Kiev Connolly- AriolaKiev Connolly, son of the Irish composer andactor Kevin Connolly, began his career in theSeventies with bands like The WarehouseBluesband and Smog. In 1976 he joined thegroup Southern Comfort and for a period ofover 4 years he toured all over the world.During one of the tours in Europe, he left theband and stayed in Berlin "Cause there'salways something going on there". It was therewhere he started the band MissingPassengers, a ten -piece big band who'srepertoire consists mainly of Kiev's owncompositions. Did She Tell You shows theband from their best side: a full and energeticsound backed up with solid horns andConnolly's strong voice. One other Ariola artist who deserves to bementioned is Udo Juergens. He had his firsthit in 1960 with a song entitled Jenny and hisinternational career started in '64 with hiscontribution to the Eurovision Song Contestentitled Walk Away. 1984 was really the crownyear for Juergens with three further highlightsof his long career: his new album Hautnah wasin the charts for months (and was his best soldalbum in 6 years), his first book Smoking AndBlue Jeans was a bestseller and sold 50.000copies in the first four weeks after itspublication and his concert tour 1984-85became the most succesful tour in his career.

THE SHARE OF FOREIGN MUSICIN MAJOR GERMAN ARD STATIONS

Big debates are going on in the German media about the share of foreign music as played on thenational German channels. Not only in Germany there are people who say that national radio shouldgive far more attention to local products and should likewise decrease the amount of foreign (mostlyUK and US) productions. A trend towards nationalism in music programming and the re- evaluation ofone's own local product. On most of the stations the share of foreign music has increased. Bayerischer Rundfunk liftedthis share up to 0,42% in the year 1983, the SWF 1,11% and the NDR 1,28%. Striking exception to thisupward movement is the DLF who gradually decreased its share of foreign music with 3,59%. Thestation that plays the most foreign music is the NDR, closely followed by SR, WDR and RIAS. it wouldbe interested to find out how this situation is in other European countries and to see if this trendtowards nationalism in music programming also exists on the same scale.

GO GO ... SAY WHAT ?1If you think you had it all, from punk to newwave, from breakdance, hip hop to Hi- NRGhere comes the latest rage of what couldbecome the next big thing in black music - GoGo. This dance music was born in WashingtonD.C. and has been flourishing in the clubs overthere since the late Seventies, It has its ownterminology and its own style of dancing. Thefirst exponent of this unique blend of funk andrap were Little Benny and The Masters whoalready made a chart -entry in the UK with WhoComes To Boogie. Basically it is all JamesBrown recycled and recycled all over with theemphasis on a live-ish atmosphere, filled withcall and answer style rap (Say What? Let's GetSmall, Holler At Me, Numb To The Max etc.)and live percussion. Some exponents:Troublefunk (Drop The Bomb- Sugar Hill),Pump Blenders (Love Boat- Cool Tempo),Chuck Brown And The Soul Searchers (WeNeed Some Money- Mastermix) and D.C.Allstars (Bustin' Loose- Streetsound)... A010GUIDE

One of Europe's hottest releases at thismoment is definitely Some Like It Hot by ThePower Station, with a line-up consisting ofJohn and Andy Taylor of Duran Duran, RobertPalmer on vocals and Chic drummer TonyThompson (see seperate story in last week'sissue). The record itself is a nice mix of funkand rock and deserves some extra plays to getnoticed. Another record heating up theairwaves at the moment is Team For Fears'new album Songs From The Big Chair. Withthis second album the group establishthemselves as one of the major bands of theEighties with a long history yet to come,. Theirnew single Everybody Wants To Rule TheWorld has the same compelling quality as theirlast smash Shout. And we have so many moretracks we love, like The Working Hour, a songthat gradually builds up into a irresistible soundwith nice sax backings on the end; /Believe isdedicated to Robert Wyatt and the song hasindeed the same vulnerable atmosphere ofsome of Wyatt's compositions; and finallyHead Over Heels, another contender for rockradio (by the way, the cassette contains sixmore tracks than the album version!!).Bob Geldof's initiative is getting an equalfollow-up in the UK now, Jerry Dammers (of 2 -Tone and Specials fame) organized a band -aidto assist famine relief in Africa with members ofMadness, UB40, Afrodisiac (Costello's backingvocal band) and two members of the original

Pioneers to do a re- make of the Pioneers' skaclassic Starvation on the Madness ownedZarjazz label. The single is catchy, uptempo, has a good production and good chances tochart.Alison Moyet has a great single out called ThatOld Devil Called Love and there is someexciting product from the Simple Mindsentitled Don't You, their contribution to theA&M Soundtrack The Breakfast Club. We arevery glad that WEA released the Matt Biancosingle More Than I Can Bear, it was always oneof our favourites on their debut album. Anothersure hit for Nik Kershaw, Wide Boy, very catchyand suitable for pop programming.

