August 06, 2017 are assured of Heaven. They just need to be thoroughly purified of the effects of venial sin in order to get to Heaven, because the Book of Revelation says, “Nothing impure will ever enter it” (Rev. 21:27). Purgatory is heaven’s hospital. It is part of God’s mercy. Without Pur-gatory, there will be very few people in Heaven, because very few die in the odor of sanctity - pure and perfect. We must make acts of reparation, penance and mortification for our own sins and those of others, which lead us to the 3rd lesson. 3. The importance of offering up our suffering. Our Lady

asked if they were willing to offer themselves up to God and endure suffering in reparation for the sins with which He is offended and for the conversion of sinners. The seers were very generous in saying yes, and they suffered a lot, but the Blessed Mother as-sured them that the grace of God will be their comfort. We all suffer in one way or other. So suffer physically (illness, debilitating disease, effects of old age)…emotionally (estrangement from family)…spiritually (habitual sins and additions they struggle with). Don’t waste your suffering by complaining about it, ignoring it or enduring it without offering it up. Offering our pain and suffering to God in union with Christ’s sacri-fice on the cross gives our suffering redemptive value, and we can offer it not only for ourselves, but also for others. Remember that God will not allow us to suffer beyond our abilities; He won’t give us anything we cannot handle. He gives us the grace to carry our crosses.

Again, the 3 lessons we learn from the 1st Fatima appari-tion:

The goal of our earthly life is to get to Heaven, so keep your eyes on the goal and do not be dis-tracted.

Purgatory is real, so take sin seriously and make acts of reparation, penance and mortification.

Offer up your daily suffering to God, not only for yourself, but for others as well.

Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us! Saint Francisco and Saint Jacinta, pray for us!

“FINDING FATIMA” Documentary to be shown in the Ave Maria Hall on August 12 at 5:30 P.M. Produced by the award-winning filmmakers of the highly acclaimed feature film The 13th Day, this powerful and in-depth documentary combines archival footage, dramatic reenactments, original interviews with Fatima experts, and stunning visuals to tell the whole story of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. With high production values and a beautiful look, artists and filmmakers Ian and Dominic Higgins present a compelling docu-drama on the cru-cial details about the appearances and messages of Our Lady in Fatima in 1917, a message of prayer, penance and conversion that is desperately needed in our modern world. From the initial apparitions of the angel who prepared the children for Our Lady’s coming, to the Miracle of the Sun, including moving film footage from The 13th Day, this illuminating and inspiring film will impact all those who see it to take heed of the critical mes-sages of Our Lady of Fatima.

Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception Lessons from the First Apparition In my bulletin article last week, I gave a full account of what hap-

pened during the first apparition of Our Lady of Fatima, which took place on May 13, 1917. What lessons can we learn from this first apparition of the Blessed Mother? The topic of Heaven dominated the conversation between Lucia and Our Lady. And rightly so, because the goal of our earthly life is to get to Heaven. It is why God created us. It is why He sent His only Son. It is why Christ suf-fered and died for us on the cross. It is the mission He entrusted to His Church when He sent the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. God wants us to share in the blessedness of His life in Heaven. The Fatima seers were given a glimpse of Heaven with the magnificent vision of the most beautiful Virgin Mother. They were also given a foretaste of Heaven, when the most intense light of God penetrated the d eepest recesses of their souls, making them see themselves clearly in God, and driven by a deep inspira-tion, they fell down on their knees knelt and repeated in-wardly: ‘O Most Holy Trinity, I adore Thee! My God, my God, I love Thee in the most Blessed Sacrament.’ The closest we can ever experience Heaven in this life is through the Blessed Sacrament. So, love Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Visit Him often in the Most Blessed Sa-crament. Participate in Eucharistic Adoration and Bene-diction. And when you receive Him in Holy Communion, let His real presence in the Eucharist penetrate your soul and pray that He may inflame your heart with greater love for Him and a greater desire to be with Him in Heaven. We must keep our eyes on the goal. There are a lot of distractions out there; be discerning of the activities you engage in. Saying many Rosaries can help us get to hea-ven, just as it did St. Francisco of Fatima. We can obtain many wonderful things through the recitation of the Rosa-ry. Our Lady’s last words in this first apparition were, “Pray the Rosary everyday to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war.” 1. Purgatory is real. No one wants to talk about Purga

tory anymore. If you mention Purgatory in a funeral and the necessity of praying for the deceased, some people will get mad at you. Well, Our Lady said Ame-lia (who is presumably a child like the seers) will be in Purgatory until the end of the world. What could have this child done to merit that? That was 1917. In terms of morality and the temptations we face, it is much worse today than it was in 1917. In 1946, when Pope Pius XII visited the United States, he said, “The sin of the century is the loss of a sense of sin.” We must take sin seriously. Unrepented mortal sin leads us to Hell, a vision of which was granted to the chil-dren in the July 13 apparition. Venial sin, if not com-pletely atoned in this life, leads us to Purgatory for further purification. Purgatory is not something we should avoid talking about or thinking about, as if it is bad. It is actually a good thing. Those in Purgatory .

The Sea of Galilee obeyed Your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of the land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy and overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where stormless eternity awaits us. Amen
