ExplorationsintheFunctionsofLanguage(1973)と ロジ ャ ー ・フ ァ ウ ラー

(RogerFowler)教 授 のLinguisticsandtheNovel(1977)は,英 文 学 へ め 言

語 学 的 ア プ ロー チ とい う新 生 面 を 開 い た 画期 的 な研 究 であ った 。 続 い て1980年

代 か ら1990年 に か け て 出版 され たG.LeechandMichaelH.Short(1981),

StyleinFictionALinguisticIntroductiontoEnglishとM.Halliday

(1985,2nded.1994),AnlntroductiontoFunctionalGrammarと

RonaldCarterandWalterNash(1990),SeeingthroughLanguage:A

GuidetoStylesofEnglishWriting等 に よ り,我 わ れ に,対 象 を文 学 に限

らず 様 ざ ま の分 野 の英 語 のテ クス ト分 析 の為 の,優 れ た手 本 と文 法 が 提 供 され

て きた 。

この よ うな手 本 や 文 法 を 手 が か りと して,ラ フ カデ ィオ ・ハ ー ソ(Lafcadio

Hearn,1850-1904)の 作 品 の中 で,日 本 の伝 説 文 学 の 英 訳 や 紹 介,英 米 文 学

に 就 い て の 著 書 ・論 文 な どで は な く,純 粋 に ハ ー ン自身 の 発 想 で 書 か れ た 随筆

の中 か ら,日 本 に到 達 した 当初 の 印 象 を描 いた 随 筆 『日本暼 見記 』(Glimpses

ofUnfamiliarJapan)の 第 一章 「極 東 の第 一 日」("MyFirstDayinthe

Orient")の 最 初 の3分 の1余 りを テ クス トに選 び,そ の文 体 分 析 を試 み た い。

1.語 彙 的 特 徴(LEXICALFEATURES)

1.1古 体 ・雅 文 ・詩 に 用 い ら れ る 言 葉,型 苦 し い 言 葉(ARCHAIC,

こ の テ ク ス トの 語 彙 上 の 特 徴 と し て,ま ず 目 に つ く こ と は,全 体 と し て 平 易

な 口語 的 文 脈 の 中 に,堅 苦 し い 言 葉 や 古 体 や 雅 文 に 用 い ら れ る文 語 的 な 言 葉 が

用 さ れ て い る 。 こ れ は 非 常 に 微 妙 な 印 象 を 何 とか 正 確 に 表 現 し よ う とす る ハ ー

ン の 努 力 の 跡 で あ る と 思 わ れ る 。 そ の 例 と頻 度 を 挙 げ る。

1.5絶 対 最 上 級(ABSOLUTESUPERLATIVE)の 形 容 詞

こ の テ ク ス トの 中 で,絶 対 最 上 級(AbsoluteSuperlative)の 形 容 詞 が3箇 所

で 使 わ れ て い る。 下 の ⑫ のsoftest〔=verysoft〕 と2の(4)のgentlest〔=very

gentle〕 と2の ⑫ のmostlovable〔 ・verylovable〕 で あ る 。 こ こ の ⑫ の 例 で

は,softestが,than以 下 のpositiveと 対 比 し た 形 で 用 い られ て い る。 こ れ ら

は い ず れ も絶 対 最 上 級 が 著 者 の 印 象 を 強 調 す る た め に 用 い られ て,文 体 に 詩 的

で 雅 文 的 な趣 が 加 わ る 。 同 様 の 効 果 はevenの 義 が 加 わ る 最 上 級 に も 出 て い

る 。 こ こ の ⑫ のthemostdistant〔=eventhemostdistant〕,⑬ のthelargest

〔=eventhelargest〕,2の(4)のtheleast〔=eventheleast〕 等 が そ の 例 で あ

る 。 こ の よ うな 最 上 級 の 用 法 が 多 い の も ハ ー ン の 随 筆 の 特 徴 で あ ろ う。

1.6動 詞(vERBs)