A COMPLETE DEPARTUREOne record that is very hot in the UK at themoment is Stephan Duffy's Kiss Me, it is a re-recorded version of the original single as it wasreleased two years ago under the name of Tinfin. The sound is now very much improvedand should do equally good on the continent.Roman Hoiliday's new single One Foot Back InYour Door (from the Teachers soundtrack)sounds very Americanised and is in fact acomplete departure from their earlier jive &swing style so prominent on their earlierreleases. Agneta Faltskog has a new single outcalled ( Won't Let You Go, produced by ex -10CC member Eric Stewart. The result iscommercial and bound for AOR radio,English band The Fixx were extremely popularin the States but never broke in Europe. MCAtries again with the beautiful and atmosphericballad 1 Wil) of their last Phantoms album, wellsuited for nighttime play. One record thatshould be released all over Europe is Loose

Ends' Hangin' On A String, a strong modernsounding disco record with nice percussionoverdubs and Shalamar-type of vocals (checkout the 12" version).Added to the European Airplay Top 50 thisweek is first of all the Austrian group Opus, their single Live is Life is one of Austria's bestplayed singles and is now getting heavy airplayin Germany as well. The single has a very live-ish atmosphere and does remind us of ArtCompany's hit of last year Sussana. Anotherhot radio add is Let's Talk About Me by theAlan Parsons Project which is closely followedby yet another Austrian band Relax (EinWeisses Blatt'l Papier).

A NEW NO. 1Other records that are new to the EuropeanAirplay include Bronski Beat's VVhy (due toheavy play in France), Alison Moyet and Eddy &The Soul Band with their rendition of IsaacHayes' Theme From "Shaft".Brand new on the market is the GeffenSoundtrack Vision Quest. Quite a commercialrelease with tracks from Journey, John Waite,The Style Council and two new tracks fromMadonna (Gambler and Crazy For You).Their is a new no. 1 in the European Top 100Singles, due to (a rather late) entry in the UKand France and movement in Germany; PhilipBailey jumps up from 18 to no. 1 l Other fastmovers include Commodores, Mick Jagger,Elaine Page & Barbara Dickson (new inGermany this week), King and Madonna (withGermany yet to come, the single willundoubtedly move up further). Most importantnew entries this week include Midnight Star( the second Solar act breaking in Europe?),*

ABOUT THE CHARTS__THE EUROPEAN TOP 100 (SINGLES/ALBUMS);fr many European countries one chart is recognised by the

-dostry as the " OFFICIAL" hitparade and is therefore-he compilation of the EUROPEAN TOP100. However

i-F caner countries where various charts are in existencehen equally important. For these countries we have- -c a number of these charts into one representing the

alarket.Ear -:-a-, position for every country then receives, relevant totha._ = E 1-1, an equal points rating which is in turn multipliedby a factor determined through the latest known salespercentage of total singles (or album) sales which that countryFolds n retelaan to the rest of Europe. There are differentpercentages for sing les and albums. These figures are kindlyprovided co a newer Kakis by the industry -organisations suchas IPPI-BP1-Gallup-Deutsche Phonoverband etc. For theEUROPEAN TOP 100 SINGLES 25 charts are used from 16countries, for the EUROPEAN TOP 100 ALBUMS 20 chartsare used from 15 cow dries. Since the sales percentages of afew countries are too small to get their hits into theEUROPEAN TOP 100 (provided these records are not chartedin any other territory), we are also printing a TOP 3 IN EUROPEfist each week. The EUROPEAN AIRPLAY TOP 50 is compiled through all ourcorrespondents tips received this week.r)Recorris of the weekrecess extra points. GERMANY ...SUPPLIER OF A CONTINUOUS

FLOW OF INTERNATIONAL HITSThis is already the third of a series of articles around European markets and its artists that could haveimpact outside their own country. November 1984 saw the first article completely dedicated toContinental European Cross -Over Artists. I ast week EUROTIPSHEET had a special on new EnglishArtists and in this (Basic) issue we will take a closer look at the history of the German (pop)product andwe will combine this with some spotlights on current international German stars. Later on this yearmore specials are to be expected on other European markets as well and one more on Germany isscheduled late '85.

