President’s Message
Submitted by Shirley Wozimirsky
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven.
*Jesus Himself was no stranger to persecution.
*In all the hard places of life that God brings us to, He is creating opportunities for
us to exercise such faith in Him as will bring about blessed results and greatly
glorify His name.
*We need people. We need Christian fellowship. We need the Church. We cannot
go it alone.

Western Eparchy Assembly at Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of
St. John the Baptist, Edmonton, Alberta, October 28 & 29, 2016 Report submitted by Shirley Wozimirsky
Attendance at the Assembly – 82 people (21 clergy, 51 laity(delegates) 10 guests
representing 24 parishes in Alberta and British Columbia
Fee to Western Eparchy will remain at $15.00 per parish member for 2017.
Message from the Consistory:
“We are all in this together.” No finger pointing or blaming any person for the sad
state of our consistory.
Staffing at the Consistory is reduced – editor of Visnyk resigned in June and the
accountant has been released.
How did we get to this point?
Changing demographics – ageing, declining memberships, fewer parishes
Membership fees are not keeping up with actual costs
Sobor deficits 2010 - $106,596.00 2015 - $99,120.00
Extra ordinary legal costs – 3 lawsuits
Increasing accounts receivables of UOCC Consistory became note holders –
Poor track record of items sold from the bookstore, levies not paid etc.
Currently the Consistory is carrying $405,000.00 of debt.
Current Financial Indicators:
Cash reserves are down
Accounts receivable – far too high
Cash flow – very tight
Lines of credit – heavily used
Donations – declining
Parish needs and expectations are increasing
Currently the Consistory owns 5 undeveloped lots of land and 3 pieces of real
estate.
Challenges and Opportunities:
Closure or sale of 37 inactive parishes
Membership levies – time to re-define term
Special fundraising appeal to eliminate debt; propose 5 year campaign
involving the UOCC Foundation
Surplus Consistory land assets – develop or sell
A resolution was passed at the Western Eparchy Assembly in regards to special
fundraising in the parish to assist the UOCC in debt reduction. The resolution is
as follows:
Resolution of Action
2.1 WHEREAS the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada is currently, and has
been for the previous five years, in a predicament of financial shortfall,
WHEREAS we, members of the UOCC, are responsible for the good
stewardship of the Church
BE IT RESOLVED, that parishes include in their programming in 2016 and 2017
a specific fundraising initiative to help eliminate debt at the national level of
our Church.
FUNDRAISING TARGET: $135,000.00
The levy to the Consistory for 2017 will be $100.00 per parish member. This
levy will be increasing by $5.00 per year for the next 5 years.
St. Andrew’s College:
There are currently 13 students; 9 full time and 4 part time. 1 student is from
Radway and 8 are from Ukraine. One student is a female studying Theology.
Fr. Timothy Chrapko spoke on “Towards an Orthodox Christian
Understanding of Death”
The societal perceptions of death are 1. death is certain
2. death is permanent
3. death must be feared
4. death is unclean
There are the two extremes – avoidance or denial and obsession
The avoidance or denial manifests in the practice of cremation, cremation with
no service, 30 – 40% opt for no funeral, a good portion of cremated remains
are not picked up and some have gems created from cremated ashes.
Obsession of death is common today through vampires, zombies, violent video
games. The trivial objective of this obsession is curiosity for amusement and
entertainment.
In our Orthodox Faith death is clearly understood. Christ destroyed death by
His death. Understanding death is integral to the way we live and it depends
upon our understanding.
Visnyk – There will be fewer issues of the Visnyk published.
Church Goods Store – will wind down operations by January, 2018
Jesus
If you never felt pain, then how would you know that I am a Healer?
If you never had to pray, how would you know that I am a Deliverer?
If you never felt sadness, how would you know that I am a Comforter?
If you never made a mistake, how would you know that I am a Forgiver?
If you never were in trouble, how would you know that I will come to your
Rescue?
If you never had a problem, how would you know that I can solve them?
If you never had any suffering, then how would you know what I went
through?
If I gave you all things, how would you appreciate them?
If you knew all, how would you know that I will answer your questions?
If I never corrected you, how would you know that I love you?
If you had all the power, then how would you learn to depend on me?
If your life was perfect, then what would you need me for?
Love Jesus

December 2016 St. Michael’s Khram St. Michael’s Annual Khram was held on Sunday, November 20, 2016. The Hierarchical Divine Liturgy was officiated by His Grace Bishop Ilarion, assisted by Rt. Rev. Protopresbyter Fr. Victor Lakusta and Rt. Rev. Protopresbyter Fr. Nicholas Rauliuk. All the guests proceeded to the parish hall for a wonderful turkey dinner complete with all the trimmings. Many thanks to Jim Kniatzky and his team for cooking a delicious meal. We were pleased to have Lesia Perritt, the UWAC National President present the pins and to Betty Corlett, the 1st Vice President of the UWAC Provincial Executive for presenting flowers to our members. On behalf of the Kniahynia Ol’ha Women’s Association I congratulate Father Nicholas and Dobr. Jeannette on their 50th wedding anniversary. Christmas Bazaar The Christmas season is approaching quickly. It is the time of year when extra chores need to be done — shopping, cooking, baking and decorating our homes in a Christmas theme. In addition to that, St. Michael’s ladies have worked hard to fill
our freezers with goodies for our annual Christmas Bazaar, December 3, 2016. A roster work schedule has been made for that event and posted in the hall kitchen. We are grateful to all members and non members who have offered to help. Annual General Meeting The Women’s Annual General meeting (dinner meeting) has been scheduled for Sunday, December 11 at 5:00 p.m. We encourage members and potential members to attend. Fellowship Coffee Beginning in December, fellowship coffee will be served only once a month. This is necessary due to declining membership and ageing members who can no longer assist in preparing the luncheon. For December, the fellowship lunch has been scheduled for the 18th. On this day, our parish will celebrate St. Nicholas Day. For 2017, a schedule will be made for the monthly fellowship lunches. Dates to Remember Bazaar, Saturday .................................
