Dvar Halacha - The Halachos of Losh, or Kneading, on Shabbos Part 2 by Shmuel Goodman, 11th Grade
Dvar Torah (פרקי אבות. )הכובש את יצרו? איזהו גיבור by Rabbi Bergida
bribed him with one thousand silver bars. יוסף הצדיק still
held his ground, refusing to succumb to his temptation.
The א "מהרש and בן יהוידע tell us that Hashem
rewarded יוסף by removing him from prison, opening his
eyes to the interpretation of פרעה’s dreams, and further
building his stature by allowing him to feed the entire
world.
In a letter to a fellow who needed support in
these areas of temptation ( 'יג' קריינא דאגרתא יב ) the Steipler
Gaon ל "זצ writes that one who is at the height of
temptation but overpowers his desires because they are
prohibited by the תורה draws a tremendous holiness,
even though he may have failed many times. Such a
person is placed on the same level as יוסף הצדיק, who
sanctified Hashem’s name in private, meriting
tremendous reward.
Realizing the astronomical appreciation that
Hashem has for those who overcome powerful
temptations may give us the boost we need to fight our
battles.

The ' גמ :(יומא לה)
teaches that the test
t h a t יוסף הצדיק
endured with אשת
was more פוטיפר
challenging than the
temptation experienced by any רשע,
proving that even those who
experience temptations are not
excused from learning Torah.
The גמ ' continues by describing the attempts of
She first attempted to seduce him with .אשת פוטיפר
words, and would dress up and frequently change her
clothing in order to further tempt Yosef. Nevertheless,
continuously refused her advances. She then יוסף
threatened to confine him in prison, bend his proud
stature, and even blind him. יוסף responded that
“Hashem releases the imprisoned, straightens the bent
and gives sight to the blind”; he tells her that he is
governed only by the will of Hashem, and will not be
led astray from what he knows to be right. She then
The Melocha of Losh, or binding together two
substances (one solid and one liquid) into one mixture,
has two stages. Performing either action is generally
forbidden on Shabbos. In order to make a mixture on
Shabbos, one must use the appropriate Shinuyim by
both steps of the Losh process. When putting together
the ingredients of a “soft” mixture (one which is thin
enough to pour from one vessel to another, but thicker
than a liquid), one should place the ingredients into the
vessel out of order. If the normal method is to add the
liquid before the solid, then one should add the solid
before the liquid, or vice-versa. However, this Shinuy
cannot be used by a “thick mixture” (one which is so
thick that it cannot be poured from one vessel to
another). There are three permissible ways to add
together the ingredients of a thick mixture. The way
first is to add together the ingredients in a time of need
or danger. When not in a time of need, one may add
together the solid and the liquid if the liquid is so thick
that it doesn't automatically mix with the solid (example:
a glob of mayonnaise on top of tuna fish does not mix
with the tuna on its own). The other permissible method
is to add together the ingredients before Shabbos, then
mix them on Shabbos while employing the proper
Shinuyim.
When kneading together the ingredients, one
must mix them in a manner different from normal
mixing. One method brought down is to mix the
ingredients together in a criss-cross manner, not in the
usual circular stirring motion. Preferably, one should lift
the utensil from the mixture in between each mixing
action. Other methods brought down are to shake the
ingredients in a bowl or other dish, or to pour the
ingredients from vessel to vessel.

highlights of each school
year is the class Shabbaton.
Every year, students have
an unique opportunity to
bond with their classmates
and Rabbeim over the
weekend. All students,
including those who live in
other areas of South
Florida, make their way to
North Miami Beach for the
Shabbaton. The students eat
their Shabbos meals at their
Rebbe’s house and are
treated to an oneg with
singing and games. The
talmidim also have the
opportunity to lead the

Shabbos minyan. One
Rebbe commented that it is
not every day that an entire
grade will get together as a
single unit, and that it is
terrific when students who
are not necessarily in the
same classes are having a
great time together. For
example, after the 11th
grade’s exciting visit to the
J.C.C. on Motzai Shabbos,
they had a melaveh malka
with an unforgettable
kumzits, in which strong
bonds were formed. The
10th grade played football at
a private beach, and had an
amazing kumzits under the
starry sky. The 9th grade
took time off on Sunday to
play volleyball and football
at Greynolds Park. One
student said, “At first I
didn’t want to come, but my
class forced me and I had
such great time that I can’t
imagine why didn’t I want
to go in the first place.”
Many students are tired,
they are allowed to get a
later start the following
Sunday morning.
Completing our extraordinary group of honorees are Mr. and Mrs. Chaim and Bryna Roth, who will be accepting the Young Leadership Award in memory of Chaim's beloved father, Reb Reuven Yisroel ben Chaim Hirsch A"H. Mr. Roth A”H, or “Robbie”, as he was known, was involved in virtually every facet of Jacksonville’s Jewish life, founding both Beth Sholom Synagogue and the Torah Academy, and serving as President of Etz Chaim Synagogue. Chaim and Bryna Roth have embraced that legacy of involvement – he as a board member of the North Miami Beach Community Kollel and she as a devoted employee of our Early Childhood Division, as well as through her high level of involvement in numerous Yeshiva projects – the Annual Chinese Auction, PTA Chanukah Boutique, organizing class mothers, to name a few. Together, they are “paying it forward” through their ma’asim tovim and extensive involvement in our kehilla.
