02 AMITY 2014

2014 was a year of growth and creativity for the Amity Foundation. Our development

projects and social service projects directly benefited over 600,000 people both in rural

and urban areas in 28 provinces in China. Integrated poverty reduction projects in the

rural communities encompassed health, education, cultural preservation for ethnic

minorities, environmental protection and the strengthening of farmer organizations.

In urban communities, remarkable achievements were made in raising levels of

professionalization in elder care services and in serving children with special needs.

Innovative social enterprises such as the Amity Bakery and the Amity Printing were

expanded.

Community building and capacity building

Despite the wide range in the types and scope of projects and services undertaken

by Amity, they share the common goal of community building. Amity’s projects are

community-based and this is absolutely vital in a context in which society is undergoing

rapid and disruptive changes in the process of economic growth.

Amity continued to expand its pioneering work in NGO development, providing

training to newer and grass-roots NGOs and helping them become more professional,

accountable and sustainable. Capacity building for NGOs was heightened through

more research, publications and training in areas that included governance, project

management and fundraising. At the same time, Amity has been supporting the growth

of philanthropy in Chinese society by encouraging entrepreneurs, family-owned

foundations and the general public to give to charitable causes.

feature new opportunities as well

as challenges. Major changes will

occur in all sectors of society

and the philanthropic sector will

undoubtedly face new challenges.

Despite this, we experienced major

achievements in fundraising via

the internet with a year-on-year

increase of almost 40% in online

donations. This represented more

public support and social awareness

among ordinary people. With the

slowing down of economic growth

in China, we can expect that

philanthropy in China will have

to depend on a very broad base of

public support.

We are grateful to each and every

one of our friends who supported

Amity’s work in 2014. We look

forward to an increase in support

for our work in 2015, in realizing

our philanthropic principles of

transparency, wisdom and virtue.

Amity Foundation

Breakthroughs and

internationalization

Church involvement in diaconal

work has grown considerably,

both in rural and urban areas.

Amity’s church-run projects were

implemented in 16 provinces and

autonomous regions, benefiting

more than 20,000 people. In

Jiangsu, Amity achieved a major

breakthrough in inter-faith

cooperation by holding the first

training workshop on “Religion-

based charity development” that

had around 100 representatives

from the five major religions in

China.

Amity’s emergency response to

disasters has become more timely

and effective. It took Amity staff

only 12 hours to arrive on site

when the Ludian earthquake

occurred and they were able to

accomplish needs assessment,

and the rapid procurement and

distribution of relief items in a

very short time. The Foundation

began to internationalize its

emergency responses by working

in the Philippines after Typhoon

Haiyan struck. Internationalization

of its biogas expertise was evident

in the provision of project and

technical assistance to churches in

Madagascar. Working with WATSI

in USA and Tencent Foundation,

Amity was able to launch a crowd-

funding program for medical

assistance with beneficiaries in 15

countries mainly in Africa.

We will continue to expand the

international reach of our projects.

Our education and international

exchange program served as a

platform for service and cross-

cultural dialogue, facilitating

service-learning and other

volunteering opportunities for

young adults at home and abroad.

Fundraising and the new

normal

With the recovery of the global

economy remaining slow in 2014,

China encountered its slowest

economic growth since the global

financial crisis of 2008. The

slowdown ushered in a new phase

that was quite different from the

high-speed growth pattern of

the last 20 years. This new state

of China’s economy was tagged

the “new normal” by President

Xi Jinping and is expected to

I. Project StoryGoing Green Together

Amity works with local churches to promote environmental protection

On September 28, the Amity Foundation and the church of Jiangsu Province staged a carnival in the city of Xuzhou. The carnival was well-attended.

By jointly setting up the Jiangsu Christian Charity Fund (JSCCF) in 2009, Amity and the church of Jiangsu Province worked together to promote charity efforts and raise the public’s awareness of environment protection. Since 2010 various carnivals have been organized where local churches were usually the hosts of the events. During the carnivals there were musical and dancing performances. Guests of honor gave speeches to advocate environmental approaches, such as the use of low carbon products.

At the event in Xuzhou, local partner congregations set up booths for selling second-hand clothes and other items in order to raise money

for charity and promote the idea of reusability. Various informational flyers and brochures were given out. Boards informed participants about the necessity of environment protection and the idea of "integrity

of creation". A local TV station was on-site and reported about the event. The money raised would be used for church-related projects in the local communities.

