Merdeka Square 獨立廣場

The sports ground of the Selangor Club in colonial times, Merdeka Square was where the Independent Malay flag was raised for the first time at midnight, August 31, 1957. It now contains one of the tallest flag poles in the world, and is surrounded by some fine old buildings, including the fabulous Sultan Abdul Samad Building (formerly the British colonial Government Offices), the Royal Selangor Club and St Mary’s Cathedral. It’s a centrally located and pleasant open space from which to begin a visit to Kuala Lumpur, before heading off for the more obvious, modern attractions.獨立廣場在殖民地時期是雪蘭莪俱樂部的運動場，於1957年8月31日午夜首次升起獨立馬來國旗。現時廣場內有世界上最高的旗桿之一，周邊被精美的舊建築物包圍，包括像神話般建築的蘇丹阿都沙末大廈（原是殖民時期英國辦事處）、皇家雪蘭莪俱樂部和聖瑪麗大教堂。獨立廣場位於市中心，開揚的空間給人休閒之感，可以考慮從獨立廣場開始您的吉隆坡之旅，隨後可前往更現代化的景點。

Petronas Towers 雙子塔

Perhaps the most recognisable symbol of the city – and, of course, a symbol of great national pride – the 451.9-metre-tall Petronas Towers were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004, and are still the tallest twin towers. Tourists flock here to walk across the sky bridge that joins towers at the 41st floor, and to visit the 86th-floor observation deck to admire the panoramic views across the city. Kuala Lumpur Tower 吉隆坡塔

The Petronas Towers may be slightly taller (and a couple of years younger), but the 421-metre-high Kuala Lumpur Tower provides the better city views (especially of the Petronas Towers, of course). This is primarily a communications tower, but the main structure near the top contains a revolving restaurant, an interior observation deck (at 276 metres up) and, weather permitting, an open Sky Deck (and the even scarier Sky Box) at 300m, which is not for the faint-hearted. Kampung Baru Colonial British administrators established Kampung Baru as a Malay agricultural settlement in 1899 in order to allow ethnic Malays to enjoy their traditional rural lifestyle and culture within the city limits. Kampung Baru has held out against modernity and outside influence ever since, and it’s a pleasant place to simply wander around (weather permitting) and take in the special atmosphere, and local cuisine. Lake Gardens 湖濱公園

Also known as Perdana Botanical Gardens, this sprawling green space is the city’s oldest major park, and dates back to 1888. One of the most popular attractions here is the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, which is said to be the world’s largest free-flight aviary and keeps more than 3,000 birds. The Gardens are also home to the 80,000-square-foot Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park, as well as orchid and hibiscus gardens, a deer park, and the poignant National Monument. Railway Station 火車站

Completed in 1910, the old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station is one of the city’s most attractive structures. It was designed by Arthur Bennison Hubback, who was also the architect of several other prominent buildings in the country, including the opposite Railway Administration Building and part of the previously mentioned Sultan Abdul Samad Building on nearby Merdeka Square. He also designed the Kowloon Railway Station in Tsim Sha Tsui, of which only the clock tower remains, a reminder of how Kuala Lumpur has preserved its heritage with better care. 舊吉隆坡火車站建於1910，是市內最具吸引力的建築之一。由Arthur Bennison Hubback設計，也是當地其他幾座著名建築的建築師，包括對面的鐵路行政大樓和本文提到的獨立廣場附近的蘇丹阿都沙末大廈的一部分。而香港的尖沙咀九龍火車站也是他的設計，但現只剩下鐘樓，相對之下吉隆坡在保護文化遺產這方面的工作做得更好。

Scotland is divided into six regions: Lowlands, Speyside, Highlands, Campbeltown, Islay and Islands (or Isles). As with wine, each region has its own terroir.

