INCLASS EXERCISE 2

Question 1:QuartersSemester

Pros- Get through sequence courses faster- The variety of courses they are allowed to take- Plenty of opportunities to make up their GPA- Huge winter break- Increased course capacity (semester 13 courses/week > quarters 10 courses/week)- More time to recover from a bad start in a class

Cons- Take midterms or finals every 5 weeks

- Less classes overall- Worse summervacation

Question 2 Looking for new students every year Share the list of students through email of classes to make sure Prepare the course detail for students to know classrooms Post lists of required textbooks Introduce some references such as books, websites, and test bank Give homework assignments after lessons Grade homework, give solutions and help students understand hard questions Handle any waiting lists for classes

Question 3Waiting List Process Costs: Cost of lost students who transfer because of unavailable courses Cost of student delay in graduation because of unavailable courses Cost for administrators to arrange for additional seats in existing courses or hire more teachers for new courses

Looking for new students process costs: Cost of advertising Cost of renting rooms, interviewer, tests Cost of grading the test

Question 4Waiting List Process Costs: At a minimum, costs will include: Clerical/advisor costs: 40 hours per semester * $25/hour labor = $1,000 Administrative costs: 4 hours per semester * $100/hour labor = $400

Looking for new students process costs: At a minimum, costs will include: Advertising costs: banner, poster and multimedia $2,000 Grading test costs: $0.5/student * 300 students = $150

Question 5The total cost for each process The waiting list process costs at least $1,400 per semester The looking for new students process costs at least $2,150

Question 6 Some universities in the US keep quarter systems rather than the semester systems because of some reasons: Shorter course durationStudents have more time to study by themselves. They can skip or spend less time and money for bad class. In addition, it is easier to stay motivated compared to going for a full 15-week semester. It keeps student working harder Negative feedback from students, teachers, staffs who like quarter systemIf the university converts to semester system, they wont be familiar with this change. They have to study or teach longer which leads to a problem that they have change syllabus More flexible classes schedule Double majors or minors may be easier for quarter students because of the variety of courses they are allowed to take. Also, if a student falls behind, they have plenty of opportunities to make up their GPA Conversion costs - financial and opportunity costs not incurred if dont convert to semestersIf the university chooses to convert, it has to pay amount of money for this change Course content that is best delivered through repetition and more consistent exposure to material is better suited for the quarter systemQuestion 7This analysis demonstrates the ability to understand the university from a business process perspective and to evaluate these processes from both efficiency and effectiveness perspectives. The student performing this analysis would clearly be demonstrating his/her non-routine skills of abstract reasoning and critical thinking.