II. Program OverviewWith a work focus on the Jiangsu Christian Charity Fund (JSCCF), the Church and Social Service program had made remarkable achievements in 2014. In-depth development efforts had been made in the work of building the Amity Social Service Network, disability ministry, capacity building, sponsoring a pastor, and communication among churches. With the Church and Social Service program, 33 projects of 9 categories were implemented in 16 provinces, namely Jiangsu, Shandong, Anhui, Henan, Guangdong, Fujian, Liaoning, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Tianjin, Beijing, Guizhou, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Chongqing, and Hunan. The population of direct beneficiaries of the program is more than 20,000.

III. Achievements 1. Disability Ministry

Taking care of vulnerable groups has always been one of the missions of the churches. Focuses on enabling understanding, equality and respect for people with disabilities, our disability ministry helped them to be integrated into the church, the community and society. Working with Joni & Friends from the U.S., we implemented a wheelchair donation project, Wheelchair for the World, in Nanjing, Zhenjiang, Yangzhou and Suzhou within

Jiangsu Province. Supported by professional services of US experts, 200 people with disabilities received customized wheelchairs for free. The wheelchairs enabled them mobility and opportunities to be involved in the community.

The second Family Retreat was held in June in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu Province. Sixteen families with children suffering disabilities from Zhenjiang and Nanjing participated in the retreat. More than 60 young people volunteered to help the families. Experts from Joni & Friends and Jiangsu Disabled Persons’ Federation provided consultancy in rehabilitation, spiritual counseling and educational inspiring. The families enjoyed love, peace and joy during the retreat.

To facilitate local churches’ disability ministry, we invited US experts to run a 4-day workshop where 40 church leaders from different areas of Jiangsu Province were well informed of biblical understanding of disability ministry, medical ethics, know-how, and best practices. After the workshop, churches in Xuzhou, Zhenjiang and Wuxi launched their own disability ministry efforts.

2. Amity Social Service Network

As a flagship project supported by Jiangsu Christian Charity Fund, Amity Social Service Network enjoyed nationwide expanding membership in 2014. More than 80 church-run eldercare entities

became members of the network. The membership geographically covered 11 provinces, namely Jiangsu, Shandong, Anhui, Henan, Guangdong, Fujian, Liaoning, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Tianjin, and Beijing. In 2014, the network arranged two training workshops on management with 134 participants, one workshop on techniques and skills with 40 participants, and one international conference with 260 participating representatives. The network evaluated 34 member eldercare entities.

3. Communication among Churches

We invited the Heavenly Melody Choir from Taiwan to tour places in different provinces. Fifteen charity concerts were held in churches not only enabled the joy of singing and praising the Lord but also benefited local choirs. The Taiwan choir provided vocal training on singing skills during the tour. The charity concert tour also prompted disability ministry in churches and raised fund for Amity’s disability family retreat.

A 10-day visit to churches in Yunnan Provinces by church representatives from Jiangsu Province enabled closer connection between churches in the two provinces. Financial support from Jiangsu churches to social service efforts made by Yunnan churches increased significantly.

06 AMITY 2014

We held a seminar on church’s social service ministry, attracting 46 participants from different provinces including Jiangsu, Shandong, Shanxi, Chongqing, Yunnan, Hunan, and Guizhou. The participants were updated with know-how and best practices of project planning, project management, and fund management.

4. Other Projects

Amity Jireh Saloon was arranged to improve churches’ social service ability. The coverage of Churches’ United Action on Environmental Protection expanded from Jiangsu Province to other provinces along the Yangtze River. The project of Sponsoring A Pastor covered 180 pastors suffering poverty.

Community Development, Disaster Management, Environmental Protection, HIV/AIDS Prevention and Public Health

I. Project StoriesWe Are One

On the afternoon of August 3rd, Guo Taiquan, working away home in Kunming, got the news that the earthquake took place in his hometown, Ludian, Yunnan Province. In the evening, he and his brother Guo Taijiang hurried back to their home in Huodehong Village, Huodehong Township, one of the heavily stricken areas.

“I got home, and I found that my house had collapsed. My family was located in the resettlement area, short of food and water. We were on the foot of the mountain. There was only a cart path, and there would probably be a landslide when it rained. We had to carry the baskets on our backs and go outside for food.”