蘇格蘭分為六個威士忌區域，她們是低地、斯佩塞、高地、坎貝爾敦、艾雷和各個小島。跟葡萄酒一樣，每個區域都有她們獨特的風土氣候能夠反映在威士忌裡。

LOWLANDS 低地Although it’s the second biggest whisky region in Scotland, only four distilleries are found here. They’re famous for producing delicate, gentle and clean single malts with triple distillation. The most famous distillery here is Auchentoshan.儘管低地是蘇格蘭的第二大產區，卻只有四間蒸餾廠存在，她們以生產細緻、柔和清爽的三次蒸餾單一麥芽威士忌聞名，歐肯特軒是這裡最具名氣的酒廠。

SPEYSIDE 斯佩塞Taking its name from the River Spey, and situated in the northeastern side of Scotland, more than 60 distilleries are located in Speyside and more than 60 percent of Scotland’s single malt whiskies are produced here, with a broad range of flavours. Famous names include Macallan, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich. Some distilleries such as Macallan and Dalwhinnie confusingly label themselves as Highland Whisky.

• Exclusively from malted barley. 只可使用已發芽的大麥

• Double distillation from pot still. 在壺型蒸餾器進行兩次蒸餾

• At least three years ageing in no more than 700L oak casks. 在不大於700L的橡木桶內陳釀至少三年

HIGHLANDS 高地The largest whisky region, covering two thirds of Scotland. Flavour profiles are diverse: peaty in the northern seaside; light and grassy to the west side; rich and heavy sherried style to the east and south. CAMPBELTOWN 坎貝爾敦This small and remote region used to have more than 30 distilleries, but now only three are left: Springbank, famous for its distinctive smoky and robust whisky, the light and grassy Glen Scotia, and Glenglyne, which reopened in 2004. ISLAY 艾雷The smallest region with most distinctive style. Most of the distilleries use peat to dry the malted barley, showing heavy peat flavours. TALISKER 泰絲卡The only distillery on the Isle of Skye, and founded by MacAskill brothers, Hugh and Kenneth in 1830 at Carbost. Famous

for their intense, powerful, smokey and complex single malts that can connect you

with the ferocious seas just in front of the distillery. Its 18-year-old single malt was named 2007 Best Single Malt in the World at the World Whiskies Awards.

CAOL ILA 卡爾里拉Built in 1846, a traditional whisky house located in North Eastern Islay, near Port Askaig. The peated malt used here, combined with the coastal air that blows into the oak cask during the maturation period, makes a significant impact on the final taste of the whisky. It’s an easy approach Islay whisky, light in flavour, and appealing smoky bacon, peaty aromas are always accompanied with hints of floral and peppery notes.

The striking, undulating façade and surrealist, sculptured rooftop of Antoni Gaudí’s Casa Milà make it one of Barcelona’s most recognisable and popular buildings. Completed in 1910, this

Modernista masterpiece was the architect’s last major project.

Gaudí designed the house – which took four years to build – around two large courtyards, with a core structure of stone and brick, with steel beams and cast-iron columns. The naturalistic and self-supporting limestone frontage quickly earned the building its nickname: La Pedrera, or “The Quarry”.

Several movie directors have used the rooftop as a filming location, including Michelangelo Antonioni for The Passenger (1975) with Jack Nicholson, and more recently (and briefly) Woody Allen for Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008).

Some claim that director George Lucas was visiting Barcelona around the same time as Antonioni, and took inspiration for the Star Wars stormtrooper helmets from the rooftop’s distinctive chimneys.

Casa Milà is also a central location in Dan Brown’s latest novel Origin, and will likely feature prominently in the film version if and when it is eventually made.

Granted World Heritage status by UNESCO in 1984, and still partly occupied as an apartment building, much of Casa Milà’s interior is open to visitors, as is the famous roof terrace. A restored apartment with period furnishings can be viewed, and there is an exhibition dedicated to Gaudí’s and work.

Our very popular tennis programme provides a range of lessons catering to all levels. Placement in groups is based on ability more than age. The coach of each group reserves the

final decision on admittance of any player into the group. All new players must be assessed by either the Tennis Director or Head Tennis Professional before signing up for a specific class.

