  • EDSNOTE

As we approached the deadline of this issue, Design Indaba was about to draw to a close and WDC2014 was well under way, two reasons to feel happy and proud. We saw more individuality and originality than in previous years, and there was a strong sense of social enterprise present clear signals that South African and African design is finding its voice. For the first time at the Design Indaba we saw a stand dedicated to township design where great products, such as the braaiskottel and a geyser fashioned out of a bucket and a kettle element, showed that necessity is not only the mother of invention but that design solutions are potential drivers of the micro-economy of a communitys needs. Equally satisfying was buying a pair of pyjama bottoms to help fund an initiative to curb the spread of malaria a fashionable front for an important cause.

In another big highlight at the Design Indaba conference the brilliant British designer and architect, Thomas Heather-

wick, (he of the magnificent copper cauldron at the London Olympics), unveiled his plans for the new Museum of Contemporary African Art (MOCAA) at the V&A Waterfront a building inside a cluster of 42 concrete tubes, evoking a grain silo. The involvement of this internationally-acclaimed architect will surely connect the project to a much larger audience and emphasise the museums importance in the global art network.

It will not only be a great building for Cape Town, but also for Africa and all its artists. On the home front, Team DECO had a lot of fun at our Design Indaba stand an African photo booth where participants could take #Decoselfie pictures. Turn over the page to see our favourites!

After all that fun were back at work, in our new offices, putting the final touches on an issue filled to the brim with practical ideas for your home.

    Enjoy!

  • Up-and-coming ceramic artists Chuma Maweni and Alexia Klompje are providing a fresh perspective on ceramics, breaking

the mould of this ancient craft. DECO visited these two artists to find out what

    was cooking in their kilns

DO YOU THINK CERAMICS SHOULD BE FUNCTIONAL? I don't think it 'should' be anything. I studied architecture where 'form follows function' was our mantra. What I love about ceramics is the freedom of working with clay as a form of expression.

HOW DID KLOMP CERAMICS COME ABOUT? While recovering from a brain tumour, I needed to take a break from styling and decided to slow down and focus on my ceramics. Working with clay was so healing, and my first collection came out of a need to tell my story, which others found inspiring, and so my range was born.

WHO DO YOU THINK IS DOING GREAT WORK LOCALLY? We have so many talented ceramicists in South Africa. I love Martin Swart, Sally Louw, Louise Gelderblom, Lisa Firer, Imiso Ceramics, Helen Vaughan, Gerhard Swart and Anthony Harris of Ceramic Matters, to name a few. DO YOU WORK TOWARDS EXHIBITIONS OR SELL TO SHOPS? Currently I sell to shops but hope to exhibit in the future. Klomp Ceramics is just starting out and it can go anywhere from here. • WHAT DOES AN ORDINARY DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?I arrive at the studio, plan my day, figure out deadlines and check what needs to go into the kiln. I then get into my old clothes covered with clay and facilitate a two-hour class with children from the School of the Deaf in Cape Town. Unfortunately the only sign language I know is working with clay. The most important part of these lessons, for me, is seeing the kids' smiles, hearing their laughter and witnessing their enjoyment. After the class, my day moves on to creating ceramic bowls or designing a new shape for any exhibitions that are coming up.

WHOSE WORK DO YOU ADMIRE?Charmaine Haines for her abstract and stylised ceramic forms. Antony Shapiro for his simple yet elegant shapes, functional and decorative ceramics. South Africa has some of the best ceramic artists and designers in the world.

DREAM PROJECT? Working at Art in the Forest has been a dream project, the outreach work I do with the children and creating ceramics for various galleries. I would, however, like to one day create a collection to be shown in national and international galleries or be invited for a solo exhibition. www.lightfromafricafoundation.co.za

  • WIN R200 000 WORTH OF PRIZES WITH EFFICIENT LIGHTING DESIGNFew design elements are as versatile and wield as much power to dene and transgure a space as does light. Photographer John Sexton puts it simply: It is light that reveals, light that obscures, light that communicates true words for any interior designer or homeowner who would dare to explore this fascinating medium. The challenge, of course, remains of how to strike the perfect balance between functionality and creative expression.

This year, yet again, the Eskom Energy Efcient Lighting Design Competition will showcase local lighting designs that exude individuality and challenge convention. The search is on for talented South Africans with air and design savvy. The kind of artistic intuition that sparks new trends. And, above all, embody a special gift that has the ability to turn pure science into pure art.

Designers, DIY-loving homeowners and other artistic souls are invited to design a luminaire (light tting) that makes use of energy-efcient technology, such as compact uorescent (or energy-saving lamp), light-emitting diodes (LEDs), bre optic or any energy efcient lighting system or product suitable for residential application.

Closing date of entry: 15 August 2014 This years theme: Celebrating 20 years of democracy

EDS TIPS WHEN COMMISSIONING A BESPOKE PIECEOR SERVICE1. Brief: A concise, written brief is crucial toavoid misunderstandings.

    2. Have it in writing: Unless you know the artist well, or have worked together before, it is wise to draw up and sign a contract.