On the afternoon of August 5th, Amity’s second batch of emergency relief supplies arrived at Huodehong Village. Guo Taiquan and Guo Taijiang turned to the rescue team and volunteered to assist the team with the relief supplies’ registration and distribution. Afterwards, they

joined Amity’s rescue team and became two volunteers. On August 6th, the rescue team was divided into groups to investigate the disaster-stricken areas and evaluate the needs. In the early morning, Guo Taiquan and Guo Taijiang brought several young men to the team, “We are familiar with the road, and let’s show you the way!”

Guo Taiquan was just one of the earthquake-stricken people. What he and his fellows brought to the rescue team and the disaster area was not only the human assistance. They helped themselves and others.

I Am a Dancer Now

I was on the stage in traditional Dai dress, swaying and dancing to my song in front of villagers. Seeing my fellows’ smiles, suddenly I felt that all the efforts and changes were worthwhile.

My name is Xiao Ye. I am a member of the performance team of Padi Village, Mang City, Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Now I am quite active being part of the performance team. But before that I went through a heavy, dark time. I was infected with HIV back in 2011. At that time people around

Guo Taiquan (middle) said, "My fellow villagers need me".

Page 10: ECOSOC, UN - 爱德基金会 --- The Amity Foundation ECOSOC, UN. Our Vision Abundant lives, ... Amity serves society, ... 12 Education and International Exchange 15 Social Welfare

me knew that. They wouldn’t talk to me anymore, not even to my family. I could feel other people looking at me weirdly. Then I locked myself away, because I worried about people seeing me and judging me. At the end of 2013, our health worker introduced me to the Amity Foundation. Amity supported HIV-infected people to give a field visit to other villages that did well in planting crops and raising cows. I was shocked. One HIV-infected person like me was already refused in my village; I couldn’t imagine what would happen if a HIV-infected team visited outside. However, I started to relax when I saw many people who were in the same situation with me at health worker’s place. They talked with me. Mr. Li (the head of Amity Project Office) encouraged us to live healthily and regain the hope of life by having

III. Achievements 1. Public Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention

In 2014, actions were taken on rural health care plan and online fundraising for health workers, which not only improved basic medical conditions and the professional skills of local medical personnel, but also mobilized more initiative and participation of society on public health. Through Alipay and Taobao.com, we achieved remarkable result of fund-raising for public health and HIV/AIDS prevention projects. The rural health care plan attracted heavy attention for the public.

new experience on money-making. It was the first time that I felt cared and loved since being infected.

Activities facilitated villagers to be connected with each other. Encouraged by positive changes in our lives, we decided to organize a performance team to entertain our fellow villagers. I like dancing. I became a dancer in the team. We sang and dance to celebrate festivals and major events in the village. We enjoyed the new confidence and passion.

II. Program OverviewIn 2014, we implemented 45 projects in 51 cities/counties of 11 provinces in China. The international Biogas project in Madagascar continued smoothly. All the projects benefited a total of 1.09 million people in 2014.

2. Community Development and Environment Protection

Self-development ability of communities was remarkably improved. We implemented projects on development of farmers’ organizations, gender equality, and support to vulnerable groups. We advocated community-based environmental protection and the public’s engagement in decision making. The mode of cooperation with project partners was changed from “donation-acceptance” to “mutual support and learning”. Some project areas became more mature and even functioned as Amity’s education base of rural community development.

3. Disaster Management

In 2014, we coped with major challenges and made record-breaking fast response to three earthquakes respectively in Yingjiang, Ludian, and Jinggu, all in Yunnan Province. Fund raised Ludian Earthquake reached over RMB 10 million, the highest in recent years. It was also the first time that Amity sent over 30 staffers to the front line of disaster relief. Amity also implemented a cross-province flood relief project to help people suffering a lot from the floods in Guangxi and Hunan.

Education & Orphan Fostering

I. Project StoryA Story of Basketball Stands

Hongqi Tan Primary School is five kilometers away from the South Mountain of Gangou Town, Minhe County, Qinghai Province and its local villagers are all Muslims. As a remote small school, it had endured the lack of educational resources for a long time.

In 2000, Hongqi Tan Primary School received a donation of a set of basketball stands. After exposure to the elements for years, it was almost out of function.

In 2014 the Amity Foundation donated a set of new basketball stands and other sports equipments to the school, which delighted both students and teachers there. Just on the second morning after the donation, they voluntarily established an installation team and set up the stands only within less than two hours. Different from the previously quietness, the campus was filled with excitement and vitality that day. It seemed that the teachers and students were celebrating a festival.

II. Program OverviewAiming at education equality, Amity’s Education and Orphan Fostering program always strives for better education resources for underdeveloped rural areas in China. We support orphans and schools in need of help, while communicating the public on the situations of education in rural China.

