Many of us lead fast and busy lives. Computers, cell phones, and other tools make
our lives easier, but we’re still under a lot of stress. To help cope with the pressure,
people are turning to an ancient practice, yoga. It can improve one’s health and lead to a
sense of inner peace.
Yoga means “union.” Its goal is to bring the body, mind, and spirit into harmony.
The practice began in India a very long time ago. It was first written about more than
2,000 years ago in an important book, the Bhagavad Gita. Over time, many branches of
yoga were developed. In modern India, the most popular branch is Bhakti Yoga. Like
other types of yoga, it is closely connected to the Hindu religion.
Outside of India, many people, no matter what their religion is, have taken up
yoga. The Hatha style attracts people who want to exercise. People sit and stand in
different poses, called “asanas.” Some are very simple. Others take years of study to
master. In Hatha Yoga, attention is placed on breathing practices, called “pranayama,”
and on meditation*.
Yoga has a long list of benefits. It improves physical strength, raises energy levels,
and makes a person more flexible. On top of that, yoga can help with problems like back
pain, and it can even help someone lose weight. What’s more, yoga can lower one’s stress
level and lead to a greater sense of calm.
With all these benefits, it’s no wonder there are yoga classes in so many countries.
Some new styles have even been developed outside of India. As we push into the 21st
century, we will surely discover many incredible new things. It’s interesting that we can
still learn so much from an ancient practice like yoga.

次の英文を読み,問い(問 1 〜 ₅ )について,それぞれ 〜 から最も適当なもの
を一つ選び,解答を 〜 に入れなさい。 (20点)
Many countries are going through an important population shift. People are having
fewer children, and lifespans are getting longer. The result is an average population age
that keeps going up. The situation is creating serious problems.
Low fertility rates* are the first key to the aging population issue. In most
developed countries, the rate has fallen over the last 50 years. For example, in Japan, it
went from 2.00 in 1960 to 1.41 in 2012. Taiwan’s rate fell from around 5.00 in 1960 to
1.27 in 2012. These numbers are above their all-time lows. However, a country needs a
fertility rate of 2.10 to keep its population stable.
Longer lifespans are the second key. With better healthcare and nutrition, we’re
living longer than ever. For example, in 2012 the average lifespan in Brazil was 77 years
for women and 70 for men. In Egypt, the average that same year was 73 for women and
69 for men. These numbers are climbing and could reach 100 in the coming decades.
Living longer is great, but it leads to some problems. After people retire, they
collect pensions, and their healthcare costs go up. Much of the burden for paying these
costs falls on the current workforce. Yet as the workforce gets smaller (due to lower
fertility rates), less tax money is collected. The situation puts heavy pressure on
companies and governments.
To make up for these losses, some governments are encouraging people to have
more children. Also, robots are being built to work in offices and provide healthcare.
Finally, through immigration, countries like England and the U.S.A. are adding to their
workforce.
Some countries are in a rush to find answers. In Japan, about 25% of the
population is 65 or older. That will likely climb to over 30% by 2030. Other countries,
like Germany and Italy, are facing similar situations. Time will tell which methods can
successfully deal with our aging populations.

Egypt?
Men in Brazil seem to live longer than women in Egypt.
Women seem to live longer than men in neither country.
They seem to be continuing to climb.
They will reach 100 in a few years in both countries.
問 ₃ According to this passage, one of the problems when people live longer is

people still working have to find their jobs overseas
governments have to abolish their pension systems
companies and governments have to bear more burdens
問 4 According to this passage, what kinds of measures are countries taking to cope
with their losses?
