ENOTURISMO

WINE TOURISM

Although wine tourism may seem like a relatively innovative form of tourism, in reality, at the start of the 20th century in the El Penedès region, our ancestors were in fact already visiting wine cellars using a sprung cart that connected the railway station with the winery. Another widespread custom consisted of going to wine cellars on public holidays and, as long as you bought products from them, you were allowed to cook and eat the food you had brought with you from home on their premises.

Today, all this forms part of the collective memory, and numerous wine cellars offer guided tours, not only in order to allow visitors to get to know their products, but also to let them become familiar with the world of wine and cava. Whether you love good wines, or just want to learn more about them, you will already know that in the province of Barcelona there are five Denominations of Origin: Penedès, Alella, Pla de Bages, Catalunya and Cava. High quality wines and cava are produced in all five, and the architectural style of some of the wine cellars is extraordinary. Several are housed in Catalan Art Nouveau buildings dating from the beginning of last century, whilst others are located in avant-garde structures designed by prestigious architects.

And, if this weren’t enough, some establishments, whether they be rural tourist accom-modation or hotels in wineries, offer programmes that allow visitors to experience work in the vineyards, enjoy the benefits of vinotherapy, or simply participate in wine tasting and food and wine pairing, where wine plays the leading role. And all this just a stone’s throw from the city of Barcelona.

All the above, as well as the many other activities such as signposted hiking and cy-cling trails through the vineyards mean that Barcelona is much more: it’s an altogether amazing destination!

EL ENOTURISMO,UNA FORMA DISTINTA DE TURISMO

WINE TOURISM,A DIFFERENT FORM OF TOURISM

Vines grow in open areas and can all by themselves create an outstanding landscape, which changes with the seasons. In winter, the vines are dormant and the wine growers’ work involves pruning the vines and oxygenating the earth; in spring the first shoots start to appear, these need to be cut back leaving only the strongest ones; in summer the leaves produce a wonderful green colour in the vineyards where the vines are trained using either the goblet or the espalier system; at the end of the summer and start of the autumn, the activity in the vineyards and the wine cellars becomes frenetic, it is time for the grape harvest. Once peace has returned to the vineyards, the vines create a wonderful display: the spectacular autumn colour of their leaves before they are shed.

Interestingly, the life cycle of the vines is also linked to gastro-nomy and festivities. If you visit one of the areas with a Deno-mination of Origin within the province of Barcelona towards the end of the summer, you may come across festivities linked to a successful grape harvest. In winter, the vine cuttings are used as fuel for grilling calçots (the long shoots of large leek-like spring onions) or artichokes together with meat.

Whichever season you choose, nature is sure to find a way of rewarding you!

Page 4: Discover the Wine Tourism

Situated between the Catalan Pre-coastal Range and the Mediterranean coast, the influence of both sun and the sea breezes make this area ideal for wine growing. This is a terrain characterised by gentle hills, where there are a large number of microclimates. We can identify three clearly differentiated zones, which make up the DO: the Upper Penedès, near the Catalan Pre-coastal Range, the Lower Penedès, next to the sea and the Catalan Coastal Range and the Central Penedès lying between these two areas.

Xarel·lo is the most widely planted grape variety in the Penedès DO. It adapts well to the terroir and the climate of this zone, and its ubiquitous presence is therefore one the area’s most distin-guishing features. If you try the elixir extracted from this grape, you will enjoy young wines with a silky yet full-bodied character, good acidity, fruity, aromatic and with an excellent alcohol content, as well as consistent, warm, long crianza wines, with a mineral finish and a marked varietal character.

This area stretches out over the regions of El Maresme andEl Vallès Oriental, 15 km north of the city of Barcelona and is one of the smallest and oldest DOs in the Iberian Peninsula. The fact that this is not a large area has lead to its wineries producing a small volume of high quality wine. In addition to the white wines known historically as the wines of the Barcelona middle class, there are also red, rosé, sweet and sparkling wines, which, alongside the fantastic cavas also produced here, make up over 90 references from small and exclusive productions.

Eight wineries and just over 300 ha of vines, most practising organic agriculture, where the Pansa Blanca variety plays the starring role, make up this small, urban Denomination of Origin, which boasts spectacular landscapes. Its proximity to Barce-lona means you can visit all the wineries in one day. Some of them are built in the Catalan Art Nouveau style while others have a bolder design. You can also discover the monumental heritage of towns such as Alella, visit the Roman Vallmora wine cellar in Teià or go enjoy a walk in the Serralada Litoral Natural Park, amid pleasant landscapes in which vines and Mediterra-nean forests predominate.