In 2014, we financially supported

7,310 orphans, offered 5312 books and 6122 desks & chairs to rural schools, and equipped 110 rural schools with sports facility. We also financially aided 81 children who were seriously ill.

III. AchievementsCompared with previous years, we focused more on spiritual care to orphans in 2014. We offered gifts to orphans during traditional festivals like the Mid-Autumn Festival and

the Spring Festival, held summer camps in some project areas and launched other activities, which were good for children’s spiritual development. With the Rural Schools Rebuilding Project, we launched initiatives like Teaching Facilities Offering and Function Rooms, Solar Power Bathroom and Sport & Art Rooms Building. In 2014, we cooperated with TECENT.com and the US-based WATSI.com to launch an emergency medical assistant project, Love Has No Boundary. The project marked a new model of cooperation for us and our partners. The Amity Foundation used to be responsible for project implementation. But with the new cooperation model, we invited our partner NGOs to operate the projects. The new model expanded our partnerships and attracted heavy attention and involvement of the public.

Education and International Exchange

I. Project StoryWhen I fell in love with China

My name is Marthe Andreassen. I am 20 years old and I come from Norway. I'm a student at a school in Norway called Hald International Centre where I study cross-cultural communication and international work. It's a school with students from all over the world. As part of the exchange program, these international students stay in Norway while we Norwegian students go to their countries to experience a new culture and to work as volunteers.

I got a big culture shock when I first came to China. I'm from a small town at the countryside with only 7 thousand residents where cows are walking in the town centre and views of fields and mountains are seeable. Nanjing is a city with over 8 million residents, with tall buildings and people everywhere. The language is totally different. I remember I asked myself the first days: “What am I doing here?” But then I remembered that it was supposed to be different. If I wanted everything to be the same, I should have stayed in Norway!

12 AMITY 2014

I started to work at Children Development Centre, which is a centre for autistic children. I had no experience with autistic kids from earlier. I suffered some tough days. I didn't feel like I managed my job, and I asked myself again: “What am I doing here?”

After a while I got the chance to visit the countryside. It was an amazing experience, and I realized that China is not just big cities and crazy traffic. China got a breathtaking nature that amazed me. And even though the people we visited were very poor, they showed happiness and generosity I've never seen before. That was when I fell in love with China. I started working again with a new motivation. I got

more confided and connected with the kids. I got to know the routines, and everything was easier. I decided to show that I can handle the kids with pure love.

After spending the first months without any friends beside my team-mate, I finally got someone else to hang out with. I started to get to know the culture and a little of the language. I think it's really interesting. I realized that I wasn't supposed to come to China to make a change, but to change myself. I came to learn, to experience how it is to be a foreigner and to get a new point of view. And now with less than a month left, I can't imagine how I can ever leave this place.

III. Achievements We began to focus on “going out” projects in 2014. A group of 7 volunteers were organized by Amity to join the disaster relief and reconstruction work in Philippines. We established an agreement with two overseas organizations to send Chinese volunteers to intern and volunteer in the United States and Germany. The agreement will enable young Chinese opportunities of being immersed in different cultures. They are also considered as Amity representatives for people-to-people contact.

The Service Learning Program made a great progress on “bringing in” in 2014. We reached an agreement with Korea for “KIEP” program (China-Korea International Exchange Program) about starting the reciprocal visits beginning from 2015. The aim of the program is to facilitate people-to-people contact between China and Korea.

I. Project StoryA Teacher’s Reflection on Bilingual Teaching

I have been involved in math teaching of bilingual class for nine years. I deeply felt that sign language could promote the logical thinking ability of the deaf students. I have a student called Wang Ning. He studied one year in another Class, however, he got a 0 in the final math examination. His teachers thought he might be mentally retarded and his parents insisted him study for another year in Grade One. So he was finally referred to my class. All the students in my class received no preschool education and their average age is 7. As a responsible teacher, I insisted in using bilingual teaching approach.

The first step is to give intensive exposure of sign language to the students. During the first month, all the teachers are required to spend time in helping the students learn sign language. They played with the students and accompanied them to watch sign stories. During this process, the students gained

their basic communication ability in sign language very quickly. Then, we started to teach them different subjects. We found that all the students could follow the approach well. Wang Ning also showed no difference with the other students.

So, reflecting on my teaching, I

2014 AMITY 15

think the only difference between the teachers in the other classes and me was that I recognized the sign language of the deaf students and encouraged them to use it in academic learning. Evidence showed that sign language awakened the cognitive development of the deaf people.