    3. Clarity: Have a clear idea of what you want, but be open to suggestions.

    4. Patience: Bespoke commissionsare labour intensive and therefore time consuming.

    5. Check: Remember you are the designer, so be part of the process. Check in on the project intermittently to ensure you are happy with the progress.

    6. Cost: Custom-made, one-off items are not necessarily always more expensive, as they allow you the flexibility to make decisions that suit your budget.

Service: Helping you grow your own food

If you are the kind of traveller that simplyhas to bring some of your journey home, then India is the destination for you. Danand Caseys visual feast of a home is testament to this. After living in India forthree years, they returned to Cape Townto begin their biggest on-going creativeprojects: the home they want to spendthe rest of their lives in, and, TimelessIndia Journeys, a bespoke travel servicethat offers extraordinary experiences inIndia. During their time in India they travelled all over the country, collectingthings from each place they visited. Casey explains that different parts of India are known for making different things Jaipurfor fabric, Jodhpur for furniture, Calcutta for Kantha Art (stitched painting), and aspart of her research for her tailor-madetravel service, she personally visited all the shops to ensure that all the best treasurescould be found by her guests.

Casey and Dan found this doorframe on the side of

the road in Udaipur, India, and brought it home to create this vintage, yet

modern entrance. The lotus flower is from Udaipur, well

    known for its marble work

Travel to India with this tailor-made travel service. Like this imaginitive house, which tells the colourful

and covetable story of a couples adventures in India, you too can bring the joy of India home

CallingIndia PHOTOGRAPHS JEAN-MARC WULLSCHLEGER/LIVING AGENCY TEXT BIELLE ROSS

  • DECOPROFILE

In the leafy suburb of Tamboerskloof, with their architect Eric van den Berg, the couple created a materially beautiful blank canvas onto which they could incorporate their Indian lives, and all the amazing things they experienced there and brought home. Parts of the house were literally built around the things they brought back: the kitchen space was designed around the antique chemist cupboard they found in Delhi; and the mezzanine, lounge and kitchen area was based around the staircase bought in Jodhpur. The house was designed with the couples collections of art, design, toys, textiles and, of course, treasures from their travels in mind. They explain that these collections are a way to make visual their shared history. Another noteworthy aspect of their home is the use of colour. Casey reckons that Indias love of colour is contagious, that it brings a lot of joy to their home. We couldnt agree more. This home tells a wonderful story of their adventures, a happy, vibrant story that will no doubt continue to be embellished. And we, properly impressed, cannot wait to call on India.

Home exchange has become the new couch surfing an affordable accommodation option when

    every tasteful traveller

The most expensive part of travelling especially when considering our ailing currency is accommodation. Really good accommodation does not come cheap. And who hasnt been disappointed, even horried, to arrive in a foreign country to nd that the 20 Euros deposit on the quaint, clean room overlooking La Rambla is a shoebox, with no en suite, where Spanish brawlers break bottles outside your window and argue loudly until 4am?

Home exchange is a great, and affordable, way to travel. Behomm, founded by graphic designer duo Agust Juste and Eva Calduch, promises to be the future of home exchange for the discerning traveller. Its based on the shared economy movement, which connects like-minded people with a similar love of tasteful things and an interest in a more enriching travel experience but only those whose livelihoods are derived from the pursuit of beauty. We became obsessed with the idea of how incredible it would be to connect designers and visual artists worldwide with similar passions this is not only about nding free accommodation around the world, says Juste. We do believe that sharing is the future!

So if you are the proud owner of a beautiful home, love international travel and have an interest in connecting with people around the world, this service is for you. The founders stress that this is not about seeking out luxurious homes, that beauty has very little to do with luxury. All beautiful, any sized homes qualify, the only homes that are turned away are only those that are a total mess. The homes are scattered on almost every continent and country from Amsterdam to Tokyo, San Francisco to Cape Town. The site is also the very rst by-invitation-only home exchange platform, making it very secure. Visit www.behomm.com

HOW IT WORKS By signing up and listing your home, you will then be able to search for and view homes, and contact members through a secure internal system that hides personal contact information. The site works as a secure introductory middleman. Members enjoy unlimited exchanges, with no extra surprise fees.

IS THERE SOMETHING SPECIAL THATYOU DO FOR YOUR GUESTS?When guests come to visit I always make sure theyhave lists and addresses of all the best places to eat and see in the area. I am an avid outdoor enthusiast,so guests who stay with me will have access to a lot of information of where to hike, canoe and ski, as wellas access to all of my outdoor equipment. AsI live in the inner city, I give my guests access to ourbicycles as well.

