Alan Turing, a British mathematician, created anexperiment to prove if computers think or not. In thisexperiment, called Turing Test, some people are asked tointeract with something from another room through a
computer. They don't know whether if they interact withanother person or with a computer. Each person asksuestions and receives answers and at the end of the test,he or she decides whether the thing in the other room is amachine or a person. If a computer is considered to !e aperson, or the attendant can't determine any di"erence, the computer passes the test.
There have !een organi#ed contests in which machines
are challenged to pass the Turing Test, !ut no computerhas passed the test yet.
A philosopher has dou!ted the experiment, saying that itis !ased on !ehavior, rather than on thought. $e says thatit is very important to use the same code to communicate.$e also argues that a computer can !e programmed togive answers to particular uestions and pass the testdespite the fact that the machine did not make use of
arti%cial intelligence.
