially the non-traditional exports. The Fresh Produce industry continues to hold a lot of potential and prospects for increased export income generation because of the following:
Ghana has crafted and launched a National Export Strategy to focus decision making and resource allocation for development and promotion of exports. Fresh Produce has been selected as one of the priority products to be promoted and supported. A Yam Sector Strategy is also in place to focus resource allocation by all alliance partners to move yam exports to greater heights.
Today, the fresh produce industry is served by the well-managed Tema Seaport Fresh Produce Terminal with 4,400 m² of floor space and plug in stations for refrigerated containers. The state-of-the-art Perishable Centre at the Airport is in operation and a new Cargo Centre is being built in a public-private partnership. All major farms now operate own pack houses with cooling facilities. Refrigerated trucks are used to transport fresh fruits and vegetables from pack houses to the Fresh Produce Terminals at the sea port and airport to provide unbroken cold chains.
Two Ghana-registered internationally recognised certification bodies are now active in Ghana: Control Union and Smart-Cert (in partnership with CERES Germany) thereby reducing the costs of GlobalGAP, organic, and Utz certification. A
Pesticide Residue Analysis Laboratory with ISO 17025 accreditation is operational at the Ghana Standards Authority to test on maximum residue levels compliance in fresh produce.
As a host of the National Technical Working Group for GlobalGAP, FAGE has started to fund training of producer groups in preparation of GlobalGAP certification. This service is provided by specialised Global GAP Farm Assurers. The majority of buyers from Europe, the US and the Middle East require Global GAP certification from producers.
Operations are also underway to get more organic producers certified according to EU and NOP standards. This process is supported by the Bio Ghana Network – one of the FAGE member associations.
Finally, a platform has been created that enables effective dialogue between stakeholders in the agriculture sector under the Agriculture Public Private Dialogue Forum (APPDF). FAGE's active participation in this platform gives industry players an opportunity for addressing their issues and to contribute to policy dialogue.
I wish to thank all those who contributed to these developments, especially the leaders of the FAGE member associations for their time and efforts spent to advance the Fresh Produce sector in Ghana as well as the German cooperation as well as other development partners for their support.
Yours

Becoming a World Class Export Business Solution Provider
Background of the BusinessThe Federation of Associations of Ghanaian Exporters (FAGE) is an umbrella organization of exporter, and product associations, established in 1992. With over 2,500 companies represented, FAGE embodies Ghanaian businesses in the agricultural and manufacturing industries, including exporters of food crops, seafood, agricultural products, forest products, handicrafts and textiles. FAGE promotes the expansion and diversification of Ghanaian exports to foreign markets by assisting member firms in developing and marketing their products, and by improving the enabling environment for trade through government advocacy.
Member services comprise secretarial functions for its member associations, IT support as well as trade fair services. FAGE has been organizing the Ghana stand at FruitLogistica since 2006.
The organization also advocates for trade expansion, participating in policymaking forums and making recommendations to government agencies and foreign entities based on its knowledge of local and international markets. These linkages between government, Ghanaian business, and their global partners facilitate doing business in Ghana and enhance the performance of non-traditional exports.

Eastern Region Pineapple Associations
Cooperative Pineapple Growers Societies in the Eastern Region
Since the early 1990s, smallholder pineapple producers in the Eastern Region have formed associations which assist their members to adopt better practices and access high-end markets. A number of pineapple grower associations in the Eastern Region have adopted GlobalGAP certification to be able to supply to high-end processers in Ghana such as Blue Skies, HPW and Pinora. The association members which are smallholders growing pineapples on 0.5 to 3 acres also supply fresh pineapples for export through links to larger commercial SPEG member farms. Some have the capacity to export directly using the pack house services of nearby larger farms.

Currently, we have 30 members who manage a total of 1,254 acres of fruiting mango farms. Our services also benefit over 350 associate members. In 2014 alone, not less than 2,900 t of fresh mango was sold to export, processing and domestic fresh fruits market. We are targeting to mobilise 6,000 t by the end of 2016.

Ghana Root Crops and Tubers Exporters Union
GROCTEU was registered in 2001 as the apex body for four yam exporters namely the Ghana Yam Producers & Exporters Association, the Ghana Assorted Foodstuffs Exporters Association, the Konkomba Yam Farmers & Exporters of Ghana and the Sea Freight Yam Exporters of Ghana. In 2004 The Ministry of Trade & Industry appointed GROCTEU to set up and manage in the Port City of Tema a National Yam Pack House, which is the single corridor for the inspection of all yam sea shipments by the regulatory agencies and customs. GROCTEU has established direct links with twelve producer groups in twenty major yam growing districts for the farmers to produce to quality standards and buyer requirements. Product-lines are yam (4 varieties), sweet potato and cocoyam. GROCTEU member companies which are small to medium size have the capacity individually to meet yam order volumes from 5 to 500 tons per month. Besides this, GROCTEU has registered a company, GROCTEU Marketing Ltd., which members use to execute larger orders.
