Here I am with violinist Selena Choi and guest artist, sheng player Loo Sze-wang, before RTHK Quartet’s recording session. It’s the Quartet’s first appearance on a CD! This year is the Quartet’s 5th Anniversary, and incidentally, Radio 4’s 40th Anniversary. Most appropriately, the Quartet appears on a track in this special album, which will be released at Christmas. Watch out for more details in next month’s FM.

You may like to know that the Quartet’s next performance will be on 16 December at 8pm. They will play the first movement from Beethoven’s String Quartet, Op.132. An adventurous work in the programme will be the world premiere by Samson Young for sheng and string quartet. In this unusual piece, Loo Sze-wang will play with electronic sensors sticking on his body! You can also hear Chan Hing-yan’s As the Wind Goes By, for sheng and string quartet, which will appear on the anniversary CD.

The free concert will take place at City University of Hong Kong’s Multimedia Theatre (M1060) and is open to all.

Celebrating another anniversary, Radio 4’s annual festive offering, the Christmas Concert in the Park, will have its 10th birthday.

The idea of putting up an outdoor concert on Christmas Eve was conceived in early 2005. Handel’s Messiah was the obvious choice, and we presented Part One from the oratorio, with addition of the famous Hallelujah Chorus. The audience was invited to sing along to a newly-composed Christmas Medley. All that, plus the fireworks at the end of the concert brought overwhelming response. And the show has gone on for ten glorious years.

Over the years, there have been different themes, with Messiah being a recurring subject. There has never been a Christmas Concert without the Hallelujah Chorus. In 2009, when the ‘Christmas Concert in the Park’ celebrated its 5th Anniversary, we presented highlights from all three parts of Handel’s masterpiece. Looking ahead, the 10th Anniversary will spotlight Messiah again. This time, it’s a rarely-performed version arranged by Mozart and we will present Part One. You will again be invited to sing to the Christmas Medley, which is a new arrangement on the original 2005 version of the piece created by the British composer Bill Connor.

We will return to Hong Kong Park where we have staged the concert eight times before. Since there is only space for a few hundred music lovers at the cozy venue, we have decided to open the dress rehearsal at 1:30 pm. It will be a full run-through, so you won’t miss a note. In case you can’t be there in person at the open rehearsal or the main performance, you can hear our holiday offering on Radio 4, RTHK TV 31, or our website.

拉奏小提琴的蔡芷穎和客席樂手吹奏笙的盧思泓,正預備為香港電台弦樂四重奏錄音。這是四重奏第一次亮相於CD中!今年是四重奏成立五週年,同時第四台亦慶祝四十週年,因此在這張四十週年紀念專輯中,當然少不了他們的參與。紀念專輯將於聖誕節推出,詳情請留意下期《美樂集》。

很高興告訴你,香港電台弦樂四重奏在12月16日晚上8時將再有演出,其中會演奏貝多芬的弦樂四重奏,作品132的第一樂章。另有兩首現代作品 ─ 楊家輝的世界首演作品是為笙和弦樂四重奏而寫,亦是一首有趣的跨媒體創作,其中吹奏笙的盧思泓須在身上配帶電子感應器。你亦可以欣賞到陳慶恩的《好風過處》,這首樂曲亦將出現於第四台四十週年的專輯中。

音樂會於香港城市大學多媒體劇場 (M1060) 舉行,費用全免,歡迎大家到場欣賞。

今年,第四台可說是喜事重重。我們的聖誕園林音樂會已舉辦至第十年。2005年初我們構思在平安夜安排一場戶外音樂會,韓德爾的《彌賽亞》成為必然之選。結果,那一年我們送上該神劇的第一部份,以及家傳戶曉的〈哈利路亞〉大合唱。我們更邀請觀眾在《聖誕套曲》中引吭高歌,並在璀璨的煙花中作結,自此亦一年一年的舉辦至今⋯⋯

雖 然 多 年 來 我 們 有 著 不 同 的 主 題 , 但 《 彌 賽 亞 》 確 實 是 半 個 主角。音樂會的常客必定留意到,每年總少不了〈哈利路亞〉大合唱。2009年,「聖誕園林音樂會」慶祝五週年,我們送上《彌賽亞的故事》,從神劇的三部份中帶來精選片段。十週年在即,依然是《彌賽亞》,不過是較少欣賞到由莫扎特改編的版本。我們將再次演出第一部份,亦有《聖誕套曲》的原作者,英國作曲家康納特為音樂會帶來《聖誕套曲》的復刻版。

