definition of portfolio
A portfolio is a purposeful collection of an individual’s work that
exhibits his or her efforts, progress and achievements in one or
more areas. The collection must include the individual’s
participation in selecting contents, the criteria for selection; the
criteria for judging merit, and evidence of individual self-
reflection.

definition of e-portfolio
The e-portfolio is an electronic tool to portray the users skills,
knowledge, attitudes and behaviours that she / he is acquiring in
day-to-day experiences. This could be experience gained from
totally different learning domains at different stages of life e.g. at
home, at work, during leisure time activities, honorary post etc.
These artefacts / evidences can be presented in diverse media
types e.g. samples of writing as texts like evaluations or letters of
commendation of supervisors, employers or peers, sound,
graphic, video, photographs files.

Creating an e-portfolio is also an excellent tool for portraying the
self-managed learning process and development for the
acquisition of key-skills. The user is able to reach a knowledge
about her / his own diverse learning processes and contexts and
the competences which arise from them. It is this awareness
process which is key for the user. In some cases, people are not
at all aware of being in possession of certain competences. But
this knowing about one’s own strong and weak points is crucial
when dealing with self-orientation. Here the development of an e-
portfolio helps to support and valorise the self-managed learning
process. The user will be aware of her / his general competences
and skills.

types of e-portfolios
You can develop a learning e-portfolio, an assessment e-portfolio
and an employment portfolio. The learning portfolio is a collection
of documents in order to reflect the owner’s learning which is
quite interesting for pupils and students. The assessment e-
portfolio is focused on documenting material in order to portray
achieved standards. It is a useful instrument for managing the
one’s own human resources in relation to career planning like
promotions. The employment e-portfolio is a design to represent
all work-related documents important for the hiring process.

added-value of creating an e-portfolio
Reflection:
Choosing adequate pieces to put into an e-portfolio is connected with self-reflection. You have to reflect on yourself, on your education and work experiences. You are encouraged to be reflective throughout the entire portfolio process. New meaning and assessment will arise from this reflection which is quite important when positioning yourself in work environments.

added-value of creating an e-portfolioSelf-assessment:
The creator of an e-portfolio is constantly forced to revisit and refine the material which documents the own competences and experiences. The effect of this is a constant self-assessment.
Skill development:
While creating an e-portfolio the user has to develop certain information and communication technology skills to be able to use the right tools. But also other general skills / key skills such as written communication skills in the mother tongue and in a second language (mostly English) will be trained. Cultural awareness skills will be enhanced because the user has to take into account the effects on the reader.

informal learning process
The e-portfolio approach can be seen as a construction process: The individual is able to construct her / his own informal learning process by recording, interpreting and evaluating her / his own knowledge. With the e-portfolio tool the user becomes an actor of knowledge management. She / he is no longer only the recipient. All naturally occurring informal and non-formal learning opportunities at work, in social activities, at home, in libraries, clubs or museums, etc. should be documented on an e-portfolio. In this way the informal learning aspect in the process of the life long learning will be ideally portrayed.

building-up an e-portfolio
Before starting to collect relevant documents you should ask yourself the question what you would like to achieve with your e-portfolio. Because the format of an e-portfolio depends on this answer.

1. Selection of material is key in order to appropriately portray yourself and your competencies. And do not forget: It is also your identity which will be presented.
2. Structure of the selected material has to be organised. This means the e-portfolio structure should be exhaustive and creative in its presentation. And the structure should fit for the purpose that you intend.
3. Representative documents should build up the scope of your competences and work.

In general the e-portfolio should be well-prepared and provide the recipient with the right evidence of your accomplishments, skills and abilities in order to testify the quality of your competences.
