The inspiring lifeofDonWesselsTAMSYN JANTJIES

The start of a new year of-ten brings with it newhope and dreams, as wellas the knowledge that no-one knows the challengesof the next 365 days.

As the clock strikes 00:00every 1 January, most peo-ple make resolutions to tack-le the new year with vigourand be positive all-yearround – although these areoften lost by the wayside asthe year progresses.

Meet Don Wessels fromSomerset West – a man whowas given a second chanceat lifeandwhohasundertak-en to live his entire life witha constant verve.

In his 44-year life, he hasovercome many hurdles andlives by the mantra of livinghis life to the fullest.

At the young age of 19, helost both his hands and eyesin a devastating explosion while serving inthe army. Don and his troops were investigat-ing the wreck of a reconnaissance plane inAngola in 1989. But there was a pitfall.

Don’s commander threw a disk-like objectto him. After he tampered with the device, itexploded in his face.

Three hours later a rescue team finallyreached the wreck and transported Don to alocal hospital, where he was stabilised. Oncetransported to a South African military hos-pital, he received the devastating news of theforced amputation of both his hands and re-moval of his eyes.

Since then, the father of three has been de-

termined to tackle every obstacle in his wayand live a normal lifestyle – despite goingthrough a patch of post traumatic stress.

“I have always been a very positive personandIhaveneverallowedanyhurdleorpersondetermefrommycourse,” theavid fishermansays.

“I believe if you don’t throw out a line, ev-erything in life will pass you by. Many peoplesee me as a walking motivation.”

Don mostly draws inspira-tion from his three sons, Mat-teo (7), Francois (5) and Gido(3). “Since thebirthofmychil-dren, I feel less disabled. I amlike any other father; I wantthem to enjoy their childhoodand do things any other childwould do,” he explains.

The professional motiva-tional speaker, who holds adoctorate in political studies, often uses humour during hispresentations. Anecdotes andstories from occurrences inhis life end up being motiva-tional lessons for those at-tending his talks. “I like doingthings for others; that’s justmy way of doing it. I believepeople need constant motiva-tion to reach their full poten-tial,” Don says.

Apart from working as amotivational speaker, he also works in theproperty industry and is very self-sufficient.

A specially made computer allows him toaccomplish all his assigned tasks, while healso boasts a typing rate of any average per-son. The computer’s keyboard has large but-tons for typing and has a voice programmethat reads out what is typed.

But his life achievements thus far are notDon’s ultimate goal. “I would like to enrol foranother course in politics in the near future,”he tells DistrictMail.

“I love open spaces and the freedom it hasto offer, so I hope to one day live a peacefullife on a farm.”

‘Geenorde inMacassar;menseniebangvir polisie’

Respekteer mekaar se geloof; moenie me-kaar kritiseer of jou geloof op ander afdwingnie.

Liveoutsideyourselfthis year

At the start of each new year, resolu-tions are drawn up – we undertaketo quit smoking, lose weight, join agym or live a healthier lifestyle.

But a couple of weeks after thesevows are made, they recede intomemory.

Instead of the usual resolutionsthis year, why not decide to get in-volved in your community to makea difference?

Join the neighbourhood watch, start a feeding scheme, coach a ju-nior soccer team or attend commu-nity meetings to highlight concerns.

So much more can be achieved ifeveryone joins hands.

Thanks for caringaboutourdogs, but...

I am pre-empting a possible reportabout us leaving our dogs in the carat the Virgin Active car park on Satur-day 3 January at about 12:00.

It was a mild cloudy day, but the carwas nevertheless parked under a tree.Three of the four windows had been leftpartially open, two at about 60 mm andone at about 120 mm.

The car was left unlocked. When we returned from shopping 20

minutes later, the car guard reportedthat when our parking neighbours re-turned to their vehicle, our dogs beganbarking, as they do when they feel theyneed to protect their master’s posses-sions.

These people apparently thought thedogs were barking because they hadbeen locked in the car!

They then proceeded to note downour licence plate number and involvedthe car guard in their observation, say-ing they were going to report us.

On our return the dogs were sittingquietly, as they always do when wait-ing for us – except when somebodycomes near our car!

We appreciate our “parking lotneighbours” being concerned aboutour dogs’ welfare, but we would liketo assure them that we would neverleave our dogs in the car without openwindows, nor would we leave them inthe car if it were a hot day.

But we thank them for caring.MARIE OGIELA

Locals aboutholiday visitors

Many locals avoid beaches during the festiveseason. It’s just anunpleasant battle for spaceon the roads and beaches, they feel.On the other hand, there’s no better signal

that it’s holiday season than when a line ofcars moving slowly down Beach Road beltsout the latesthits throughopenwindows.Andthe monetary injection is also welcome. We spoke to some locals for their views.

ZABIAN SWARTS(Strand): Visitors tothe area are goodfor tourism and theeconomy. However, there should bemore control, aspeople bring theirown food and –sometimes – weapons as well. Thevisitors create a festive atmosphere; Ifeel like a differentperson during thisseason. PHOTOS: TAS-MIN CUPIDO

PHIRDOUZE TELHO(Strand): On NewYear’s Day, the trainswere really full; itwas very scary. Iworked at a store inSomerset Mall overthe holiday period,so I saw a definiteincrease in shoppersduring this time.

FANIE KRUGER(Strand): The festiveseason was fine;there were not asmany visitors as inprevious years. Ithink the wind blewpeople away. I believe somethingshould be done tocontrol the use of alcohol on beaches, aspeople do not watchtheir children whenthey are intoxicated.

