El Semanario Edison Language Academy – Together Through Two Languages (310) 828-0335 www.edison.smmusd.org FROM THE PRINCIPALS DESK: A CULTURE OF GIVING DECEMBER 5-9,2016 ANNOUNCEMENTS This week I sent a telephone message to all Edison families, telling you about Giving Tuesday and requesting that you consider donating to the Santa Monica Malibu Education Foundation. Many thanks to those of you who e-mailed and called me asking if I would prefer that Edison families donate to the Ed Foundation or the Edison PTA. The answer is BOTH PLEASE! In whatever amount you can afford, please consider giving to both because they help our students in different ways. You see the direct results of PTA funding at our school when: You drop your children off at school in the morning and see Ofelia, Alex, Israel, or Sergio keeping our children safe in the drop off zones. Or before school when you see Vicky overseeing students and parents playing board games or Virgil watching over them in the courtyard . They are there because of the PTA. Your child’s class goes on a field trip to a museum, concert, university etc. We are able to offer field trips because of the PTA. Your child talks about an exciting assembly about science, dance, music, animals, etc. The performers and artists are there because of the PTA. Your child’s teacher adds books to his/her classroom library that address a particular literature genre or reading level, or buys art supplies for projects. They can do that because they get extra materials money from the PTA. AND you’ll see the resources that the Ed Foundation provides us when: You see our nine bilingual instructional assistants -- Juana Stucchi, Emma Casillas, Laura Graciano, Geralyn Goodman, Johanna Brown, Michael Pérez, Naelli Gutierrez, Alexandra Brandoli, and Vicky Valadez working with students. They lead small groups, provide 1:1 tutoring to targeted students, and support our intensive intervention programs – all with support from the Ed Foundation. You attend concerts, plays and art exhibitions and see the results of your child’s weekly theater, art, music classes and/or choir in Spanish. Martha Ramirez- Oropeza of PS Arts and Music Teacher Jacqueline Fuentes can work with our students because of the Ed Foundation. Your child logs on to Kid Biz or Brainology, works with special reading intervention curriculum or leveled books, or has sports equipment at recess and physical education. These are all made possible by the Ed Foundation. Each of the above greatly enriches our children’s lives and education. I give to both the PTA and the Ed Foundation because I’m personally committed to our students and believe they do so much better in school with these supports and enrichment offerings. Please join me, in whatever amount you can afford, in making your tax- deductible donation to both the Education Foundation and the Edison PTA before the end of the year. Our children are worth the investment! PARENT CHORUS -- Come and lift your voice in song – in Spanish and English! Meet some other Edison families and learn more about the cultures of the Americas by learning some great love songs in Spanish and English! No expertise necessary! Fridays from 8:30- 9:30 am through February 17. Meet in Room 109. FAMILY ART NIGHT - December 15 at 6:00 pm Edison is hosting a family potluck and evening of making art together. Our partners at PS Arts will be leading this experience. They’ll bring the artist and the art supplies. We’ll bring our families and potluck dish to share (to feed about 10 people). Please join us for some fellowship before the holidays! PTA will provide plates/utensils and something to drink! SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH FOCUS AND ATTENTION CHALLENGES Bobby Verdugo of the UCLA School Function Project will be repeating this well- attended parent workshop (offered last week in the morning) on December7 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in Room 100. ANUNCIOS

Emma Casillas, Laura Graciano, Geralyn Goodman, Johanna Brown, Michael Pérez, Naelli Gutierrez, Alexandra Brandoli, and Vicky Valadez trabajando con estudiantes.

HARVEST OF THE MONTH

Sweet potatoes

Instead of potato chips, peel and slice raw sweet potatoes and serve with fat free dip for a healthy snack

Dip strips of sweet potatoes in egg, substitute and bake lightly oiled pan at 425 F for 25-30 minutes to make sweet potatoes fries.

Baked sliced sweet potatoes with apples and cinnamon for a hot dessert.

Produce Tips

Choose firm, dark, dry and smooth bruises, sprouts or moldy spots. One decayed spot can make the entire sweet potato tasted bad, even when

cut away.

Do not was sweet potatoes until you are ready to cook them

Do not store sweet potatoes in the refrigerator. To keep, fresh, store in a dry, cool place, like a pantry or garage.

At room temperature sweet potatoes should be used within one week. If stored properly, sweet potatoes can keep for one month longer.
