• Could your project be linked to environmental topics?
• Could your project target: energy efficiency, CO2
reduction, resources efficiency, sustainable
development?
• Is your project replicable in Europe?
• Is your project a technique or method that has not
been applied or tested before, or elsewhere and
offers potential environmental or climate advantages
compared to current best practice?
• Are you putting in practice, test, evaluate
approaches that are new or unknown in the
specific context of the project, such as the
geographical, ecological, socio-economic context, and
that could be applied elsewhere in similar
circumstances?

Toxic chemicals represent about 62% of total chemical production in the EU.. Although there is no conclusive data on their toxicity for
human Several specific phosphorus derivatives are used in a wide range of applications, including pesticides, flame retardants, plastics,
childcare products and pharmaceuticalshealth and the environment, their production can involve chemical intermediaries (such as
specific ammines) that need to be treated and recovered, or phenol derivatives, which are all categorised as highly toxic.
The project will demonstrate a more sustainable and efficient process for the production of such compounds. The new process will
avoid the use of toxic chemicals and will not produce contaminated wastewater because water use is largely avoided. The new
process also uses less energy and generates by-products that are useful for other sectors such as agriculture.
Expected results
• Set up an innovative, highly sustainable and efficient continuous process;
• Avoid the production of hazardous intermediaries and by-products and the use of toxic chemicals for wastewater treatment;
• Reduce energy consumption in the process by 20-30% as a result of the simplification of the industrial process, the 100% recovery of
solvents and elimination of wastewater treatment;
• Reduce water consumption by up to 100% and wastewater production by up to 100%, compared with the current production process;
and
• Increase awareness about alternative sustainable and eco-friendly chemical processes in the chemical industry.

The main differences between H2020 & LIFE
42
H2020 LIFE
Mainly research but with some development Only demonstration, piloting, prototyping (NO RESEARCH)
Average amount of budget per project between 5-6 million
Max budget amount per project 2.5 million
70% or 100% cash grants (depending on the opportunity)
60% cash grants of the eligible costs
Different macro-topics and specific calls for proposal
Topics linked to sustainability, environment,
resource efficiency, energy savings etc. Open topics, no specific call for proposal
Obligation of consortium: at least 3 legal entitities in 3 different EU countries
No obligation of consortium – single entity only can participate
European wide competition Mainly national competition (depending on the topic)
Deadlines of submission: October 2016, January 2017 (depending on the topic)
Deadline of submission – September 2016
