This is what Hassan Bo, a German soccer coach, believes and uses to train his young players. Since July of this year, Bo has offered free summer clinics for Shenzhen kids who are interested in improving their “soccer intelli- gence.” Each student that joins Bo’s Technical Endurance Soccer Training will take part in a three-day free summer clinic to improve their cognitive skills. “I do not charge these kids and their parents for the clinics, but if they have really learned something from me and improved their skills, they can follow my training later,” said Bo. Born in Egypt, the German soccer coach was once a player on the Egyptian national soccer team and trained and played in Europe, particularly in Germany, for years. The train- ing system that the coach employs is based on German training methods he learned while playing there. The innovative training methods aim at increasing the attention capacity, focus and concentration of players. “People normally think that soccer players should let loose when playing, but actually they will play better if they learn to constrain themselves and this is what I teach the kids here in Shenzhen to improve their decision-making while playing so as to control the ball and the game,” said the coach. Liu Wenbo is a primary school student in Shenzhen. He told Shenzhen Daily that he had been training with Bo for a few months now. The player said that what he had learned from Bo was very different from the skills he had learned at his school. “Coach Bo trained our way of thinking while playing, but my school team puts more focus on strategy,” said Liu. The student player thinks that Bo’s training methods have prepared him with different skills, both basic playing skills and cognitive skills to deal with different situ- ations. Apart from training kid players during the summer holiday, Bo is also a coach for his own club and has worked at local schools training students. According to him, the free summer program will end in mid-August and he will continue to train local school teams when the school semester commences in September.