Most of us need a little extra motivation in our fitness routines now and then, and our Challenges will provide just that.

On September 1, we will start a new challenge, the 1,000-Lap Challenge for our lap swimmers – that’s just 25 laps, three times a week.

This Challenge is designed to keep you motivated – so take your time and learn to love regular exercise!

There’s no need to register – just record your exercise sessions on the sheets provided and we will keep track of your progress.

We will also give out great finisher T-Shirts for all finishers!

The Club has placed 26 recycling bins at the pontoons. They are divided into three categories – Glass, Plastic and Aluminium.

Members and their boat crews are advised to place their recyclable refuse in the appropriate bins.

Please note that two more recycling bins are located at the Upper 2M/F and Upper 3/F car park. We hope that you will find them useful.

For waste oil, please pass Dry Boat Store staff for disposal.

The SeaBin Project organised by TheLuxeNomad.com and the Club was officially installed on July 11. The SeaBin was built in France and shipped here to help

catch floating debris, oil, fuel and detergents, to help keep our Marina clean.

Within its first two weeks of operation, it collected almost 80 kilos of waste. We will continue to monitor the collection data and if numbers are strong from this first initiative with the Club, TheLuxeNomad.com will look to expand their conservation efforts in the Asia-Pacific region.

Health Club Check-inPlease be reminded that Members and their guests must check in at the 5/F Health Club Reception prior to using the Gym, Swim-ming Pool and other Sports and Recreation facilities. Members and guests will be issued with a signed receipt

Club RulesThe Club is a place for leisure and recreation where Members share the extensive facilities that we have to offer. All persons should respect the comfort of other persons using the Club facilities. Members and introduced guests are reminded to kindly observe and abide by the Club rules and regulations and follow instructions of staff members while on Club premises. Below are some basic rules that we would like to bring to your attention.

1. Family assistants are allowed on Club premises to take care of Members’ children. They are required to behave in a proper manner and respect Members’ priority to all facilities.

2. Children should always be supervised by an adult Member or family assistant. No running, screaming or rough playing is permitted.

3. Mobile phone usage is only allowed at private function rooms or common areas such as the lobby. Please do not take pictures or videos with your mobile phones in the changing rooms and spa areas.

4. No parking or waiting is permitted in the entrance driveway.

5. No employee of the Club may be reprimanded by any Member or guest. All complaints in respect of an matter concerning the Club or the behaviour or conduct of any employee must be made in writing to Club management.

Our new Executive Assistant Manager – Food & Beverage, Albert comes from the little green island of Singapore, where he began his career with the Hyatt group. He

went on to work in Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Fuzhou with Park and Grand Hyatt, Intercontinental and Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, before moving to Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul as Executive Assistant Manager Food & Beverage.

Introduction to First Aid Course急救入門課程

In this seminar, Rebecca Bush will explore these questions and more. She will share reading strategies, development timelines, and offer other insights to help parents understand their children’s growth as readers.

Rebecca Bush is a certified reading specialist, special education teacher and dyslexia therapist, and has worked for several years at two international schools in Hong Kong. She is the Primary Division Head of Baker and Bloom Education Centre, ak-12 education organisation that immerses students in academic rigon and creative thinking to prepare them for studing abroad and future careers.

P arenting can be a tough job, and sometimes parents might need tools to help them foster better relationships with their children and feel more confident in their parenting abilities.

The Incredible Years is a series of interlocking, evidence-based programmes for parents, children, and teachers. For children, the benefits can include: reduced conduct problems; a decrease in negative behaviour and conflict with parents at home; decreased aggression and disruptive behaviour in the classroom; better social skills and improved ability to make friends; greater understanding of their own and others’ feelings; better ability to deal with conflict; improved willingness to learn, and greater cooperation with teachers.

Join us for an introductory session to this programme where we will outline the importance of developing a relationship with children through the use of play and outline the theory behind Incredible Years as well as provide a few tools to help start developing this relationship.