動 詞 の な か で 特 徴 的 な こ と は,普 通 「be+形 容 詞 」 で 表 現 す る と こ ろ を,自

動 詞 で 表 現 し て い る こ と で あ る。 こ の テ クス トの 中 で は 次 の 例 文 のdominates 一

とrulesが そ の 例 で あ る 。

2.文 法 的 特 徴(GRAMMATIICALFEATURES)

2.1複 文 ・重 複 文 の 長 文(LONGSENTENCES)●

ハ ー ン の 文 体 の 文 法 的 特 徴 は,こ の テ ク ス トの 中 で,複 雑 で 立 体 的 な 複 文 や

重 複 文 が 多 い こ と で あ る。 こ の テ ク ス トは72の 文(Sentence)か ら成 る が,複

文 と 重 複 文 を 合 わ せ た も の と,単 文 と重 文(CompoundSentence)を 合 わ せ

・た も の と の 割 合 は,44対28で あ る 。 こ の テ ク ス トの 中 の 文 の 構 造 上 の も う1つ

の 特 徴 は 長 文 が 多 い こ と で あ る6全 部 で72の 文 の 中 で,30～39語 か ら成 る 文 が

15あ り,そ の 外 に,40語 以 上 か らな る文 が24あ る 。 こ れ ら を 合 わ せ る と,全72

文 中,39文 が30語 以 上 の 長 文 とい う こ と に な る 。 長 文 の 多 い の も ハ ー ン の 随 筆

の 特 徴 だ と 言 え そ うで あ る。

こ れ ら の 長 文 の 中 か ら幾 つ か 取 り上 げ,そ の 他 の 文 法 的 特 徴 も考 察 した い 。

る 人 力 車 の 車 夫 の 特 技 ち ょ っ と し た 親 切,た く ま ざ る行 為 な の だ が,

の 為 に つ い 金 を や り た く な る と い う心 理 を,trotと い う馬 の 動 作 を 表 す 動

詞 の 分 詞 文 句 を 用 い て 描 い て い る 。 こ のtrotting...は3の(1)と 同 様,隠 喩

(Metaphor)の 例 に な る。

次 の2文(5),(6)は,関 係 詞 文 句 と分 詞 や 分 詞 文 句 を 用 い て,車 屋 の 出 で 立 ち

や 風 貌 や 日本 の 書 の 魅 力 を 叙 し た 文 章 で あ る 。

こ の テ ク ス ト全 体 の72文 の な か で,28文 は 重 文 と重 複 文 か ら成 る わ け で あ る

が,重 文 ・重 複 文 の 中 の 独 立 文 句(IndependentClause)カ ミ等 位 接 続 詞(Co-

ordinatingConjunction)を 使 わ な い で,セ ミ コ ロ ン や コ ロ ン を 使 っ て つ な 炉

れ て い る 所 謂 厂無 終 止 文(Run-OnSentence)」 に な っ て い る 例 が 多 い 。 そ の 結

果,文 重 ・重 複 文 も単 文 ・複 文 を 並 べ た も の,と の 印 象 が 強 く な る。 ま た,無

終 止 文 は,話 し 言 葉 を 出 来 る だ け そ の ま ま の 形 で 書 き 言 葉 に 移 そ う とす る と こ

ろ か ら生 じた 構 文 で あ っ て,口 語 体 で あ る 。

セ ミ コ ロ ン や コ ロ ン で つ な が れ た 無 終 止 文 の 内,典 型 的 な 例 を 以 下 に 挙 げ

を・ セ ミコ ロ ンが つ な いで い る。 後半 の単 文 はyouwantthe ...と,本 当 に

買いたいものが・店と店の人か5店 給 む家並みへと広が り,夢 鵬 らみ,

富 士 の 高 嶺 も 大 空 も,つ い に は こ の 美 し い 国 に 住 む 世 に も 愛 す べ き4.千 万 の 日
