DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVENMISSIE
DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN IS VOORT-DUREND OP ZOEK NAAR EXCELLENTIE EN WIL DE MEEST AUTHENTIEKE, CREATIEVE EN INNOVATIEVE ACADEMIE VAN DE WERELD ZIJN, DIE ALS PROFESSIONELE ORGANISATIE EN ONDERWIJSINSTITUUT TOPONTWERP-TALENT AFLEVERT.
DESIGN ACADEMY EINDHOVEN CONTINUOUSLYSTRIVES FOR EXCELLENCE AND WANTS TO BE THE MOST AUTHENTIC, CREATIVE AND INNOVATIVE PROFESSIONAL ORGANISATION AND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE IN THE WORLD THAT DELIVERS THE BEST DESIGN TALENT.
How can the social relevance of Design Academy Eindhoven designers be further increased? Or in other words, how can the academy play a more important role and take more of a lead in shaping important issues and design challenges in today’s and tomorrow’s world? And what effect will this have on the educational programme? The most notable results from the final report by the LaGroup research agency are:The academy primarily has a very strong positionin the cultural sector, but not really in the commercial, scientific or social sectors. We will focus more on these domains in the future.Three important recommendations are:Less Bubble, More World: the academy should go out into the world and bring it home more.Modify the signature: the academy’s current signature needs changing so that it ties in more with what the academy and the world are really doing.Distinguish the roles of a designer: make a clearer distinction in the variety of roles that designers can fulfil.

OCW GELDEN
Entitled ‘Dutchness’, the presentation for Milan 2009 was notably restrained. On the academy’s invitation, presentations by students from ArtEZ and some businesses, such as Stuffed and Scholten & Baijings, were also included. Thomas Eyck exhibited work by Aldo Bakker and Christien Meindertsma. For the first time in the Netherlands, the Milan Dutchness’ exhibition had a follow-up exhibition entitled ‘NL=Nieuwe Luxe’ (NL=New Luxury), which opened on 24 May 2009 in the NAiM/ Bureau Europa in Maastricht. ‘NL=Nieuwe Luxe’ was open to the public from 25 May until 23 August 2009 and drew 1,550 visitors.

DUTCHNESS IN MILAAN & MAASTRICHT
The annual final exam exhibition, which was held from 17 to 25 October, was an unprecedented success. No fewer than 25,000 visitors made their way to deWitteDame to view work from 15 Bachelor’s and Master’s graduates. Just like last year, Piet Hein Eek and Petra Janssen created the exhibition design. Those graduating were present throughout the exhibition’s opening hours to provide background on their final pieces and to answer questions. Visitors’ feedback indicated that conversations with the students were considered very inspirational, as visitors not only got to see the work, but also the makers.
GRADUATION GALLERIES 2009
The Friendship with Bruns means a great deal to students and has resulted in beautiful products over the last few years. This is due to the fact that Bruns offers students, in consultation with their teachers, the opportunity to develop prototypes made of special material or based on specific requirements. Bruns’s quality is the ability to work with the student to explore the prospects such a product has to offer.
Design Academy Eindhoven’s close relationship with funeral services cooperative DELA provided the opportunity for students from the Man and Well Being design department to carry out a research project. Over the course of five months, they gave their full attention to the question of How do you want to be remembered?”. The publication and the travelling exhibition for Herinner Me’ (Remember Me) showcased the outcome of 20 weeks of research and analysis resulting in a variety of original visions, designs and products.