16 AMITY 2014

II. Program OverviewThe goal of the program is to improve the safety, health, development, and well-being of vulnerable children in China. We advocate the development, acceptance and replication of holistic and child right based services. It has always been our vision to enable better development and equal social participation of children and young adults with disabilities, the disadvantaged, and the marginal groups.

In 2014, we raised RMB 5,511,940 for 14 projects, benefiting 4,062 people directly, and 7,000 people indirectly. The project area covers 10 provinces, namely Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Guizhou, Sichuan, Anhui, Ningxia, Shandong, and Chongqin.

III. Achievements 1. Foster Care Project

The project emphasizes Children’s right of having a family, which proved to be the best environment for children’s development. Our partnership with Social Welfare Institutes (SWI) tried to find eligible families for children with special needs and access various community resources to enable better social inclusion and development of the children. In 2014, the Amity Foundation supported 560 orphans to live with

foster families and assisted the households to cooperate with local community resource centers.

2. Amity Bilingual Deaf Education Project

Amity Bilingual Deaf Education Project aims to expand our best practices from Jiangsu Province to other provinces. The project promotes bilingual deaf education in deaf schools by teaching deaf children Chinese Sign Language (CSL) as their first language while teaching Chinese as their second language and teaching all the other school subjects in CSL. We

advocate that CSL is the natural language of deaf people in China. The rights of deaf children to use CSL should be ensured. In 2014, there were 284 children in 29 bilingual classes from preschool to Grade 6 in 17 project schools benefited directly from receiving the bilingual education taught by both hearing and deaf teachers. The 30 deaf teachers who taught in cooperation with their hearing counterparts played very important roles in the project.

NGO Development

I. Project Story From a social worker to an NGO leader

When met up with the Nantong branch of Amity NGO Development Center for the first time, Ms. Bai was a social worker working with the Justice Bureau of Chongchuan District, Nantong, Jiangsu Province. The meeting was about the cooperation between Amity and local partners on an adolescent health promotion project, which was supposed to provide capacity building, financial support and resource links to grassroots NGOs working on preventing adolescent anomie.

Ms. Bai was very interested in joining the cooperation. She marked that the project could rely on community-based NGOs to provide flexible services to young people in need of help. She would like to provide assistance and consultancy to individuals and groups from grassroots NGOs involved in the project. She attended capacity building workshops arranged by Amity and got an in-depth understanding

18 AMITY 2014

on the operation of NGOs. Considering Ms. Bai’s strong interest in grassroots NGOs and the philanthropy sector, Amity tried to support her to plan philanthropy projects, in which she would play a leadership role.

Utilizing resources available to her, Ms. Bai designed and launched a

project soon. She also built a team to implement the project. With this project, she experienced the whole process of project management. Later she became the leader of Nantong RenAi Development Center for Social Work. Working with Amity, she saw a bright future of grassroots NGOs.

II. Program OverviewBacked by the central and local governments’ policy-making efforts of promoting social governance, Amity NGO Development Center expanded its service categories and resource channels, standardized it operations, and enjoyed steady growth in 2014. Powered by enhanced expertise and consolidated core operations, the Center’s three branches in Nanjing, Nantong and Kunshan integrated resources and built platforms to provide community-based services and support the development of grassroots non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

III. Achievements In 2014, Amity NGO Development Center supported the startup and development of 61 new grassroots NGOs, managed venture philanthropy fund of RMB 10.65

million, launched 2 community-based social work projects, operated 2 service-providing entities, arranged 198 sessions of training and supervision, and facilitated the implementation of 161 philanthropy projects.

With explorative efforts in building a new model of community governance, the Center diversified

its operations. Community-based social work was introduced into the New Jiangnan Community while integrated community-based services were provided by the Center’s operations in Qixia District of Nanjing. I. Project StoriesChanges of Ma Li

Ma Li is slow learner receiving rehabilitation training rehabilitated at Amity Home of Blessings. Being 20 years old, she looked like a five-year-old child in terms of cognitive development. When she came to Amity Home of Blessings for the first time, she made no connection with others, as if she was wrapped into a silkworm pod. Teachers at the Home noticed her uneasiness and shyness due to lack of interaction with the outside world. They talked to her, encouraged her to join in games, arranged simple tasks for her, and timely rewarded her for her improvement. After 6 months, Ma Li began to trust the teachers and love the other students. She didn’t avoid eye contact any longer. After another 6 months, Ma Li became active in class. She greeted teachers and classmates actively. She was happy in doing exercises. Teachers and staff members of the Home were all perceptive of changes of Ma Li, with warm and sincere congratulations for her.

