Five million inhabitants/consumers, and a significant vocation for export. Sicily is Italy’s largest region and the fourth for number of residents. With an 86.7 billion euro

GDP in 2014 and a 17.031 pro capita GDP, it is one of the most interesting marketplaces in Italy, also due to its stra-tegic position at the centre of the Mediterranean and to its close relations with foreign markets. Sicily’s economy hinges upon the service sector, genera-ting over 80% of GDP and about half of the island’s total consumption. According to Banca d’Italia, the island’s ad-ded value is distributed as follows: 13.7% comes from com-merce, 19.9% from real estate; 14.1% from the industrial sector, and 3.8% from agriculture. Tourism is also signi-ficant, as 4.1% of tertiary sector’s added value comes from

lodging and restaurant industry. Outstanding investments are also being made in the ener-gy industry: in recent decades Sicily has rediscovered its vo-cation for renewable energy, in wind farms and solar energy plants. This has been a fast-growing sector over the last few years, reaching peaks of 1400 megawatt of solar energy and 1.000 of wind energy, enough to satisy all of Sicily’s internal de-mand as well as 7% of national needs. As for international trade, the agriculture and food industry are particularly noteworthy: total exports in this sector were in excess of 1 billion euros in 2015. Chemical production is also im-

portant, with exports for 925 million euros in the same year, as well as electronic and electrical machinery, which over the last five years have managed to double their exports.

Four large airports and two smaller ones. A natural view over the sea. And, most importantly, a strategic position right at

the heart of a crucial area for the expansion of the European economy. Sicily has the geographical advantage of being the

most structured landing place for all routes joining Europe and the Mediterranean, a sea where 20% of the world’s maritime

traffic passes. This percentage is likely to increase, with the on-going widening of the Suez Canal and the evolution in worldwide

shipping strategies.Moreover, the International Monetary Fund’s April 2015 data for

World Economic Outlook show that the difference in GDP growth rate between Italy, France and Spain (the “rich and mature” part of

Europe) and the countries on the South and East shores amounts to 3/3.5, even 4 times in some cases. It is hence only naural that Italy should seize the opportunities this position offers: making investments in Sicily means being right at the centre of “the productive and eco-nomic potential that Italy and its South has right opposite”, to quote the Italian Ministry of Infrastructures and Transport’s Strategic Plan For Harbours and Logistics.This plan gives great importance to ro-ro energy traffic, mainly coming from Augusta, but which also counts on national and international coastal navigation. The most accessible marketplaces from Sicily are Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco to the South, and Egypt, Israel and especially Tur-key to the East. Commercial traffic is the first to benefit from this special position and will certainly increase exponentially.

whose potential lies precisely in its strategic position. Sicily has two main port hubs: Pozzallo-Catania -Augusta and Palermo - Trapani,

the latter has the diamond point of the Termini Imerese interport. The island also has six airports: The main ones are in Palermo, Catania and

Trapani, there is a growing one in Comiso as well as the two smaller ai-rports of Lampedusa and Pantelleria.

The Pozzallo-Catania-Augusta area, mainly used by cargo ship traffic, boasts a well-equipped loading area (loading dock) and is only a short distance from

the large interport at Catania Bicocca. Work is in progress for contruction of a container terminal, and the commercial port is about to be expanded.

The area also has the advantage of the two nearby airports: Catania-Fontanarossa, used by almost 7.5 million passengers in 2015, and Co-

miso, created with the specific aim of reducing low-cost traffic at Catania and dealing with cargo transfers.

Sicily’s other logistic hub also benefits from two airports. Paler-mo Falcone Borsellino airport (5 million passengers in 2015)

and Trapani-Birgi airport (1.5 million check-ins in 2015) are not far from the ports of Palermo, Trapani and Termini

Imerese (the latter especially adapted to RO-RO traffic and with an interport too). All this potential will grow

even further, since infrastructure development is an important entry in the 2014-2020 European

Regional Development Fund. The Messina-Ca-tania-Palermo railway and improvements to

the Sicilian interport network are amongst the biggest upcoming projects.

