rollhtte canal, located in the Southwest part of Swe-

den, has a difference in altitude of 44 meters, hand-led by six locks. One single lockage demands 8000-12000 m3 of water. In May 2009, the lock system wasclosed down for maintenance and repair; this requiredfour of the locks to be drained and kept dry for four days.Grindex pumps in the sizes Matador and Maxi wereused for the task. During 14 hours, a total of over 37 mil-lions of litres of water were drained away.

A 200-year-old canal with 44 m of difference inaltitude

Trollhtte canal was opened for traffic for the first ti-me back in the year 1800. This allowed sailing ships topass through the river Gta lv all the way from Gothen

burg up to Lake Vnern. The river has been widened se-veral times since the opening. The canal is 82 km long;

Bu miktar Gota Alv Nehri'nin 9 sani-yelik debisidir. 200 yllk yaflna ramen, bu havuzlar,mekanik ve elektriksel olarak modern bir flekilde kontroledilmektedir. Bu havuzlardan 4000 metrik tonluk gemi-ler geebilmekte, limit deerleri 13 m genifllik, 5,4 m de-rinlik ve 89 m uzunluktur.

amal olarak kapatlmaktadr. 2009 yl Mays aynda,gzden geirme amal olarak 4 adet havuzun kapatl-mas planland. 9 Mays saat 06.00 ile 12 Mays saat

20.00 arasnda bu havuzlarn tamamen kurutulmas,tm suyun tahliye edilmesi projesi gereklefltirildi. Vebu esnada bahsi geen su miktar ise ok bykt. 90 m.uzunluu, 13 m. genifllii, 8 m. derinlii bulunan bu ka-nallarda 37.440 m3 su, baflka bir deiflle 37 milyon litresu yer almaktadr. Btn bu miktar suyun da 24 saattenaz bir zamanda tahliye edilmesi gerekiyordu.

ten km of these are excavated while the rest is a naturalpart of the river. The difference in altitude is 44 metresand is managed with locks in three places: One lock inLilla Edet is managing six metres and in Trollhttan are

four locks with a total difference in altitude of 32 metres.The last lock is located in Brinkebergskulle and managessix metres.

At every lockage, 8000-12000 m3 water is deman-ded. Every lock normally contains 9360 m3 of water; thisis equal to nine seconds of flow in the Gta lv River.Despite their 200 years of age, the locks are modernwith electric and mechanical operation of the locks. Do-uble lock floors gives calmer movement of water duringboth filling and emptying of the locks.

Ships up to 4000 metric tonnes can pass the locks;the limits are 89 metres of length, 13 metres width and5.4 metres depth.

Service and repairWith intervals of a few years, the locks are closed

down for service and repair. In May 2009 four lockchambers were scheduled for an overhaul. From May 9at 0600 to May 12 at 2000, they needed to be drainedcompletely. And we are talking about big amounts ofwater here; as every lock chamber is 90 metres long, 13metres wide and 8 metres deep you end up with a totalof 37440 m3, or 37 million of litres with water. All thismust be drained away in less than 24 hours.

Renting pumps from GrindexThe Swedish Maritime Administration is responsible

for the locks. As the time frame was narrow it was impe-rative that the whole operation went as scheduled. Staff

from Grindex technical department assisted with thecalculation of the pumps. Based on facts from earlierlock chamber drainage operations with Grindex pumps,a time between nine and 16 hours was estimated. Forthis the pump models Matador and Maxi were recom-mended for the task. At the pressure height of 6 metres,

the pumps have a flow of 306 and 684 m3

per hour. A total of 17 pumps were used,including backup pumps.

The time frame for the draining of thelock chambers was set to 24 hours, afteronly 14 hours it was dried out and readyfor work.