A Happy Grandpa

Mr. Xu Jiading, a 95-year-old elder, spent the last period of his life in Amity Rengu Nursing Home. He suffered several diseases such as hypertension

and coronary heart disease. Care taken by his family couldn’t meet his need. He was sent to Rengu in March 2014. In spite of poor eyesight and hearing, he was fond of chatting with others. With a wealth of life experiences, he was willing to share his life stories with others. The staffers of the Home liked the unique grandpa and called him "baby Xu".

Xu liked to make jokes. He complained some day, “I’m dissatisfied with the caregivers. They touched my feet and legs at night. They were indecent”. The caregivers all knew that Xu made a joke again. They rearranged his quilt at night to keep him away

from catching a cold. A caregiver laughed and responded, “You are so handsome that all of us are attracted by you.” The response made Xu very happy. Xu's children came to visit their father once a week. Seeing that their father was well looked after, Xu’s children were grateful for what Amity caregivers have done.

II. Program Overview Amity’s urban community service programs include Amity Rengu Nursing Home, Qixia Nursing Home, Baguazhou Nursing Home, Qixia In-home Eldercare Center, Qixia Virtual Nursing Home, HaoLaiWu In-home Eldercare Center, Amity Home of Blessings, Amity Children Development Center, and Amity Bakery.

III. AchievementsIn 2014, Amity’s nursing homes tailored the provision of services to the residents’ needs. Daily care was integrated with volunteers’ services. The homes served 172 senior residents, arranged 790 recreation and entertainment activities, and established 6 groups of social workers dedicated for eldercare.

Amity’s community-based eldercare entities made remarkable achievements in 2014. Qixia Virtual Nursing Home’s membership increased to 1404 while 4767 people joined the elder life experience activities arranged by the Home. HaoLaiWu In-home Eldercare Center focused on its meal-providing project Love Lunch and expanded its services to cover 42,000 people.

In 2014, Amity Home of Blessings served a total of 26 students, including 3 new students. According to their ability levels, 18 students were trained at Amity Home of Blessings, 8 students were assigned to the Amity Bakery to learn occupational skills.

Amity Children Development Center provided free consultation services on autism for 87 families and rendered full-time healing and education to 72 children suffering autism. Implementing a provincial-level trial project for autistic teenagers (7-14 years old) in Gulou District of Nanjing, the Center provided assessment and one-to-one training for 7 autistic children. The Center reduced the tuition fee as a result of successful fund raising while the quality of services remained unchanged. In October, the center held the Fifth International Autism Seminar, which was well-attended by more than 250 participants.

Amity Bakery had made great progress in both bakery operation and advocating Amity’s philanthropy philosophy. Amity Bakery achieved an annual sales of RMB 3.82 million. Job skill training was provided to 8 students of Amity Home of Blessings and occupational rehabilitation to 7 students. Amity Bakery held 31 charity bazaars and dozens of experience activities with thousands of participants.

Media Exposure Amity enjoyed high media exposure in 2014. Among big bang events are International Workshop on Disaster Relief and Rehabilitation, International Symposium on Eldercare Services and Cognitive Disorders, and Hiking for Charity.

To facilitate more friends in the media to witness and experience Amity projects and the changes of people and communities working with Amity projects, we arranged a media visit, which were funded by Bread for the World. Seventeen journalists from ten major Chinese media, including China News Agency and People's Daily, joined the visit. The journalists visited Amity’s scholarship and orphan fostering projects and integrated rural development projects in Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. The visit triggered heavy media coverage on Amity and enabled the formation of a platform for communication and cooperation between the media and Amity.

Online Fundraising Through multi-platform collaboration, Amity’s online fundraising result exceeded RMB 18 million in 2014, with an increase of 38.5% over the year 2013. This represented more awareness and support among the public. Innovative online efforts included Taobao Auction and Crowd-funding cooperation for international projects and with the media and grassroots NGOs. Our new media operation kept pace with technological development and enjoyed robust existence on major mobile Internet portals, including WeChat, Mobile QQ and Paypal Wallet. Working with WATSI in USA and Tencent Foundation, Amity was able to launch a crowd-funding program for medical assistance with beneficiaries in 15 countries mainly in Africa.