AAA Investors wanted. The European strategy to promote Sicily dedicates 372 million euros to the enhancement of cultural assets, with the Unesco’s World Heritage sites le-ading the list. Sicily is home to seven of these gems: the Roman Villa del Casale in Piaz-za Armerina, Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples, the Aeolian Islands, the late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, Syracuse and the Pantalica Necropolis, Mount Etna and the Arab-Norman itinerary which includes Palermo, Cefalù and Monreale.

modation structures welcomed 14.320.000 guests in 2014 – and the figures are expected to increase. The province of Messina, with Taormina and the

Aeolian Islands, attracts most tourists (3.2 million visitors), followed by Pa-lermo, the state capital and treasure chest of Arab and Norman culture in

Sicily (almost 2.5 million visitors).1.353 hotels, 4.1% of Italy’s total, are located in Sicily. Tourism is undoubtedly

one of the leading sectors of the island’s economy, employing more than 100.000 people and with a turnover 3.2 billion euros. The visitors come prin-

cipally from France (19.4%) and Germany (14.8%), but many also come from Africa, America, Asia and Oceania. In fact, 30% of the visitors are from outside

Europe, mainly from the U.S.A. (7%), Australia (2%) and Argentinia (1,6%). In Si-cily they are looking for a unique experience of well-being, culture and excellent

food and wine.Sicily’s numerous cultural and naturalistic attractions mean that tourism can offer

varied and lively experiences all year round. Over the last five years, luxury tourism has grown twice as fast as traditional tourism. Indeed, luxury vacations have grown

by 10%, which shows that Sicily is becoming a more and more exclusive destination.

Olive oil, wine, fish. Citrus fruits, patisserie, chocolate, cheese and dozens of other products. If you imagine Sicily, you’ll im-

mediately think of tuna fish and seafood, the scent of oranges, the ruby-red wine and the unique taste of cannoli and cassa-

ta, the most famous Sicilian desserts. And your imagination is right, for quality food farming has always been one of the

strong points of the Sicilian economy, as the figures show: in 2015 exports from Sicilian agriculture, forestry and fishing total-

led 527 million euros, followed by the exports of food products, beverages and tobacco for 506 million euros. Together, the two

sectors made up about a third of Sicily’s total exports, with a 6.5% growth rate compared to the previous year, deriving especially from products like bread, pasta, desserts, wine, beer, meat and

cold cuts, cheese, fish and preserves. These are the most widely available products on the international

market, but Sicily has plenty more to offer: the traditional chocolate of Modica, in the province of Ragusa, the only one in Europe made

with the original “a freddo” method used by the Aztecs, or of its re-nowned prickly pears, whose quality is guaranteed by two Protected

Designation of Origin (DOP) labels.“Made in Sicily” products have a special attraction for non-Europe-

inveSt in “Sicily”the right place for your buSineSSThere are 185 all over Italy. And 24 of them are in Sicily. A few months ago the State Property Office

launched “Invest in Italy”, a striking plan aimed at attracting investors: castles, ancient lighthouses, monasteries and vast strategic areas are made available for people wishing to give life to theirbusiness

idea. The list – which can be consulted at www.investinitalyrealestate.com - includes the castle in Bronte which bears the name and was the residence of Horatio Nelson, the hero of the battle of

Trafalgar and was built starting in 1100 on the ruins of the Maria Santissima abbey. The manor house is available for “transformation into tourist accommodation ” with a long- term license.

The space is huge: 4.875 square metres on two storeys. The duration of the license will depend on the investors’ proposal.

Another little gem on the list is the ex-convent of the Reformed Church in Petralia Sotta-na (Palermo). The building consists of 2.800 covered square metres, including the former

church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, and also has an outdoor area with tennis courts, a stonework theatre and a pizzeria with dancefloor. Five lighthouses are also available.

