Foreword

“Time to deliver”. This is the motto of the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which will also be our driving force in Beijing.

With this concert, we aim to highlight the richness of Europe’s culture and the positive way in which it can interact with China – including in the classical music sphere. An example of the importance of dialogue and an illustration of what cooperation in areas of mutual interest can bring.

The Artists

Du Xuan

Concertmaster of Symphony Orchestra of National Opera House of China

Du Xuan was born into a musician's family in China, studied violin from the age of ten, two years later he gave his first public performance in junior competition as a finalist and after six years of study he was a finalist in the National violin competition in Shanghai.

In 1998, from Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, his string quartet was invited to Portugal by the ‘Fundacao Oriente’ and soon after he won the assistant concertmaster position in the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa and teaching at the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra. In the same year he joined the Moscow Piano Quartet which came from Moscow residences in the Culture Centre of Cascais and he remained with them for five years whilst continuing his part-time study with Prof Yfrah Neaman in London. In 2001 xuan was finalist in George Enescu international violin competition.

In 2006, Du Xuan was appointed as principal concertmaster of Orquestra Sinfonica Portuguesa in Teatro Nacional São Carlos in Lisbon, Portugal.

The following years Xuan was also invited as guest concertmaster for other major orchestras in Europe: Royal Seville Symphony Orchestra, Porto National Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Tampere Philharmonic etc.

In 2011 Du Xuan moved to London and has been offered work with many of the major orchestras including the London Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic, Northern Sinfonia and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra often as guest or co-

leader. During 18 years in Europe, Du Xuan has performed as soloist with orchestras and as chamber musician in many festivals giving recitals in Germany, Denmark, France, Spain, Portugal and UK etc.

Since 2014, Du Xuan has been working as the concertmaster of symphony orchestra of National Opera house of China in Beijing.

中国音乐学院附中乐队课指导，南京师范大学客座教授等等教育领域的工作。于

2020 年成立的林耀基教学法推广组委员会诚邀杜玄为林耀基教学法推广组委会

宣 讲 导 师 。

杜玄出生于南京，早年曾就读于南京艺术学院音乐系附中师从王登云郭国光教授

，之后中央音乐学院师从林耀基教授，又赴英国师从著名小提琴教育家尼曼教授

，并在罗马尼亚举行的埃内斯库小提琴国际比赛中获奖。作为青年独奏家他曾出

现在西班牙卡萨尔斯国际音乐节、德国魏玛夏季音乐节、西班牙伊比利亚音乐节

、葡萄牙白色城堡音乐节、丹麦豪森国际音乐节等欧洲各地的音乐节上。他也曾

是著名的莫斯科钢琴四重奏组的成员。杜玄作为乐团首席独奏家经历合作的著名

音乐家包括大提琴家马友友、小提琴家 Pinchas Zukerman、Midori Goto、长笛

演奏家 Galway、钢琴家 Stephen Hough 等。

Wu Xiaofeng

XIAOFENG WU ‘s piano performances in the US and Europe have been highly recognized by music critics, numerous publications including ABC, YAHOO, Radio Clasica, Pravda, Politica, OpusMusica, El Mundo and many others. Along with his recent performances at the Jiangsu Centre of the Performing Arts (a.k.a JSCPA), Poly -Theatre series, Shanghai Concert Hall, Hongkong Great Hall and many, Xiaofeng Wu has been recognized as one of the most reputable pianists of his generation.

As a soloist and pedagogue, Xiaofeng is on the jury panel of the Premio Int’l Pianistico “A.Scriabin” (2020), WCM Int’l Piano Competition (2019, 2020) and Hong Kong - Asia Int’l piano competition, etc. He was also invited to many professional events such as New York Int’l Piano Competition & Winter Festival 2020, Maccagno Piano Days Int’l Festival(2017,2018), Xiamen Int’l Piano Festival (2016), Ningbo Int’l Piano Festival (2018). He His film recordings of performance and tutorials of classic solo repertoire are available at Tido® Piano Masterworks Series released by Edition Peters, London. The Chopin Project® has commissioned him for his recording of Chopin’s substantial repertoire for online stream cast.