The natural power of the earth its fullest expression in this Denomination of Origin from the region of El Bages, in central Catalonia. This region has an important geological heritage and was recently awarded the status of Central Catalonia Global GEOPARK by the Global Geoparks Network supported by UNESCO. The grapes from which the DO Pla de Bages wine is made are grown in vineyards spread out over moun-tainous formations such as the mountain of Montserrat, the Castelltallat and Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac ranges, and the Montcau massif. Some of these formations have been de-clared natural parks. Therefore, this entire region is of great importance, not only for its wines, but also for the protection of its landscapes.

If you like fruity white wines, with a fresh aroma and marked personality, you really must visit this region. The native variety of grape that is predominantly found in the 550 ha of this DO is Picapoll. This is the only part of Spain where it is grown. The resulting wine can be sampled in any of the twelve wineries within the DO Pla de Bages.

Cava is a drink synonymous with celebrations, and its con-sumption – widespread in Catalonia – spread rapidly to the rest of Europe and across the entire globe. The Cava DO covers virtually the whole of the region of L’Alt Penedès, where 95% of the Spain’s cava is produced.

Many events linked to cava are organised over the course of the year. It would be very unusual if your visit to this region, whose capital is Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, did not coincide with one of them. Visit a winery and go underground to see how the bubbles are produced. As a reward, you will be able to taste this elixir, whose production is enveloped in mystery. Some of the wine cellars are built in a Catalan Art Nouveau style, some are more avant-garde, and others are small family farmhouses, which make cava of extraordinary quality. Search and select the wineries you want to visit, using the Internet portal, or simply by following the signposts along the region’s roads.

If you want to learn more about the world of wine and cava, there are two interpretation centres and museums where you can expand your knowledge and discover a large number of interesting related anecdotes. Since these centres and mu-seums are situated in towns within each of the Denominations of Origin, your visit will enable you to learn the theory, before you go on to see how it is put into practice in the local wine and cava production.

VINSEUM (Museum of the Wine Cultures of Catalonia)is situated in the centre of Vilafranca del Penedès. Here you can embark on a journey through the history of wine from its origins to the present day and from the vineyard to the senso-rial explosion of wine tasting.

The relationship between the Barcelona coast and the Ca-ribbean is quite evident. During the 19th century, many families emigrated in search of a better life. Those who returned after making their fortune – los indianos (the Indians) – built beautiful mansions and set up businesses, some related to what they had learnt in ‘the Americas’. This was the case of Facundo Bacardí Massó and the Casa Bacardí, located in the Old Market in Sitges, which reveals the links with Puerto Rico and Bacardí rum.

During the 18th century, the Malvasia variety comprised a quarter of the grapes grown within the Sitges municipal area. Malvasia, the sweet wine produced from the grape variety of the same name, later almost died out. Today however, it is still produ-ced in the former Sant Joan Baptista Hospital in Sitges, thanks to the legacy of the benefactor, Manuel Llopis i Bofill.

In Teià, a town near Alella, evidence has been found showing that the Romans produced wine, which they exported to various parts of their Empire. The wine press and the lagares in the Vallmora archaeological site can be visited, as can an interpretation centre where we can learn not only about how far the Alella wines dates back but also about the relationship between Romanisation and wine throughout Catalonia.

In Manresa, the capital of El Pla de Bages region, wine was produced at the Casa de la Culla farmhouse until the 19th century. In addition to being the headquarters of the DO Pla de Bages Regulatory Council, this fortified farmhouse now serves as an environmental education school and a place to taste the DO products.

LA ARQUITECTURA EN EL MUNDO DEL VINOEXPERIMENTA CON LOS SENTIDOS. LOS DESTILADOSARCHITECTURE IN THE WORLD OF WINEUSING YOUR 5 SENSES: DISTILLED SPIRITS

It is not only the wine and cava produced in this area that are of great interest to visitors, but also the architecture of the buil-dings related to this industry. In Catalonia, towards the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, with the rise in popularity of the cooperative movement, monumental buildings were erected designed to store and distribute farm produce. Some of them were created specifically for wine production and were therefore designed so that the grape unloading, handling, pressing and fermentation processes as well as the ageing of the wine were both made easy and carried out as efficiently as possible.

Architects of that time such as Cèsar Martinell, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Pere Domènech i Roura and Jeroni Martorell, etc., built what Àngel Guimerà described as real ‘wine cathedrals’. A visit to one of these buildings cannot fail to leave a lasting impression.