Volunteer ManagementManaging 4,169 registered volunteers, we supported regular volunteer services and worked with Amity’s service-providing entities to offer more service opportunities. After a series of advocacy campaigns touring campuses in Nanjing, a volunteer network for cooperation between Amity and local primary schools, secondary schools, colleges and universities was established.

Fundraising from Enterprises and Publicity Events

Project coverage of partnerships with enterprises expanded from education to environmental protection, disaster management, healthcare, medicine, and some innovation initiatives. As a new addition to our publicity-driven fundraising events, Hiking for Charity 2014 attracted more than two thousand hikers and volunteers with a whopping fund raised for orphans in need of help. Upgrading our existed project Love Lunch into a cartoon-themed Canteen for Our Parents won the favor of online donors.

People to People Contacts and Ecumenical Sharing

A core mission of Amity HK is to enable young people to understand the various aspects of modern China and to realize their capacity to serve their “neighbours”. Capitalizing on the variety of projects we have on the Mainland, we continued to provide authentic experiences for 320 young people in such forms as exchange visits, summer camps for orphans, and volunteer teaching of English last year.

In keeping with this mission, activities were organised in Hong Kong where we engaged over 2,600 young people in thematic activities such as the Walk for Living Water or mini-walks at individual schools. The concurrent information sharing sessions brought the plights of the needy people closer to home, enabling many to appreciate the enormity of water and other social issues.

The Castle Peak St Peter’s Church

members have been most interested in Amity’s work. To enable their members to better understand our projects and Christian life in China, an exposure trip to Guizhou was organized in October. Feedback after the trip was most encouraging as could be inferred from their written reflections.

Amity HK helped to organize an exposure trip for 80 students, teachers and parents from CCC Kei Wa Primary School and CCC Heep Wop Primary School to Nanjing at the end of 2014. Besides sightseeing in Nanjing and an eye-opening visit to the Amity Printing Press, they had opportunities to help out at the Amity Bakery and Amity Rengu Home for the Elderly. Their feedback on return was most encouraging and the two schools are now committed to support Amity’s cause in helping the needy in the future.

The year of such youth empowerment activities culminated in a seminar

Amity Foundation, Hong Kong (Amity HK ) has been blessed with a year when we were able to work towards our vision of engaging young people in authentic experiences in China while focused on our mission of love in action. On the disaster-relief front, we had been working closely with our partners on the Mainland and also overseas, learning from them in the process.

Page 29: ECOSOC, UN - 爱德基金会 --- The Amity Foundation ECOSOC, UN. Our Vision Abundant lives, ... Amity serves society, ... 12 Education and International Exchange 15 Social Welfare

near Christmas time in a church when young people involved in such encounters gave personal reflections of what they have actully learnt through these acts of love. It was a moving experience for all who attended and the fellowship sowed the seeds for further cooperation with more school and church partners.

Living Water Project The aims of the project are twofold: to take concrete action to help remote water-deprived villages get a sustained supply of safe potable water and to help young people understand their capacity to make a difference in others’ lives. This year, we raised around HK$400,000 to build water purification facilities and solar energy showers for the students and teachers in a Yunnan school, so that students could study and teachers could work in a safer and more hygienic environment.

Disaster Relief and Reconstruction

On 8 November 2013, the strongest typhoon Haiyan (local name Yolanda) struck the southern Philippines, damaging up to 95% of houses and other infrastructure with winds up to 315 km/h. Working closely with our local partner Kaisa Para Sa Kaunlaran (Kaisa), we provided immediate

aid funding with an initial grant of HK$70,000 from our limited reserve. We then appealed to the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee (DRFAC) of the Hong Kong SAR Government, which granted HK$2.057 million in December targeting relief work in Northern Iloilo, an area lacking in support due to the dearth of media attention. As more relief aid poured in from other parts of the world, we were racing against time to find out the most urgent needs of the typhoon victims. Working closely with Kaisa and having Amity HK personnel on the ground, we were able to modify the aid items to better match the needs of various local communities.

We were also fortunate to get the support of the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club members, whose generous donation of HK$180,000

spelt a new beginning for 34 fisherman families chosen based on relative livelihood needs. The money was used to purchase the hull, the engine, a propeller set and fishing nets so these families could start fishing again soon. Additionally, working with the Iloilo Citizen Action Group and the local Red Cross Chapter, a “Payment Forward” agreement was signed at the handover ceremony in March with the beneficiary families. Essentially, they willingly pledged to plough back some of their future earnings into a central fund so more families could ultimately benefit.

