Achievements as Director of

Institute of Health Care

Under my 10 and a half years’ directorship, the following major events occurred: 1. The Division of Medical laboratory Science, eventually changing its name to Applied Biomedical

Science, in 2009 had its BSc. (Hons.) degree receiving accreditation by the Institute of Biomedical Science, UK, in 2001.

2. Since 2002, I co-ordinated yearly summer schools hosting Faculty and Students from the College of Integrated Science and Technology, James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Virginia. An example of a project: http://www.iihhs.jmu.edu/malta/presentations/Performance Management & Quality of Care of Mater.pptx https://secure.um.edu.mt/newsoncampus/features/2009?result_90449_result_page=12 http://www.um.edu.mt/news_on_campus/features/2010?result_113026_result_page=12

3. Presented a report submitted by the delegation of technical experts from the EU Commission (TAIEX) that visited the Institute in February 2002, shows that the courses in Nursing and Midwifery have attained European standards.

4. In May 2003, organized a 4-day workshop on Academic Teaching conducted by a visiting lecturer from the Teaching and Learning Centre, University College Dublin, held in May 2003. Academic members of the Institute of Health Care and the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery were invited and actively participated in the workshop.

5. In January 2004, organized a Symposium with the Theme “Working Together to Attain Excellence in the Health Care Professions" http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20040104/university/excellence-in-health-care-professions.133003

6. In March 2004, organized a seminar on Problem-Based Learning delivered by Professor Maggie Savin Baden from the University of Central Lancashire.

7. In January 2005, organized a three-day series of seminars on Leadership supported by the Health Services Management Division and in close collaboration with the Ministry of Health to members of academia and to the Ministry of Health. Dr Michael Grojean, Director of the Centre for Leadership Excellence at Aston University, Birmingham was the guest speaker and facilitated the seminars.

http://www.um.edu.mt/pressreleases/2005/ihc_seminar.html 8. The Divisions of Radiography, Communication Therapy, Nursing and Midwifery participate actively in

yearly the Erasmus programs hosting students from across Europe. The Divisions are also running student exchange programs. A number of members of staff of The Institute of Health Care also participated in staff exchange programs.

9. All undergraduate certificate courses were discontinued and upgraded to Degree courses. Only Nursing and Environmental Health maintained the Diploma course.

10. The Divisions of Midwifery, Mental Health, Podiatry, Environmental Health, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Health upgraded their courses from Diploma to BSC. (Hons.).

11. The Divisions of Nursing (including Mental Health), Midwifery, and Radiography developed new Master Courses.

12. The Divisions of Applied Biomedical Sciences, and Communication Therapy accepted MPhil/PhD students.

13. The Communication Therapy Division was awarded an Individual Mobility Grant under Tempus Programme and participation of a 4-year Marie Curie FP6 project on the prevalence and incidence of communication disorders in the Maltese population

14. Launch of E-Learning Degree in Nursing. http://insiteronline.com/news/university-launches-e-learning-degree/

15. Numerous Bilateral Agreements were signed with well-known Universities world-wide, amongst which: Cardiff University, Leeds University; Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm; St George’s University, London; and James Madison State University, Virginia, U.S.A.

16. The greatest challenges in the last five years: A. Migration of IHC from St Luke’s Hospital to Mater Dei Hospital: I was actively involved in negotiations, meetings and site visits spanning over the period 2002 – 2007 to secure the best possible facilities for IHC Administration block, offices for academic members of staff; state-of-the art laboratories for Nursing, Midwifery and all the Allied Health Professions; as well as auditoria, lecturing facilities and seminar rooms. B. In 2008-2010, leading the team within the Division of Radiography, I negotiated with the Ministry of Health and Cardiff University, a new course in BSc (Hons.) Radiography was offered for the first team in October 2010, as a dual qualification in Therapy and Diagnostics with a mixed Faculty from the University of Malta and the University of Cardiff, as well as students going for 6-month attachment in radiotherapy in Wales. This secured more than 4 million Euro Investments from the Ministry of Health. C. 2008-2010: The Institute of Health Care born in 1987 becomes the 12th Faculty within the University of Malta, officially named Faculty of Health Sciences. As Director, I was actively involved with Rector’s office and IHC staff to adopt a dynamic future strategy, necessitating human resources, academic, administrative and infrastructural changes to secure the transformation, which was only possible thanks to my effective leadership and committed team I was leading.