The Ministry of Defence is offering the structures of Acireale (a 412 square metre bu-ilding with a 4.000 square metre adjacent lot), Punta Libeccio in Marettimo (650

square metres indoor and 800 outdoor), Capo Milazzo (282 square metres indoor and 1.000 outdoor), Punta Spadillo in Pantelleria (290 square metres indoor

and 1000 outdoor), and Capo Faro in Salina (a 370 square metre building sur-rounded by a 5000 square metre lot). There are many other sites on the list,

which is getting longer month by month.

Sicily is a key region for photovoltaic energy, and the fourth in Italy for wind power. Its renewable energy sources are not only sufficient to cover the region’s domestic demand, but according to the National Re-search Council (CNR), they can also produce an equal

amount of energy for export purposes.Over the last few years, Sicily has invested generously in electricity production: at present, wind power provides 2.9 billion kWh, while 2.1 billion come from photovoltaic or hydroelectric power stations, and 15 billion from ther-moelectric ones. The energy sector in Sicily is definitely a good one for lar-ge investments, that will bring in Sicily works for several

billion euros. After all, Sicily’s distinguishing geographical features – it is an island at the centre of the Mediterranean where resources like wind and sunlight remain untouched by any kind of economic crisis – make it a natural platform for alternative energy. This does not mean there is a lack of fossil sources on the island: indeed, Sicily is also the second region in Italy for hydrocarbon extraction, which further encourages in-

vestments in this field.

There are 241 business networks in Sicily. With 91 perma-nent connections, Catania is the most active province in this regard, followed by Ragusa (42), Palermo (28), Cal-tanissetta (18), Trapani and Syracuse (17), Messina (11), Agrigento (10) and Enna (7). Manufacturing companies are the most network-friendly, generally establishing connections to enhance innovation (64%) or reach foreign markets (59%). And the field is expan-ding: RetImprese Confindustria says that business networks in Sicily have a much greater potential. An excellent example of Sicilian enterprise networks is the Polo Rete industriale Meccatronica Sicilia, promoted by Sicindu-stria together with the mechatronics production district and the Consorzio Sustainable Island.The project brings together various entities, such as innovation companies and start-ups, research organizations and servi-ce centres for technological development and promotion of technology transfer. Its main objective is growth of all the part-ner companies.The ultimate goal of business networking is to increase compe-titiveness. The associated companies are not necessarily in same field of production: 84% of Sicily’s networks are made up of en-terprises coming from at least two different sectors, which means they can broaden their offer, work together to access tax benefits, and transfer personnel from one company to another, enhancing flexibility as well as competitiveness.Business networks in Sicily offer an incomparable growth oppor-tunity. Four and a half billion euros. That is the sum allocated for Sicily’s development. The operational indications of the

2014-2020 European Regional Development Fund (Erdf ) mean that there will soon be a large influx of resources to

the island. Specifically, 4,557 billion euros mostly from the European Union, with the aim of improving competitiveness

in the island’s economic system, enhancing its cultural as-sets, increasing environmental sustainability, strengthening countercyclical measures and generally improving the qua-

lity of life.There are ample funds for development, starting from techno-

logical innovation: 342 million euros are specifically dedicated to “research, technological development and innovation”, while 256 million will be used for creating new digital infrastructures

and supporting e-commerce. Larger funds have been allocated for small and medium-size companies, agriculture and fishing

activities: 500 million will be used to internationalize existing en-terprises, create business networks and reinforce startups. The list also includes 600 million for protection of the environment, 850

for sustainable energy, and over half a billion for other uses, such as making the port and airport system more competitive and en-

couraging investment in connections between the internal areas of Sicily and global transport network. Amongst other items, worthy of mention is the 370 million fund for the restoration and enhance-

ment of cultural and naturalistic assets.In other words, Europe is calling the world. By making a large amount

of money available for investments in Sicily and by giving the oppor-tunity of being based on the island and to create joint ventures and

productive partnerships.