With the completion of the New European Identities (NEiD) project as well as the European Textile Trainees (ETT) project, the academy has strengthened its international relations and its collaboration in the fields of textile education, research and production. The focus on textiles underlines the opportunities available to the academy and the need for the business sector to find better ways of connecting with conceptual designers. The role of the designer is changing and the manufacturing industry needs new relationships and new knowledge. As a result of both projects, the academy launched a textile pilot in 2009 within Man and Identity and a joint module on textiles is being put together with the Aalto University of Art and Design in Helsinki. The Man and Identity design department and department coordinator Saskia van Gelder in particular are very actively involved in these developments. To be continued in 2010! For those of you who would like to know more about NEiD and ETT, there are project catalogues at reception for your perusal.
TEXTIEL KRIJGT IN 2009 BIJZONDERE AANDACHT
Are there things that we can still learn from top designer Mother Nature or do we need to look for new design challenges in biotechnology, for example? How are things in the evolutionary development of creativity and what does cultivated meat actually taste like? Within the context of the Year of Darwin and the Day of Sustainability, Design Academy Eindhoven organised a two-day seminar on 8 and 9 September, the agenda for which included (r)evolutionary development in the fields of nature, culture and design. Speakers of (inter)national allure challenged 750 students, tutors, staff and friends of the academy to investigate the finger-, foot- and foodprints.
At the beginning of the 2009–2010 academic year, the Town & Country lectorate for Man and Public Space began with David Hamers as lecturer. Topics within the lectorate that played an important role included the development of the European town, the town in the country, the country in the town, routes and routines, living and habits, people and events, quick and slow, and beauty and mortality. For this lectorate, an agreement was signed with the municipality of Eindhoven, with which the department has built up a special bond thanks to student projects over the last few years.
STAD & LAND, LECTORAAT MAN AND PUBLIC SPACE
Research carried out by IM Masters students in 2009 varied both in subject matter and in methodology. By working within the context of changing subjects every term, the first-year students each developed their own approach to the subject. The students devised scenarios for Philips in which a still nonexistent light technology could be implemented. Second-year students worked on their graduation projects independently and were supported by one or more mentors. The appreciation of conceptual design thinking is reflected in the prizes and the press the graduates received. Various leading trade journals published the graduation projects, which, in addition, were exhibited in a few prestigious galleries or included in international conferences. All in all, 2009 was a year in which students pushed the boundaries of the field of design and questioned the meaning of their role within a wider social context.
The government is greatly interested in the development of a strong creative industry and, for that reason, has set aside a part of the natural gas revenues, the so-called FES funds. Given its close relationship with the creative industry, Design Academy Eindhoven has been asked to contribute to strengthening that position. Together with the 3 Universities of Technology, and both universities in Amsterdam – UvA and VU – the academy has prepared a request to forge a link between science and the creative industry. What is particularly worth noting in the academy’s contribution is the introduction of so-called research associates, i.e. designers and alumni who are being placed in short (one-year) result-based research programmes in close co-operation with businesses or social bodies. With this designer-researcher role, the academy is creating a unique opportunity to acquire experience and to give design research a significant boost.
In his role as the Head of the Market Faculty, Walter Amerika joined a Ministry of Economic Affairs trade delegation to Hong Kong. The Dutch delegation at Business of Design Week’ (BoDW) Hong Kong was part of a long-term, strategic collaboration between the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the creative sector that aims to conquer the Chinese market. The Netherlands chose ‘Open Minds’ as its motto for BoDW, which characterised the unique qualities of Dutch designers and their designs. In addition to a large Holland pavilion, which served as a meet- ing point for designers and entrepreneurs, there was an exhibition of the Dutch Design Awards in which Christien Meindertsma’s book PIG 05049 was featured. Walter Amerika also participated in a public debate including Delft University of Technology regarding the pros and cons of a merger between TU Delft and DAE, the conclusion of which was that collaboration pays off, but a merger now would not provide any substantial additional value for DAE especially. With its 50,000 visitors, BoDW Hong Kong is one of the largest design events in the world.

The academy owes its international character in particular to the number and type of international students who have chosen to study in Eindhoven rather than study in their home country or in another country. 30% of regular students are from abroad, 11% of whom are from within the EU and 19% are from outside the EU. 95% of the Master’s students are from abroad. The average percentage of international students is 14%. During the year under review, 25 exchange students spent a semester studying at the academydivided among the eight design departments in the Bachelor’s degree programme.
