75th AnniversaryBrighton National Speed Trials

THE BRIGHTON HALF MILEIn this 75th anniversary year the Trials will be timed from a standing start over

a half-mill" course instead of the kilometre distance of recent years, thus revertingto the format first adopted In 1924 and which continued until 1938. It is thustimely to review the origins of the Trials and the history of the Brighton Half Mile.

Seventy five years ago, that great Brightonian, the late Sir Harry Preston, persuaded the Town Council to lay a motor racing track, a tarmac surfaced roadand the first of its kind, along the sea front between the Palace Pier to within aquarter of a mile of Black Rock. It was named the Madeira Road, and was thevenue for the first Brighton Speed Trials in 1905. The Madeira Terrace, theelevated walk running along the sea front, made a splendid grandstand, and inSir Harry's words "thousands of people watched the races from there, and allBrighton and half England talked of nothing else during those four exciting days".

The 1905 meeting lasted from July 19 to 22. The races were started at the BlackRock end of the track, and Cars were classified mostly according to rolling chassisprice; £300 to £400, £400 to £500, and so on up to £800 to £900. They were timedover the flying start kiJometre, with and without passengers. The motor cyclistscompeted in handicap races over the standing start mile based upon engine capa-city, weight of machine, and weight of rider. The heroes of the meeting wereClifford Earp, who on one run covered the flying start kilometre at 97.25 mph inhis six cylinder Napier car, and the French motor cyclist, Henri Cissac, who brokethe world's record over that distance on his 14 hp twin-cylinder Peugeot at 86mph.

Eighteen years were to pass before another meeting took place, when, on JulyJ4, 1923, the Brighton and Hove Motor Cycle and Light Car Club organised anopen event. The start was placed at the PaJace Pier end and competitors matchedagainst one another in a series of untuned "knockout" races, a system thatcaused some dissatisfaction. This was abandoned in 1924, the Club decided upona measured half mile with a standing start, over which competitors were run inpairs and individually timed. Fastest time of day was made by the motor cyclist,E. Spencer, at 69.2 mph on his 494cc Douglas against J. Joyce's 64.2 mph in hisJ496cc A.C. car.

Perhaps the police ban on speed trials on public roads in J925 would explainwhy there were no further meetings until 1932, when someone remembered thatthe Madeira Drive was Corporation property and not subject to the ban. Theenterprising Brighton and Hove Motor Club obtained permission from the Corpo-ration to use it, switched their annual speed trials from Brooklands to Brighton, and held them without interruption until 1938.

The finest exponents in the art of getaway were to compete over the BrightonHalf Mile, but if one had to name one above all others it would be the motorcyclist, the late Eric Fernihough, who wrested from the German BMW factory theworld's records, both solo and sidecar, over the standing and flying start kilo-metre, on his self-prepared supercharged and unsupercbarged 996cc BroughSuperiors.

Femihough was lavish in his praise of both Corporation and Club, and neverfailed to remind competitors of the debt they owed to Sir Harry Preston. His1936 course record of 9O.00mph will be lowered; but at the time it was as electri-fying as Henk Vink's 127.97 mph over the kilometre in 1978 on his lOOOccsuper-charged nitro-methane burning Kawasaki Special and Terry Smith's record runwith a terminal speed of 175mph.

Message from the Mayor of BrightonCouncillor John Leach

While the National Speed Trials is but one of a great number ofsporting events taking place on Madeira Drive each year, it isdifficult to believe that any other occasion creates more excitement.

These Trials, so successfully organised by the Brighton and HoveMotor Club, were established more than 70 years ago and are theoldest motor sporting event in the British calendar. 1 am sure the1980 Trials will continue that fine tradition of sportsmanship forwhich the event has become well known.

It is with much pleasure that I send greetings to the organisers, the participants and all those who will be spectators on Saturday,13th September.

The "tarmac" begins at the eastern end of Terrace and endsat the eastern end of the Aquarium, both east and west of it i.. a goodstretch of straight road, while the incline leading to Marine Parade oppositeSussex Square suggests an ideal flying start.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 19th, 1905.The first event starred at about 2.15 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon of

last week in magnificent weatber. A large number of people were present towitness the races. Owing to the length of the course and the many pointsfrom which a splendid view of tbe cars could be obtained, the crowd did notappear as great as it really was. The arrangements were really well carriedout, and every facility was given to members of the press in the performanceof their duties. Midway between the starting and finishing points there is asmall reading room on the top of the Marine Parade. This was used byMr. Orde as a conning tower from which he could get into communicationwith every part of the course by telephone.

The telegraph system of affording information to the public wasexcellent and served admirably to excite and maintain tbe public interest. The Ioltowing officials looked after the races: -Mr. Alfred Bird, judge;Col. H. C. L. Holden, Messrs. R. B. Phillips and C. D. Rose, M.P., clerksof the course; IMr. I. Ochs, starter; Mr. 1. Lyons Sampson, clerk of thescales; Messrs. T. H. Woollen and A. V. Ebblewhite, timekeepers; and Mr.J. W. Orde, secretary. The Old Ship Hotel was the headquarters of theA.C.G.B.!., and tbroughout the meeting it might justly be said to haveearned the title of the "Hub of Brighton," since it never ceased to be therallying centre throughout the week.FRIDAY, JULY 21st, 1905

Extracts reprinted by kind"The Autocar," July 29th 1905

Another superb afternoon, a cloudless sky and a blazing suo. Thechief events of interest in tbe afternoon's programme were the ladies' handi-cap race and the race for the Daily Mail challenge cup, and these eventswere specially attractive. because not only were the competing cars ofTitanic power, but because two were announced to be driven by ladies. Ofthese, Miss Claudia LasseU, wh.o was down to drive a 90 h.p. Mercedes, didnot compete since it was reported that one of the gears of her car bad beendamaged by the careless driving of a mechanician. Miss Dorothy Levitt, however, drove splendidly in every round of the event, and seemed as muchat home on an 80 h.p. Napier as on a 6 b.p. De Dion.

Tn this event (Daily Mail Challenge Cup) Mr. Clifford Earp (winner)beat the British kilometre record. Previous 10 Friday it stood at 26 2/5 sec.,or 87.24 m.p.h. It will be seen that Miss Levitt reacbed ber greatest speedin the second round, and we believe she is the first lady to have accomplis bed78.71 m.p.b. on a racing car. Naturally the public took great interest inher performance, she and Earp receiving the major portion of the spectators'applause.SATURDAY, JULY 22nd, 1905.

Just before the race, Mr. Orde, who. of course, acted as directeuren chef during the meeting, showed us his "conning tower." This in realitywas the Marine Parade lift station, at which passengers arrive from theMadeira Road below. In tbe front of the shelter there is a covered balconyfitted with a garden seat. This was kept secluded from the public by meansof locked doors, the sanctity of which was guarded by a constable. Oneither side telephones were arranged by means of which communication wasestablished with every part of the course and the timekeepers. The com-manding position, moreover. of the balcony enabled the secretary to seewhat was happening at both ends, and at his command another constablestood on the balcony with red and yellow flags to signal "course clear" and"car coming." At tbe finishing post the brilliant collection of cups andprizes was displayed on a table, guarded by two policemen and acommis innaire.

At the close of the meeting the prizes were distributed by Mrs.Holden.

. In conclusion. it must be admitted that everything considered tbeBrighton Motor Week has proved itself sufficiently not only to warrant theexpenditure on the Madeira course, but to ensure the repetition of anothersuch week in 1006.
