Hi my name is Olivia Pulman and I have been elected as your 2015 Head Girl. I have lived within this community for the majority of my life and have always made an effort to be in-volved in both school and community activities. My elder sister Laura also attended Piopio College and is now studying a Bachelor of Agriculture in Palmerston North. After school I aim to become an Occupational Therapist, as my passion lies with helping people. At the moment I am a volunteer swim teacher at Piopio’s Learn to Swim Club, I have been involved with this club as a swimmer through my childhood, so it seemed natural that I would become a tutor for younger children myself. I thoroughly love working with children and hope to use the certificate I have obtained later in life. In the weekends I work at the Fat Pigeon Café, a job that helps me to continue to improve both my communi-cation and problem solving skills. I hope by the time my turn as Head Girl is through, I will see a student body who are proud of themselves and where they come from. Students who are excited to attend the college and know that almost anything can be obtained through hard work and dedication. Kia ora whanau

My name is Kaleb Adams and I was elected as Piopio College 2015 Head Boy.

Myself as well as our senior leadership team are striving to get the best results out of the

college, creating a new future with the help of our unique and talented Y12 and Y13 group

who we all consider as our brothers and sisters.

Growing up, sports has been my number one priority other than family, friends and of

course school. Having the chance to play rugby league in Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane

and Gold Coast has been an absolute honour, really heart touching honestly and I have

been thankful for all opportunities given to me. From that I gained the knowledge that

without hard work you can’t really get anywhere.

“Work hard, dream big” is a quote I have always followed and has helped me to get to

where I am now. That is why I encourage others to follow beliefs like this.

Coming from Australia I have learnt more than I could ever imagine, some good, some bad.

When I was in Melbourne the average school was around 1000 students where Piopio is

around 200 students. “So it is a big different but to me its a good different”, better

friendships, happier people and it shows we follow our school values “Pride”.

I believe there is always room for improvement that’s where myself and the senior leaders

are here to help, we strive for a better future for students, teachers, the community and

you yes the one reading this.

PRINCIPAL’S PEN

E ngā mātua, e ngā whanaunga me ngā hoa o te kura, tēnā koutou. Dear parents, caregivers and friends of the

College.

The term has started well. We had a fabulous swimming sports day. Results will be published in our next

newsletter. Thank you to parents for their support. We now have over 200 students—30 more than predicted

so we are all happy.

This has meant some class reshuffles and bringing in new teachers to teach the extra students.

Teachers who have left at end of 2014:-

Mike Johnson (Head of PE) Retired

Nathan White (Head of Social Sciences) whose wife has new job in Palmerston North

Anneke Oram (offered to go supernumerary as we had to lose 1.8 staff)

We wish all three best wishes in their future careers and pathways.

Staff joining us:-

Susan O’Halloram —Part Time (Fixed Term) Social Science and Hospitality

Chris Woods —Full Time (Fixed Term) Variety of subjects

Amy Hely —Part Time (Fixed Term) Hospitality, Health and Science

We have advertised for a new Senior Leader who we are expecting to join us Term 3.

As you all know Rob Hallam is retiring. He has served this school community for forty years. He will be missed

by us all. His farewell is on Saturday 7 March at 7.00pm in the College Hall.

It is important our students are ready for learning and I must congratulate the majority. Some students are

still not wearing the correct uniform which is disappointing. Please note we do have some second hand

uniform for sale in our uniform shop and seniors can still order from NZ Uniforms, via the College. Blazers are

now ready to purchase.

Thursday 19 March 6.30pm is an important date. This is when you have a chance to Meet The Teachers and

members of the Board of Trustees. This important occasion gives you a chance to listen to the curriculum

plans and opportunities we have for your children. It will finish with a BBQ and some team games for those of

you who are energetic. This informative evening comes in response to the Parent Action Group’s idea and one

of our goals this year is to improve communications between home and school.

The Charter which sets out our targets for 2015 after analysing the results of 2014 can be viewed on our web-

site http:piopio.school.nz I look forward to meeting you and all of our students, in 2015 and learning alongside

them and working together towards our vision.

Your quality systems, attention to detail and drivers’ safety record are very much appreciated. Rob Hallam – Bus Controller

ATTENDANCE and PUNCTUALITY 100% attendance is very important. One characteristic of successful students is that they attend

SELF REFERRAL CLINICS Self-Referral clinics are offered by the Public Health Nurse, at Monday lunchtime, and by the Doctor (day to be confirmed). These clinics provide students with the opportunity to access health advice and treatments. Clinics are confidential, do not require parent consent and students can attend alone, with a friend or as a small group. Health topics discussed include but are not limited to; sexual health and contraception, smoking, drug and alcohol concerns and mental health. The clinic has now moved to the first aid room behind the school reception.