Xiaofeng drew international attention when he performed at the Beijing APEC conference for the leaderships of many countries. He is also the recipient of 1st Prize of the 10th Guerrero Foundation Int’l Piano Competition (Madrid), 1st Prize of the Society of American Musicians Piano Competition (Chicago), the Mabel Henderson Memorial Prize, and academically, the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan. Currently Xiaofeng Wu is an elite piano faculty of Pädagogische Universität Nanjing, School of Music. He is also the founder of Chaconne Chamber Ensemble and The Wu Artists Promotions and Institute HK. In 2020, Xiaofeng Wu was appointed the Artistic Director of the Asian Pianists Association.

任 2020 年斯克里亚宾国际钢琴比赛评委、意大利玛卡尼欧 Maccagno 国际钢琴艺

术节（2018，2017）评审专家和独奏家，英国伦敦音乐节（2020）、爱尔兰 WCM

国际钢琴比赛暨艺术节（2019, 2020）评委和专家；应邀出席并出演于厦门国际

钢琴艺术节、宁波国际钢琴艺术节，香港-亚太等钢琴大赛总决赛评委等。江苏

教育频道邀请武晓锋主持《艺术之窗》钢琴专题系列的演奏和讲解。

归国任教以来，武晓锋培养了一批钢琴后备人才，有多人获得全额或高额奖学金

赴美国伊斯曼、曼尼斯、曼哈顿音乐学院、克利夫兰音乐学院、新英格兰音乐学

院、亚利桑那州立大学等国外高校深造，并多次获得国际、全国性及省级钢琴比

赛奖项。

作为一个学者型钢琴家，武晓锋博士曾应邀为殷承宗、Mischa Maisky 及 Cyprien

Katsaris 等国际音乐大师专访并撰写乐评并收录在《音乐爱好者》等各类杂志刊

物上；应邀出席首届中央音乐学院音乐表演研究学术研讨会，全程介绍并翻译肖

邦国际比赛评委、剑桥大学教授 John Rink 的新评注版肖邦作品集在中央音乐学

院的首发式，并积极推动德国 HENLE，奥地利 Wiener Urtext和英国 Peters等权

威原作版乐谱的引进。

Wang Shuyi

Ms. Wang began her cello studies at the age of 5 with her father, who is a renowned pianist in China. She attended the the Affiliated High School of China Conservatory of Music in Beijing, followed by an undergraduate degree from the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where she studied under Prof. Quan, Rushi and Prof. Yu, Mingqing. Ms. Wang attended her graduate study at Southern Methodist University in Dallas with full scholarship, where she studied under Prof. Nathaniel Rosen, Prof. Tim Eddy, and Prof. Andres Diaz. She received her Artist’s certificate with the highest performance ability.

Her first solo performance was at the music hall of China Central Conservatory of Music in June of 2007, getting top acclaims. She also performed solo at the music hall in Harbin in 2010, receiving great reviews from many media outlets including the Harbin Daily, Heilongjiang Daily, and Harbin TV station. The performance was broadcasted live from FM 90.9, City Music Station of Harbin.

Ms. Wang’s performance is exquisite, rich, expressive and narrative, yet full of passion and charm inside.

Ms. Wang is currently the Principal Cello at the National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra.

新星共同演出。

2004-2006 年间在美成功举行多场独奏音乐会和多次室内乐音乐会。

2006 年末，获得音乐硕⼠学位后返回中央芭蕾舞团。

2007 年在中央音乐学院音乐厅成功举办了个人独奏音乐会；

2010 年初在哈尔滨音乐厅举行独奏音乐会，哈尔滨音乐广播电台对音乐会进行了

全程直播，当地各大主要电视媒体对音乐会进行了报导。

近年来在昆明、西安、沈阳等城市，中国音乐学院、中央⺠族大学、北京化工大

学等院校也举办了个人独奏音乐会和室内乐音乐会；在美国达拉斯的⻉多芬音乐

节上与达拉斯交响乐团

的音乐家演出室内乐作品；以及代表中国被邀请参加韩国首尔亚洲大提琴艺术节

The composers

Johannes Brahms, (born May 7, 1833, Hamburg —died April 3, 1897, Vienna), German composer and pianist of the Romantic period, who wrote symphonies, concerti, chamber music, piano works, choral compositions, and more than 200 songs. Brahms was the great master of symphonic and sonata style in the second half of the 19th century. He can be viewed as the protagonist of the Classical tradition of Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven in a period when the standards of this tradition were being questioned or overturned by the Romantics.

