MAYAN CEREMONY

A Mayan wedding is a symbolic cer-emony, without any legal aspects in-volved, that brings back the Mayan traditions that unite the bride and groom through the exchange of vows.

The ceremony lasts about 30 minutes and is carried out through chants, shells, flutes, tambourines and drums, surrounded by a mystic aura. A “Shaman”, officiates throughtout.

The scenery can have a few changes but the main essence is the same: honor mother earth through its four elements (earth, wind, fire and wa-ter) and the natural seven directions (up towards cosmic energy; down to-wards mother earth; the four winds, north, south, east, west; and within, in the center of our own hearts, our temples of love).

The altar represents the four cardinal points, filled with flowers, candles and “jícaras” (ancient bowls made from dry pumpkin skin where the “balche” is served, a sacred drink made from tree bark and honey).

Also there is an offering of rice, beans, corn and fruit which the couples ex-change as vows. The groom gives the corn to the bride that symbolizing the beginning of life and the welfare of the family.
