Silent Auction
Dorin Panainte has donated 2 pieces of sculpture to be auctioned tonight. The proceeds go to the Māia Foundation.
Here in Canterbury we have faced enormous upheaval over recent years and that’s had a tremendous and long-lasting impact on the mental health of our community. You don’t have to look far to realise the struggles that our community is facing in terms of mental health. We all know people affected by mental illness – whether it’s you, a loved one or a friend. We will all have a story to tell.
The Māia Health Foundation’s next focus is on much-needed facilities for child and youth mental health services. We want vulnerable people in our community to be cared for in a physical environment that supports their wellbeing; a place that they will want to go to for the help they need and to focus on being well. And we want a place that supports our health workforce to continue to do the amazing job they do.
We are currently talking to the Canterbury District Health Board to understand how we can support the DHB and their specialist staff to develop mental health facilities that we can all be proud of. This won’t be for the faint-hearted. It will require vision and tenacity, passion and hard work… but we know that the health of our community is worth it. And we know Māia has an amazing community of supporters and that together we will be able to get this done. To find out more go to www.maiahealth.org.nz.
Dorin Panainte was born and raised in Transylvania, Romania. He, along with his wife and daughter immigrated to New Zealand in early 2008. Said Dorin, “We moved for a change of lifestyle. New Zealand had a lot to offer”.
Previously having spent 5 years doing copper art work, Dorin’s father was his inspiration for his artistic tendencies. “He used to fix everything for everyone and also create things from nothing”. Dorin’s daughter also shows artistic flare, painting and Dorin sees himself “somewhere in between”.
He saw the unused instruments and decided he could do something with them. Dorin is currently also working on another unused instruments project.
“Imagination has no limits and you can transform lots of things from scrap into something nice. Just instant…spark”.