Germany is without any doubt the majormarket on the continent responsible for quite acontinuous flow of international hits. It standsahead of England with regards to the yearlyamount of album sales in Europe and is thirdbest on singles. Not only is the Germanaudience more willing than ever to hear Englishlanguage music, but the climate for localproduct to chart elsewhere has seen animprovement over the last 3 to 4 years. On topof this, even local products sang in the Germanlanguage were able to make impact in Europeand even in the US and Australia. And although the German chart is still filledwith international products, the last two yearssurveys seem to indicate that the Germanaudiences are taking a stand in favour of theirown local products (see also the figures onpage 6).

UNWILLINGNESSDue to the unwillingness of the Germanaudience to hear English language music, many American and British acts recordedGerman language versions of their songs. inthe Fifties, people like Conny Francis andWenda Jackson tried their own brand ofGerman. Little Peggy March was even sosuccessful that she decided to move and livein Germany. And even the Beatles recordedsome of their earlier tunes in German.During their stay in Germany in the early 60's,when the Beatles played the Star Club inHamburg, they inspired numerous Germangroups to write their own material. Amongthem were The Rattles, winners of a contest atthe Star Club in 1963, who had their first hitLalala two years later on. After supporting the

Beatles on their German tour, they were thefirst German band that toured England.Together with the Lords they were the best-known German group during the Sixties.

COSMOS SYNTHESIZER MUSICBy the end of the Sixties, the German musicscene was gradually developing. Influenced byAmerican underground, groups like Kraftwerkand Can (Dusseldorf), Ash Ra Temple,Tangerine Dream and Amon Duul (with KlausSchulze on drums) started to create their ownmusic; often referred to as 'cosmossynthesiser music'.After leaving Amon Duul in the early 70's, ClausSchulze started a career as a synthesiserplayer. He was quite successful, but by 1975the interest in his rather monotonous 'wall-to-wall music' and almost faded. On the whole, one can say that in the first halfof the Seventies many bands (Embryo, CuruCuru, Kraan, Grobschnitt, Novalis) played asymphonic kind of music, known abroad asKrautrock. But of course there were someexceptions. Some bands stuck to their British

Herbert Groenemeyer- EM!EMI's no 1 singer: Artist of the year 1984, bestalbum 1984 (according to the official analysisby Germany's leading trade magazine,Musikmarkt), 38 weeks in the official Top 10charts: Herbert Groenemeyer, the 29 year -oldactor and singer, is unquestionably theshooting star of 1984. No other German orinternational star sold so many records as hedid during this period of time. The 1p is called4630 Bochum, named after his home town, inthe industrial mining heart of West Germany. His songs, however, go well beyond asentimental, and at the same time, criticalappraisal of the town with which he is nowunmistakebly, identified, warning his audienceof the dangers of living a life in a comfortable,

uncritical cocoon. In his hit single Maenner(Men) he throws the old cliche aboutmasculinity at his listeners, makes themreconsider these autocratic attitudes. His career as an actor got off to a good start asone of the characters (lieutenant Werner) inthe world-famous motion picture (now also asuccessful full-lenght tv film) Das Boot (TheBoat). 1984 saw him sweep through Germanyon one of the most successful rock tours ofthat year. A star is born...it is no exaggerationand there is no doubt that we are going to behearing a lot more from this young man.Other important EMI releases include: KlausLage Band (album Schweissperten); WolfMaahn (album Irgendwo In Deutschland) andBap (album Zwesche Saizjebaeck Un Bier).

and American examples; among them Frumpywith the excellent female singer Inge Rumpf.By the mid Seventies, at a low tide of theGerman music scene, a new phenomenonemerged: Udo Lindenberg, a rock singer withGerman lyrics (see seperate story).