Claude Debussy, (born August 22, 1862, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France—died March 25, 1918, Paris), French composer whose works were a seminal force in the music of the 20th century. He developed a highly original system of harmony and musical structure that expressed in many respects the ideals to which the Impressionist and Symbolist painters and writers of his time aspired. His major works include Clair de lune (“Moonlight,” in Suite bergamasque, 1890–1905), Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune (1894; Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun), the opera Pelléas et Mélisande (1902), and La Mer (1905; “The Sea”).

Chen Gang (born 1935) is a Chinese composer best known for his work Butterfly Lovers' Violin Concerto. He is the son of songwriter Chen Gexin. Chen Gang started to learn piano and composition from his father and music teachers from a young age. From 1955 to 1959, Chen Gang was a student at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, studying composition. In 1959, Chen Gang, together with another student, He Zhanhao, composed the violin concerto Butterfly Lovers.

The violin concerto won five Golden Record prizes as well as a Platinum Record prize. The Concerto has also achieved enormous international success. Chen is a professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In his composition career, he composed and recomposed many classics in China, including Butterfly Lovers, Miaolin's Morning, and The Golden Steel Smelting Furnace. He also composed one of the most difficult violin solo pieces: Sun Shines in Tashkurgan.

Milko Lazar (1965 - Maribor) is a composer and multi-instrumentalist. After graduating from music high school, he studied jazz and classical piano and saxophone at the College of Music and Performing Arts in Graz (Austria) and harpsichord (baroque music) at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (Netherlands). For fifteen years, he regularly worked in the Big Band of RTV Slovenia as the first alto saxophonist and soloist, conductor and composer. During his jazz period, he worked with many of his own ensembles and with many world-famous jazz musicians. Milko Lazar has recorded more than forty LPs and CDs with various ensembles and twelve original CDs. He regularly composes for the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra and the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra. Renowned domestic and foreign ensembles throughout Europe, the United States, South America, China and Russia have performed his works. In 2005, he founded the piano duo “Gorišek Lazar” with pianist Bojan Gorišek. In addition to composing for various chamber ensembles and symphony orchestras, he also regularly creates music for films, theatres and dance and multimedia projects. Recently, he has been collaborating regularly with

renowned dancer and choreographer Edward Clug. Together they created the successful ballet “Pret-a-porter”, “Four Reasons”, which premiered on October 22, 2008 in Lisbon in collaboration with the Portuguese National Ballet and in an extended version with the ballet HNK in Zagreb on March 27, 2009. They also created the play “Pocket Concerto”, which premiered in Stuttgart at the end of April 2009. In 2010, they created the play “Watching Others” and premiered it in SNG Maribor. Among many other awards, he received the Prešeren Fund Award in 2005 and the Župančič Award for his composing work in 2010.

Luís Maria da Costa de Freitas Branco (Lisbon, 12 October 1890 – Lisbon, 27 November 1955) was a Portuguese composer, musicologist, and professor of music who played a pre-eminent part in the development of Portuguese music in the first half of the 20th century.

Luis de Freitas Branco was born into an aristocratic family who for centuries had had close ties to the royal family in Portugal. He had a cosmopolitan education, studied piano and violin beginning in childhood and began composing at a precocious age. He studied music in Berlin and Paris, where he worked with Engelbert Humperdinck and other composers. He returned to Portugal and became professor of composition starting in 1916 at the Lisbon Conservatory of Music, where he became a leading force in restructuring musical education. There he taught, among many others, Joly Braga Santos.

During the 1930s he increasingly encountered political difficulties with the authorities and was finally forced into retirement from his official duties in 1939. He continued to compose, however, and to pursue his research into Portuguese early music, publishing several books and numerous articles.
