What a whirlwind season we have had so far. Three sold out crically ac-

claimed shows. And, for 2018, it's only going to get be"er.

Our subscripon base is now up to 2,550, and that means we connual-

ly work hard to offer shows that please our Jewel Box family. We are al-

ready working on the 61st season.

Our naonal playwring compeon is sll receiving entries through

January. Started in 1986, we have had over 12 world premieres from

previous winners, and several plays were added to naonal play cata-

logues. Audiences look forward to an original work. Every author who

has won has flown/driven to the Jewel Box for opening night. We have

been very lucky.

The nuns are ready to take the stage for a madcap run in Nunsense II:

The Second Coming. Be sure and call early. We do sell out!

Jewel Box Theatre ~ connuing excellence for 60 years.

HELP US HELP YOU HELP A WAITING LIST

How would you like to show up at the Jewel Box, give your name, and have us tell you we forgot to put your name on the list?

We are having a difficult time with patrons forgetting to call and cancel. During Plaid Tidings, over 200 patrons did not call, resulting in:

A. Not being able to call the long wait list

B. Empty seats

C. Your missing a great show

We know things come up. The box office is open until 7 pm for night shows and 1:30 pm on Sunday. To show up and tell us some of your party or friends will not be attending and we can sell the tickets, does us little good. It only takes a minute to call.

Many of you are very good about cancelling, and we appreciate that. (Not to mention the lucky wait list people who get a call)

movies has become.....there is something tangible that connects us

directly with the actors in a stellar live production. We can almost

reach out and touch the joy and sorrows that they encounter before

us on the stage, and ultimately, we often realize that we are being giv-

We walk away refreshed, affirmed, or ready to make a change. It is

that human connection that makes the difference.

There have been a multitude of productions on stage and screen depicting nuns. Perhaps the most well known is ‘The Sound of Music’, the be-loved musical depicting the life story of Maria Von Trapp. Both a successful Broadway musical and movie musical, it remains on the top of many folks favorite lists. In the comedic vein, there is ‘Sister Act’. First a blockbuster movie, the script was then adapted to a successful stage musical. It follows the story of Delores Van Cartier, a mob-ster’s singer girlfriend who must hide in a convent to protect her life. In a serious vein, and not a musical, is ‘Doubt’. The heavy subject matter can make for tour-de-force performances, albeit sometimes an uncomfortable experience. On the fantasy side, we have the television series ‘The Flying Nun’. While remembered fondly, it’s probably best known for being that Sally Field TV series! And, yes, she really did portray a flying nun! Probably one of this editor’s favorites is ‘The Bells of St. Mary’s’ starring Bing Crosby and Ingrid Bergman. The story is uplifting and Ingrid Bergman’s portrayal of Sister Mary Benedict is both tough and heartwarming. It’s a perennial holiday favorite for good rea-son. ‘The Singing Nun’ starring Debbie Reynolds is often overlooked. While it maybe hasn’t aged well, it’s story still depicts a strong message and has some wonderful performances. It’s also based on a true story about the life of the real singing nun, Sister Ann. Perhaps you remember seeing her on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’ years ago! And in the time honored tradition (alth0ugh maybe not traditional!) of seeing nuns on stage, Jewel Box presents The Sisters of Hoboken!