Other wine cellars – cellers in Catalan – are housed on family estates, in farmhouses some of which date back to the 15th century, perfectly integrated into their surroundings, forming part of the landscape of each region. Finally, we find wineries built in an avant-garde style, the result of a more creative vision and incorporating new technological processes.

Ratafia is a liqueur made by macerating green walnuts and a variety of aromatic herbs. The Bosch Distilleries have been producing this liqueur in Sant Quirze de Besora (Osona) since 1892. The artisan production, which uses a recipe passed down through several generations and the originality of Ratafia, a typical Catalan liqueur first produced in the Pyrenees, makes a visit to the distilleries very worthwhile.

A visit to the Anís del Mono factory in Badalona will also sur-prise you. Founded in 1869, 140 years later it has become one of the most popular brands in the world. Visitors to this factory, part of which was built in the Catalan Art Nouveau style, can discover many curious facts about the liqueur, such as why the monkey on the label bears the face of Charles Darwin or why the glass of the Anís del Mono bottle is moulded into its distinctive diamond pattern.

In the El Penedès region there are numerous signposted hiking and cycling trails; moreover, this area offers tailor-made acti-vities and packages, a calendar of activities, a guide to various local establishments, visits to discover the historical and cultural heritage and various guided tours. Come and discover the El Penedès region, you will enjoy the wonderful views with the mountain of Montserrat as a backdrop.

From Alella or any of the municipalities within the Alella DO, there is a programme of routes that run through the nearbySerralada Litoral Natural Park. Most of them allow us to disco-ver a gently rolling countryside, with fields surrounded by Me-diterranean woods where a good number of farmhouses still stand, some of which have now been turned into restaurants offering traditional fare. Go for a walk along these trails and enjoy a hearty dish of grilled meat accompanied by potatoes al caliu (ember-baked potatoes).

In the Pla de Bages DO, the itineraries, as well as the vineyard landscapes with their wineries, include barraques (dry stone shelters) and tines (stone wine vats), dating back to the 18th century, when this region was a major wine producer. The shelters are dry stone constructions built by the local farmers to store their equipment or to take refuge in when the weather was bad. The wine vats are made of stone with lime mortar, the inner part being waterproof. They had two inlets and were used for making wine in the vineyard itself, thus avoiding the need to transport the grapes to the winery. It is in the Valls del Montcau (El Montcau valleys) that the largest number of these construc-tions can be found. In recent years, a restoration programme has been carried out to recover many of them.

Although some may think that the world of wine is incompatible with minors, there are many activities that young children and teenagers can enjoy. For example, treading grapes during the grape harvest, the festivals in which the diables del vi (literally ‘wine devils’] dress up and run down the street producing a spectacular display of pyrotechnics as they go, carriage tours through vineyards and theatralised tours.

There is a wide range of accommodation options available, including rural tourist accommodation and hotels in wineries, which offer their guests complementary activities. In addition to taking different routes, visitors can learn about the work carried out in the fields at certain times of the year, or pamper themselves by relaxing body and mind in the hotel spa or perhaps trying out vinotherapy through which they can benefit from the antioxidant properties of grape extract.

FIESTAS, MUESTRASY JORNADAS GASTRONÓMICAS

FESTIVALS, EXHIBITIONS AND SPECIALITY& FINE FOOD FAIRS

Throughout the year, in the five DOs within the province of Barcelona, there are a wide variety of festivals in which wine plays the leading role. In Alella, the Festes de la Verema (Wine harvest festival) take place at the start of September. In addition to music, theatre, parades and activities for young children, there is a wine and fine food exhibition at which the wineries present their new produce, and the restaurants participating in the event invite you to try their gastronomic creations. On buying a ticket, you are given a wine glass and can taste different types of wine or cava in addition to speciality and fine foods.

In the town of Artés in the Pla de Bages DO, the Festa de la Verema is held during the first week of October. In addition to the presentation of each winery’s new products, the festive spirit spreads to the street with shows, the tasting of artisan fare, parades and prizes for conservation work on dry stone shelters and stone wine vats, which form part of the region’s architectural heritage.

Sitges also holds a Wine Harvest Festival at the start of Sep-tember, with grape treading competitions, a wine fountain and an exhibition of wines and fine foods on the Passeig de la Ribera. In addition to the wine, the sea also plays a leading role in this festival.

On the first weekend in September, Sant Sadurní d’Anoia celebrates the Festa de la Fil·loxera (Phylloxera Festival) to commemorate how at the end of the 19th century the town’s inhabitants overcame this terrible insect plague that devas-tated their vines. The real stars of this festival are fire and music. A gigantic effigy that incarnates the wretched insect spouts out fire in all directions.