今年,我們將重返已舉行過八次「聖誕園林音樂會」的香港公園。這表演場地讓觀眾感到親密,可惜只能容納幾百位樂迷,因此我們決定公開在1時30分舉行的最後綵排。你可以選擇提早到場,觀賞這個足本排練演出。但如果你未能出席公開綵排或是正式演出的話,請萬勿錯過第四台、港台電視31及香港電台網上廣播站的轉播和重溫。

The two-days of the ‘Music Beyond Borders’ concerts were attended by thousands, in the sunshine by Victoria Harbour, on 1 & 2 November, at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza C. The concerts were once again part of Hong Kong’s biennial ‘New Vision Arts Festival’. Two innovative jazz trios took to the stage - the David Helbock Trio from Austria and the Gavino Murgia Mediterranean Trio from Italy.

The David Helbock Trio was up first and wowed the crowd with unstoppable music from pianist David Helbock.

His trio played a captivating set. David, in his signature piano-key cap, with trio members Herbert Pirker (drums) and Raphael Preuschl (bass-ukulele) presented a set full of contrasts – from beautifully sophisticated jazz sounds to some high-energy moments. Along with David’s own compositions, the trio paid tributes to Hermeto Pascoal (with a definitive Brazilian flavour) and jazz great Thelonious Monk. The trio played Down For the Count by NY jazz pianist Peter Madsen (David Helbock’s teacher, mentor and friend) and, among the trio’s many musical explorations from all over the world, came an arrangement of an Austrian folk song Apple You are So Round

with African beats! Helbock, always adventurous, added to the array of interesting soundscapes by playing the piano from the inside. The interplay between the three was enthralling.

Next up was the Gavino Murgia Mediterranean Trio with vocalist and one of Italy’s top saxophonists, Gavino Murgia, guitarist Marcello Peghin, and drummer Pietro Iodice. They played a set that fused jazz with traditional sounds from Murgia’s home island of Sardinia, creating music that gave us a glimpse into this Mediterranean island through astonishingly refreshing compositions. This adept trio’s set revealed new approaches to modern jazz and ethnic folk music. Highlights included Gavino’s vocals that sounded like primal scatting (utterly intriguing) and a rendition of an achingly beautiful piece by Monteverdi that was simply breathtaking.

If you didn’t make it, the concert from 1 November (Sat) was filmed and will be on RTHK TV31 on 13 December (Sat) at 8:30pm. You can listen to that same concert on Radio 4 on 12 December (Fri) at 8 pm, repeated on 17 December (Wed) at 2pm. There will also be video available at rthk.hk/musicbeyondborders.

「無限領域」兩場音樂會於11月1及2日在「新視野藝術節」舉行,觀眾反應熱烈。

獲獎無數的希爾博三重奏首先登場。他們的演奏充滿刺激而美妙的對比,既有希爾博

自己的作品,也向佩特‧馬德森等爵士樂壇前輩致敬,甚至把奧地利民歌配上了非洲

鼓節拍演出。三人的表演精彩配搭甚有默契。

隨後出場的是慕嘉地中海三重奏。他們把主音歌手慕嘉故鄉薩丁島的傳統音樂與爵士

樂糅合,為觀眾呈現出地中海島嶼的迷人風情。尤其值得一提的,是慕嘉的嗓音實

在引人入勝。而三重奏創作樂曲的靈感來源,甚至包括意大利作曲家蒙台威爾第的

音樂。

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) enters its third decade in providing education in Performing Arts. Unlike many who cringe at the thought of turning 30, the HKAPA embraces its 30 years of age with a year-long celebration.

Established in 1984, the HKAPA is the only tertiary institution in Hong Kong that provides professional undergraduate education and practice-based postgraduate studies in Dance, Drama, Film and Television, Music, Theatre and Entertainment Arts, and Chinese Opera. In addition to its main campus in Wanchai, HKAPA also holds courses at Béthanie, the institution’s Landmark Heritage Campus in Pokfulam, which has been an extension of the HKAPA’s School of Film and Television since 2007.