NEUE WELLEBut it was not until 1979, when the Britishpunkwave invaded Germany, that the NeueWelle was born. A new generation of young

6

musicians with entirely new values stood upagainst the Establishment (including theestablish music industry). Energy was themessage! And Nina Hagen was one ofGermans most promising products for exportwith her exciting blend of opera, rock andcontroversial lyrics. But very soon many bands tried to get rid ofthe Anglo-American musical influences anddeveloped their own German tradition. Andalthough bands like Einsturzende Neubauten

itifilif11113141

and Kowalski never made any chart impact(and never intended to do so ether) they buttup a large cult following especially throughtheir unique and shattering live sounds.

SHATTERING LIVE SOUNDSIn the late Seventies Germany was suddenly inthe center of attention if it came to produceinternational hits. Kraftwerk even hit theEnglish charts with the song Autobahn, Falcowas the first Austrian artist to cross theAtlantic, his disco dance smash Der Kommisarwas very popular in the US; Spider MurphyGang had a hit in the Benelux with Skandal ImSperrbezirk and of course Nena, Alphayille,Trio and Peter Schilling are the obviousexamples of Germany's most successfulpopstars of the Eighties. It remains to be seen if Germany can keep upits role of supplier of international hits(especially if the trend towards nationalism inmusic programming gets stronger) but acouple of promising acts are still there waitingto be picked up by the international audiences.

PO It MirNIS VI

Lido Lindenberg- OGG/PolydorOne of Polydor's leading artists is UdoLindenberg, who first appeared on the Germanscene in 1973 with Andrea Gloria. Since thenhe recorded numerous other albums such asPanische Naechte, Panische Zeite and his firstalbum on the Polydor label Odysee which wentgold 3 months after its release. In addition to this, Udo has done many highlysuccessful tours in the federal republic andinvited wet -known performers to join him onthe stage including Nina Hagen, HelenSchneider and Gianna Nannini.1983 was a major year in Udo's career, hereceived the award of the golden album forOdysee (sales over 250,000 units in WestGermany, a grant sell-out jubily concert tocelebrate 10 years of the 'Panic Orchestra'where all the above mentioned ladies joinedUdo to celebrate this special event held onWest- Berlin's famous Wald Buehne. And ftthis was not enough, Udo's wish to perform in

East Germany came through when he wasinvited to play at a peace concert in thepeople's palace of the republic of East Berlin. After so many years of recognition in his ownmarket ft seems now that Udo has a fairchange to reach beyond the German borders;this single Sonderzug Nach Pankow(Chattanooga Choochoo) was a minor hit inthe Benelux and his latest single Germans hasbeen released in the Benelux countries and willshortly be out in the UK.Apart from his musical talents, Udo is an active )member of the peace movement and a lot of .'

his music and lyrics do refer to such issues. Infact he was one of the several Germanmusicians who performed in publicrelinquishing all royalties for the Ethiopiancourse. A single entitled The Greene Mauer '

Yello - Stella- VertigoWith their 3rd album You Gotta Say Yes ToAnother Access, Yello made the final move to awider audience; this new album continues thiscommercial line and it is fascinating to hearvocalist Dieter Meier and the musical brainBoris Blank in tracks like Desire (the single),Stalakdrama and Domingo. Vicious Games isquite simple as a composition but couldproduce the same effects as their last hit I LoveYou. Some songs are mini soundtracks in theirown right and are even suitable for daily radioprogramming. Atmospheric and electronicmusic on a very high and intelligent level.

Al Corley - Square Rooms- MercuryInstead of playing the highly praised role asSteven Carrington, the tormented son of an oilbaron, Al Corley left the 'Dynasty' clan twoyears ago and took up the challenge to recorda contemporary pop album. His single SquareRooms was a minor hit in some Europeancountries (still no. 2 in France) and the follow-up Over Me is his next try. And although Corleyis not a German artist in the true sense of theword, he was signed directly to PhonogramGermany and is therefore regarded by us as alocal German artist with lots and lots ofpotential to chart on the continent.

Tom Petting Und Die Silhouetten- Echo DerLiebe- Schallten/AriolaTom Petting is one of Austria's leading rockjournalists and also presenter of a dailymidnight show on the Austrian NationalChannel OE 3. People that are willing to gobeyond the treshold of the German lyrics couldenjoy tracks like Ein Stueck Von Himmel, EchoDer Liebe and Ich Und Du where Pettingshows himself to be a lover of romantic poptunes. And although the production could bemore adventurous and tends to beanonymous in the long run, this albumdeserves to be heard outside of the Austrianmarket.