NICHOLAS GILBERT(Gordon’s Bay): People who visit the area often bring theirown food and donot support localbusinesses. Localsprefer to remain intheir homes, becausevisitors occupy thearea. The number ofvisitors to the beachshould be regulated,so that it is not sopacked. As a business owner, I noticedpeople only enteredwhen they needed touse the bathroom facilities and ended upleaving it in a mess.

CHRISNA OTTO(Gordonsbaai): Ditwas ’n besige Kersseisoen.

DEIDRE VAN DERMERWE (SomersetWes): Dit was chaoties, maar stiller asvorige jare.

Amessage to town leadersNew Year’s Day – what a lovelyday it was; what a ghastly day itwas.Pleasedon’treadanythinginto

the following words other thanwhat is written and don’t readthis as a blow to our lawmen.Theydowhatevertheycanunderthe given circumstances. Now that we have experienced

another “filthy” New Year’s Dayin our beautiful dorp – for theumpteenth time – we must nowact. Elected managers of ourtown, hear this and listen good.Be proactive. We have seen so many times

that handling any kind of situa-tion reactively results in a lose-lose situation. Therefore, beingreactive does not work. Now it istimetobeproactive.Andtheonlyway it will work next time, is bygetting the following in place:

) Determine the number of le-gal parkingbays inBeachandDeBeers Roads, as well as the littleconnecting roads. That is thenumberofvehiclesthatcanbeac-commodated; the rest is overflowand shouldbe shownaway.Havestrategic booms set up with law-menhandling the flow.Thismes-sage needs to be advertisedmonths before a New Year’s Daytopreventanypointofuncertain-ty. First come; first served.

)A parking space in any ofsaidallocatedparkingareasneedto be priced per car to generateadditional income to cover thecosts of cleaning up the beachgo-ers’ filth afterwards. Payment

can be made when entering at aboom.

) Enforce a ban on all busesand taxis, except in two strategicplaces, such as the golf courseand station. [These can become]drop-offplacesandbusesandtax-is need to vacate to a pre-deter-mined parking area such as aschool groundormunicipal openspace.

)A smaller fee per adult, pay-able at the station by train usersand the bus drop-off zones, mustbe raised before any individualis allowed on the beach.

) Camping and enjoying thedaywillberestrictedtothebeach– the white sand and grass areasalong the seaside of Beach Roadonly.Having just these five rules in

place will put authorities in aproactive position to monitor, police and create an environ-mentforeveryonetoenjoyawon-derful beach day. It will free upthe congestion, minimalise thefilth and keep beachgoers on thebeach–andoutofanyprivateres-idence driveways and off pave-ments.Please elected officials in

charge of our dorp, we are fed-upwith the unacceptable fiascoyear after year. If you cannot getit right, appoint someone whocan, but just do it. Be the mana-gers you were elected to be.Iamlookingforwardtoalovely

TOUCHRUGBYSERIES:H’BERG’S SCORE LIVING LEGENDSMAKE IT TWO INA ROW

Teamrewrites TouchieshistoryThe Helderberg based Score Liv-ing Legends rugby team madetouch rugby history in Decemberwhen they lifted the National AllGoldHotSummerofTouchrugbytournament trophy for the sec-ond consecutive year.

No other team in the history ofthis popular touch rugby tourna-ment has ever managed to achievethis impressive feat.

This is especiallypleasing for thisteam, manyofwhomtravelledintheback of a bakkie to participate inthis event in 2008. That year theplayers did not have a sponsor andhad to camp in a tent near the differ-ent venues and used their prizemoney, gleaned from winning dif-ferent stages, to buy food.

The following year the team re-ceived a sponsorship and went onto win the tournament.

Manager/coachNigel Phillips be-lieves touch rugby has really gonefromstrength to strength in theHel-derberg, as six of the top teams com-peting in this year’s tournamentwere from the area. These teamsare: Score Living Legends, Reds,Dwergies, Pacific Blue, Hawaiiansand the Drifters.

The tournament kicked off inCampsBayon14Decemberandend-ed on 31 December in Hartenbos.

The Score Living Legends wonfive of the seven legs of the tourna-ment and played in two semi-finals.

Their road to the title was as fol-lows: 14 December – Camps Bay(semi-finals), 16 December – Strand(winners), 21 December – OnrusBeach (winners), 23December Stru-isbaai (semi-finals), 26 December –

Stilbaai (winners), 29 December –DiazBeach (winners)and31Decem-ber – Hartenbos (winners).

Phillips says the superb captain-cy and leadership of Fabian Philan-der kept the team focussed during

all seven stages of the event. He adds that thehardwork, many

hours of practise and dedication byall the team members led to theirsuccess.

He further thanks everyone whohelped inpreparing the team for thetournament, especially Morne Ad-ams, Armien Bailey and sponsorsScore Energy Drink, Le Roux Con-radie and former international ten-nis star Björn Borg for their unfail-ing support.

As a result of the team’s success,Phillips says, they plan to partici-pate in a number of Sevens tourna-ments around the Cape this seasonto see how they will fare.

The Score Living Legends teammembers are: Fabian Philander,Patrick van Wyk, Nazeem Wood,Harry Fingers, Christopher Jo-sephs, Michael la Meyer, FrancoOktober (all fromStGeorges), Brad-ley Mentoor (Helderberg RFC),Nannie Latief (Strand Secondary),Zandé de Klerk (no club), and Ash-will Gordon (Springbok TouchRug-by player).
