Biodiesel is the name of a clean burning alternative fuelproduced from domestic , renewable resources .

Biodiesel is defined as the mono-alkyl esters of fatty acidsderived from vegetable oils or animal fats.

In simple terms , Biodiesel is the product you get when avegetable oil or animal fat is chemically reacted with alcoholto produce a new compound known as fatty acid alkyl ester.

Increase of energy supply security. Reduction of dependence on fossil energy

forms. Reduction of harmful locally acting emissions. Protection of soil by biodegradable products. Reduction of health hazard by using non-toxic

products. Biodiesel extends the life of diesel engines.

Biodiesel could be cheaper than conventionaldiesel.

Biodiesel has good potential for ruralemployment generation.

Edible:Soya-bean, Sun-flower, Mustard Oil etc.Non-edible:Jatropha , Curcas, Pongemia Pinnata, Neem etc.

As we cant use edible seeds for production of biodieselin our country because of its indigenous demand so we haveto use non-edible seeds like TBO , Jatropha etc.

Jatropha has been identified as the most suitable seed asa source for the production of biodiesel in India .

Transesterification, also called alcoholysis, is the displacement of alcoholfrom an ester by another alcohol. Methanol is most commonly used for thepurpose.

As a substitute for fast depleting fossil fuel, bio diesel had come tostay. In future, it should also serve to reduce and maintain theprice of automobile fuel.

Bio diesel plays an important role in our day to day life. So,concentrated research and developmental efforts are needed toaccelerate their penetration into various industries.
