SomersetWestwomanescapes car thieves
DELIAH BRINKHUIS
I would probably not be here today if
they managed to get me into the car.
This is howSomersetWest residentTama-
ryn Kruger (29) recalls the incident on Tues-
day evening when she was held at gunpoint
and her Hyundai i20 was stolen.
Kruger arrived at her Arlington Street
home at about 19:45, after attending a belly-
dancing class in Strand.
According to Kruger she generally is very
security conscious and will always make
sure of her surroundings and only get out
when it is safe to do so.
Kruger says she looked in the carsmirror
and, assured that it was safe, climbed out of
the car.
The motorised gate had, however, not
closed yet and she realised that she had
pushed the gates remote which opened it,
instead of closing it.
Just then two men stuck their heads
around thewall andpeered through theopen
gate.
I realised what was happening they
were going to take my car.
We just want your car, she recalls one
of the men repeatedly saying as he pointed
a firearm at her.
He grabbed her car keys from her hand
from where she was standing next to the
drivers side.
She says the man forced her towards the
back door which he was trying to open.
The second man was already inside the
car.
She, however, resisted.
No!, I screamed,as Ipushedhimoffme,
recalls Kruger.
The man grabbed her sports bag from her
which contained her dance clothes and cell-
phone.
Before managing to free herself and run-
ning towards the house, Kruger remembers
seeinga thirdmanwalking through thegate.
As I shouted at my landlady and banged
against the door, I heard them starting the
car and drive away, she says.
Tamaryn describes her attackers as dark
in complexion, of medium build and speak-
ing English with an accent. The firearm
looked like a homemade shotgun and she re-
calls one of themenwearing a red fleecy top.
I always considered myself streetwise,
but now I realise how vulnerable I am.
According to police spokesperson Sgt Su-
zan Jantjies the metallic silver Hyundai i20
with registration CFM 28090 has not been
found yet.
A case of robbery and car theft is being
investigated.
Anyone who can aid the investigation
can phone Detective WO Deon Klaasen
on 021 851 1331.

horst, co-owner of the Vergelegen

Badenhorst says he was on his

ing a boxwith feathers sticking out.
When he went to investigate this
odd-looking box, he saw the Jackal
Buzzard chick inside the box. He
queried themanwith the box about
where he found the buzzard, but on-
ly received evasive answers.
Badenhorst decided then and
there to confiscate the chick from
the man and phoned the SPCA. Ea-
gle Encounters was notified and
came to collect the bird.
Hank Chalmers, owner of Eagle
Encounters at Spier, says the bird
was very thin and underfed when
they received it. He says it seems
that the chick was fed porridge,
which is not an appropriate diet for
birds of prey. Chalmers says the
buzzard is back on a healthy diet of
rodents and is putting on some
weight.
He, however, points out that it
will be difficult to rehabilitate the
chick, as it is already very tame. He
suspects that the buzzard chickwas
in captivity for only about a week,
but showsno fear of humans,which
complicates his rehabilitation.
Chalmers says the primary goal
of Eagle Encounters is to rehabili-
tate birds of prey and release them
back into the wild.
Badenhorst says he is relieved
that the chicks condition has im-
provedandaddsthattheVergelegen
Spar has decided to sponsor the
chick.

Safetyupgradeof rail line
DALEEN FOUCH
The notorious railway line in Bridgewa-
ter, SomersetWestwhereayoungart stu-
dent lost his life in a fatal train accident,
is due for a safety upgrade.
The tragic death of Evans Micah-Boateng,
an art student originally from Ghana on 13
June, sparked action from Metrorail to en-
sure better pedestrian safety.
Metrorail is implementing several safety
precautions along the railway line inBridge-
water at the river bridge and at Van Der Stel
Station.
Riana Scott, spokesperson for Metrorail,
says train drivers were instructed to use the
train sirenwhen approaching the area, espe-
cially in the vicinity of the steel bridge and
the regulatory and warning sign boards to
inform communitymembers to keep clear of
the rail reserve were installed.
Scott says signage was present at the steel
bridge, but claim that it was removed by a
local residentwhomade a request for a boom
to be installed. Scott, however, says a boom
is not justifiable as it is not an official cross-
ing. It would not offer protection if the prac-
tice of individuals jogging with earphones
jumping over the fence on the other side of
the line continues.
Scott says a fence, to demarcate the rail
boundary, will be put up from the bridge and
extended to the nearest water course. She
sayseventually the fencingwillgoall theway
to Van Der Stel Station. She says this project
will have to be prioritised in relation to all
regional fencing requirements. The region
spends between R6 m and R9 m per year to
mend and replace broken fencing.
We are saddened by the untimely demise
ofEvansBoateng.Wetrust that thissenseless
and entirely preventable tragedy will serve
asareminder tokeepclearof therailway line
it is not an official railway crossing and
should not be used as such.
Scott further says that it is with concern
that she notes a formalised pathway leading
to the railway line and the bridge was made.
There is also an onus on the public to en-
sure theirownsafety throughresponsiblebe-
haviour.
Metrorail warns pedestrians not to use this steel bridge, as it is not an official pedestrian
crossing.

The strikers thenbecamemore in-
sistent and said that if she did not
dance with them, she would not be
allowed to take any photos of them.
So, because theDistrictMail need-
ed the photo for this weeks edition,
the journalist agreed to dance with
the strikers.
While dancingwith them for a few
minutes andmanaging to take a few
photos of them while she was danc-
ing, the strikers toldher shehad tak-
en enough photos and had to leave.
However,before leavingoneof the
women who was striking told the
journalist she liked her skirt and
that she has to give it to her now!
Thats when the journalist made
a hasty departure while closely
watched by a security company
monitoring the situation.

Congratulationsona
jobwell done
I would just like to thank Helderberg
Crime Watch/Vetus Schola for their
rapid response and decisive action in
dealing with thieves in Round Hay,
Somerset West on Thursday afternoon,
17 July.
Alert neighbours saw the thieves car-
ryinga cast ironbath,whichwasproba-
bly being used as a garden decoration,
down Van Zyl Street.
They immediately contacted HCW/
Vetus Schola and reported what was
happening.
Within a few minutes an armed re-
sponsevehicle and twosecurity officers
were on the scene and apprehended the
criminals.
It is very reassuring knowing that we
have such efficient and effective securi-
ty companies who respond to calls for
help, no matter how trivial they may
seem, so quickly.
Thank you and please keep up the
good work.

Molly, the beloved family dog of the
Van den Berg family went missing on 7
July in the Parel Vallei area.

An extensive Facebook campaign was
launched and several search parties
have scoured the Helderberg for Molly.
Van den Berg says she drove around lo-
cal townships to look for her, but found
nothing.
Molly is just over a year and ahalf and
is spayed. She was wearing a red collar
at the time of her disappearance. The
van den Berg family is offering a R3 000
reward for her safe return.
If you have any information about
Mollys whereabouts, phone Van den
Berg on 082 738 0811. Molly, the missing Ridgeback.