Torrential rain ravaged many counties in Hunan and Guangxi in May, hitting ecologically vulnerable villages worst. Thousands of families were left homeless and their livelihood devastated as fields were flooded

and even swept away. An appeal was made to the DRFAC, which subsequently granted HK$ 5.144 million for humanitarian aid benefiting a total of 6,800 households in these regions.

In August, a disastrous earthquake of magnitude 6.5 on the Richter scale with an intensity of up to VII (Very Strong) on the Mercalli intensity scale struck Ludian, Yunnan. The government initiated a Class One Emergency Response in Relief since the stricken communities were isolated, impoverished and most houses not quake-proof. DRFAC responded to our request by approving a sum of $ 6.317 million for emergency aid to 7,500 families. Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui Archbishop World Relief Fund also donated $100,000 to support our relief and rehabilitation programmes, benefiting many families. Two Amity HK colleagues went to the area in late August and help distribute relief goods, bringing love and hope from well-wishers to the victims.

Village Clinics

It was the 4th and final year of the Three-in-One Support Programme in Guizhou. The Rotary Club of Hong Kong Harbour provided monthly subsidies as recurrent support to 14 village doctors in 10 clinics built in Chengong County with donations from the Club. Altogether Club members have

Amity staff understanding the challenges of a quake-stricken family Ludian, Yunnan

put up close to HK$1 million to support the health programme in that County during the last four years, tiding over a critical period in basic health care for villagers. Essentially, the much improved working conditions and pay package encouraged trained health workers to stay in their rural medical practices, who might otherwise leave for better prospects in cities. We are pleased to note that the Government is now able to allocate more resources for health services and the local authorities have established some best practices, and thus the need for independent financial support is much reduced.

University for Girls Project

In 2014, thanks to the increasing concern from donors and volunteers, 41 new students from poor families in Guizhou could afford their degree studies. Currently, a total of 128 students are under the sponsorship of the Project in Guizhou University, Guizhou Normal University and Guiyang Medical College.

The Personal Development seminars, an integral element of our support to these girls from impoverished backgrounds, have been further strengthened. Experts and volunteers from different fields contributed their professional knowledge, and helped us put

shape into a more comprehensive curriculum, in order to suit these girls’ needs at various stages in their university education.

School Rebuilding Project

Despite the large sums of central funding for education, there are still a huge number of students studying in dilapidated, or unsafe school buildings in extremely remote villages on the Mainland. These schools are typically smaller, catering to fewer children and hence not getting priority for rebuilding when resources are limited. Thanks to the generous support of donors, this year we funded the reconstruction of Nandao Primary School, which

is located in Taijiang County, Guizhou Province.

We also organize trips for donors to schools which had had their financial support. In April, our staunch supporter Mr. Lu Kwong-fai, nicknamed “Mountain Dog” and known for his selfless exploits in dangerous terrain, went with a contingent of Hong Kong primary school heads to Yongshun County, Hunan. Besides witnessing the opening of the Chalin school, they brought the children some stationeries, school bags and other gifts embodying their love in action. Invariably, the participants came back with a strong commitment to mobilize assistance from Hong Kong.

Action e 10000 - Rural Orphan Fostering Project

Donors’ support goes a long way in helping orphans meet basic needs such as sufficient nourishment, clothing and medical care. Moreover, the requirement for them to be in school ensures that they are properly educated and cared for by teachers.

With the continued support from enthusiastic Hong Kong people, the number of orphans financially aided through Amity HK this year rose from 112 to 226, among

Young volunteers learning about life in villages

whom, 8 of them are now studying in universities as their sponsors are keen to give them the best education.

Providing some form of assistance on psychological development continued to be a main focus in this project. To this end, a summer camp was organized in Tongzi, Guizhou last year.

After the camp, home visits were organised to provide volunteers a glimpse into orphans’ life in villages. From post-camp reflections, the time spent in such households, though limited, was enough for volunteers to gain insight into multiple facets of life on the Mainland and, by comparison, the encounter left the visitors much food for thought of their own blessings. A special visit for donors was organised in December. Five families with 6 young children visited 20 orphans living with relatives in Sichuan villages. The visiting children also celebrated the festive season with pupils in a small village school nearby. Bearing gifts from afar and providing entertaining activities they caused much sensation that winter afternoon among the 80 odd pupils. Though the encounters were brief, indelible memories had remained which moved the Hong Kong children to share their unusual “holiday” with their peers in school so more people would be aware of the dire needs of rural communities in China.
