Robots — The 500-Year Quest to Make Machines Human

Since the 16th century, people have gradually invented marvelous automatons following the anatomy of the human body. During the Industrial Revolution, people began to use machines to replace human hands to perform repeated actions, which laid the foundation for developing robots. With advances in science and technology, robots that imitate human actions have been developed over the centuries. In addition to being used in industrial production, they have played an important role in science fiction. In recent years, robots have become more human. They can walk on two legs, jump, and even do a somersault. They can express emotions with facial expressions and look around with eye cameras to capture their surrounding environment. The latest development involves using artificial intelligence with robots, allowing them to think, react and learn like humans.

The “Robots” exhibition explores the 500-year story of humanoid robots and the artistic and scientific quest to understand what it means to be human. Set in five different periods, the exhibition uncovers how robots and society have been shaped by our understanding of the universe, the Industrial Revolution, 20th century popular culture, and our dreams of the future. This intriguing exhibition features a unique collection of over 100 robots, from the earliest automatons to robots from science fiction and modern-day research labs. Through this incredible journey, visitors can see the latest humanoid robots in action and explore how, and more importantly why engineers are building robots that resemble us and interact in human-like ways.

Donations of mineral and rock specimens

New Collection

In May of this year, courtesy of Prof. CHAN Lung-sang, Hong Kong geologist and Museum Expert Adviser of the Hong Kong Science Museum, a batch of over 60 valuable mineral and rock specimens was donated to the Hong Kong Science Museum to enrich its museum collections. There is a wide range of specimen types, including minerals, rocks and fossils, with very high scientific and research value.

Minerals and rocks are important keys for unlocking the Earth's history. Research and analysis of these "stones" provide us with a deeper understanding of the geological history and evolution of the Earth. In the future, we will use these new and significant collections to enrich the content of our exhibition and education programmes to enhance people’s knowledge of geology.

Youngsters are full of passion. They pursue their ideals and dreams, and have high hopes of the future. The Joint School Science Exhibition has a long and rich history of providing every student who loves science with a platform to pursue their dreams.

For the past 52 years, the Joint School Science Exhibition Preparation Committee was devoted to promote science to local students; and at the same time, to increase the public’s interest on science through intriguing and challenging events. The Joint School Science Exhibition, which is held every August, emphasises on encouraging cooperation amongst local secondary school students. To facilitate exchange, overseas students are also invited to participate, hence students from all over the world can show their talent and learn from each other in the competition. During the competition, the Committee has also invited professors from universities to coach participants and bring their works to another level. It is hoped that the participating teams can showcase the works with their blood, sweat, and tears in the exhibition.

The theme of this year is “Creating Workplace, Imagining Science”, participants are going to improve the working environment by analysing the unfavourable factors, improving work safety and reducing the use of resources in the workplace. They hope to assist the public to create a better workplace through scientific innovations. Members of the public are welcome to visit the exhibition.