ANY OTHER THOUGHTS YOU CAN SHARE ABOUT HOME EXCHANGE?One of the advantages of a home exchange is that thehomeowners have a great sense of place and will beable to direct their guests to specic experiences thatonly the locals know about. And we all have anaesthetic sense of pride in our living spaces.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE BEHOMM EXPERIENCE THAT YOU LIKE THE MOST?My husband and I are architects, and I am also a surface pattern designer, so we really appreciate good design and our lifestyle reects that. When we are travelling we like to look for things that interest and inspire us, and that includes the places we stay at. Before we started home swapping we often looked for nice boutique hotels or places that are unique and well-designed. When we discovered home swapping it became clear straight away that it's the best way to travel. We get to stay in comfortable homes where everything you need is already available. With the amazing homes on offer, we do not have to sacrice practicality for our appreciation of great design.

Residents are descendants from as diverse places as India, Ceylon, North and East Africa and Madagascar. What binds them and grounds them is food, and the customs and celebrations linked to the serving of it. Sharing a meal is something that breaks down cultural barriers between people; it is a celebration and an essential ingredient for conserving their heritage.

The new recipe book Bo-Kaap Kitchen by Craig Fraser reveals the heart of the Cape Malay people through personal

stories and anecdotes, recipes, historical images and beautiful visuals. The warmth and character of the people shine through as they share their stories about cooking, family bonds and strong faith.

The book uses food as a way to access culture, and provides a rare glimpse of what it is to live in this unique community of people who share similar values, language, ceremonies even architecture and choice of house colours.Taste history, and the future, as community members take you on a culinary journey through their Bo-Kaap kitchens, where the food is the essential ingredient in their sense of the collective and of fellowship.

y friends thought I was bonkers when I turned the biggest room downstairs into the kitchen. They were even more confused when I transformed the largest bedroom into a family bathroom, laughs homeowner Lucy Davenport. But Lucy, design consultant and interior stylist, is a lady who

knows a thing or two about converting impossible spaces into liveable homes. Big houses with tiny kitchens and bathrooms are a no-no, she quips. Having recently returned from living in Los Angeles, Lucy and husband Dom got used to large, light-lled spaces that are functional yet fabulous. And that is precisely what she has created in their West London meets West Coast home. My style is very Californian-inuenced but with a large dollop of English idiosyncrasy, asserts Lucy. I try to extract real personality from a place by overlaying it with layers of imaginative and quirky ideas, while still creating a functional home.

When Lucy and Dom rst saw the house in 2007 it most certainly wasnt love at rst sight. Everything was painted a dark claret colour a horrendous mix of faux-Victorian hideousness and the worst grotty pub you could imagine. The gruesome, patterned carpet bordered on being psychedelic! Knowing exactly what they wanted a reasonably-priced house with good bones that could accommodate our large family Lucy with her design background had the vision to transcend the tacky into something magical, using colour. Cool colours can be an easy way to create change without spending a fortune, she explains.

Under Lucys experienced eye, the space underwent an enormous transformation. My initial task was to get every room, and the woodwork, painted white. Then, with a basic blank canvas to work with, I could start layering and decorating it in my style. We relocated the kitchen from one side of the house to the other to create a large family space come diner. A serviceable Ikea kitchen was installed, but she camouaged it with imaginative styling ideas and colour. Next, the old kitchen became a chilled-out family living room and, nally, the bedrooms were all given Lucys creative charisma.

What does the future hold? Were still California dreaming, admits Lucy. Dom checks out the surf reports every day with that faraway, wistful look in his eye. Meanwhile, Im planning new extensions to the house to give me more rooms to decorate.

A sprawling, chaotic place where the contrast between rich and poor is keenly felt: the Mexican elite retreat into heavily-guarded villas, while its less fortunate inhabitants claim hut-like dwellings in the citys wilder suburbs. The inner city is one of these

where, for a long time, no-one was particularly interested in its historical beauty and hundred-year-old buildings. But like any gentrication story, the Mexican creative set rediscovered its magic and began moving in. Hector Galvan was one of these who fell for the rich, ornate faade of a double-story house in Chihuahua Street. Built in 1916, the intricate detailing of the structure reminded him of Catalonian artist and architect Gaudi: all the rooms of the house open onto a long courtyard, in the middle of which a stone and iron staircase leads to the rst oor with an entire wraparound balcony. Only a few years ago, this work and office space was in ruins, a result of the massive earthquakes in Mexico in 1985. After careful restoration, the roominess of the space was revived with windows and doors cleverly swapped out.

Hector knew that his plans to live and work under one roof would be realised here. I nd it inspiring when work and living areas can ow together, as in that ow the house comes alive, claims Hector.

At 9am the house does come alive as a handful of young people congregate in the kitchen and get to work for Hectors design bureau Omlette. The kitchen, painted in a chocolate brown, like most of the rooms in the 350 square metre house, has many functions. Meeting room, hangout room and laboratory, its here that chocolate creations for Hectors other label Boom! are invented and poured into crazy forms, such as bombs and soldiers. Through his fashion and furniture design, and his interiors work for hotels and restaurants, he is conscious of the social aspects of the Mexican identity, highlighting Mexican handmade techniques and materials.

In the evenings, Hector, a self-professed epicurean, has friends over for dinner; chairs are taken out of the office and put around the improvised table in the living room on the ground oor, working and living area coming together again in the most seamless and wonderful way.