Among the estimated 750 students who graduate from the HKAPA each year, a large number of them find work in arts education and administration. Some even immerse themselves in the business sector. Some graduates get positions locally in orchestras such as the HK Philharmonic, the Hong Kong Sinfonietta, in dance ensembles such as the Hong Kong Ballet, while others make their names on the international scene. And so the HKAPA has taken much pride in graduates such as pianists Colleen Lee and Rachel Cheung, conductor Lio Kuok-man, and actor and film director Anthony Wong.

The HKAPA puts on impressive productions and performances throughout this year. Highlights included a Cantonese opera version of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, which, came from a ‘cross-fertilisation between different disciplines and east and west cultural practices’; and a dance production entitled Three Dances for a Celebration that was an original work highlighting the extraordinary features of the Academy. Indeed, the HKAPA plays a vital role in contributing to the future cultural life of Hong Kong in giving its young creative artists an opportunity to produce new work and to showcase it. HKAPA Director Adrian Walter sees that this is the way that new ideas will make their way into the arts of Hong Kong.

In a recent interview, Professor Walter talked as eagerly about the institution as a proud father would talk of his child. When asked how he compares the HKAPA students to performing arts students in other continents, he said that the Academy captures the very best young talent. And he thought that, overall, the average quality of students at the Academy was probably higher than that found in many similar institutions in the US or Australia.

Communication and discipline are two essential qualities that are required of performing artists. In Professor Walter’s words, ‘performing artists…… know how to communicate an idea to a group of people. They are often very good team people because they are so used to working in collaborative teams; working to really pressured deadlines; getting a performance or a production ready. They learn very good time management skills and to be able to work under pressure. It takes an amazing amount of discipline for students to practice for hours, whether they are dancers or musicians.’

When asked about the Academy’s vision for the next 30 years, the Director boldly replied, ‘I want the HKAPA to remain the first choice for a talented young performing artist who wants to study at tertiary level in this city. I want us to be highly competitive within the globally emerging learning environment. I want them to look at Hong Kong and think that there’s a lot that Hong Kong can offer here. So I really want to maintain our position as a leading institute in the performing arts that can attract the very best young students in Hong Kong and the region.’

Radio 4 will broadcast two ‘Academy Alumni Homecoming Concerts’ at the end of December. There is music to suit all palates! Tune in to Live on 4 on 26 December (Fri) at 8pm for a concert featuring western music, and on 27 December (Sat) at 8pm for a concert featuring Chinese music.

香港演藝學院於1984年成立,是本港唯一的表演藝術�育院校,提供學士課程及

實踐為本的研究生課程,專業範疇包括舞蹈、戲劇、電影與電視、音樂、舞台及

製作藝術、中國戲曲。除設於灣仔的校園本部外,自2007年起位於薄扶林的古蹟

校園伯大尼校園,亦擴展成電影電視學院的所在地。

香港演藝學院每年約有七百五十位畢業生,大部份從事藝術�育及行政,也有從

商的,亦有獲聘加入香港管弦樂團、香港小交響樂團、香港芭蕾舞團等職業藝

團,以及到外地發展的。多年來,學院為培育出知名的藝術家而感到自豪 ─ 鋼

琴家李嘉齡及張緯晴、指揮家廖國敏、演員兼電影導演黃秋生都是出色的例子。

為慶祝創校三十週年,香港演藝學院今年舉辦了精彩的製作及表演。其中一項重

點活動是把莎士比亞的《馴悍記》編成粵劇演出。根據香港演藝學院校長華道賢

�授所說,這正是「從不同藝術範疇把中、西文化結合的成果」。學院亦製作了

《舞蹈三部曲:慶典》舞蹈表演,以「突顯學院重視創作全新作品」。由此可

見,香港演藝學院「肩負為香港未來文化生活貢獻的關鍵角色,為年青藝術家提

供製作及演出新作品的機會,藉此改造社會對文化藝術的看法。」

華道賢�授在訪問中談到學院時,臉上露出一副父親為兒子引以為榮的樣子。問

及如何比較學院及其他地方的表演藝術學生,他指出:「香港演藝學院很獨特,

是香港唯一提供大專程度音樂及表演藝術�育的院校,因此取錄的學生都是最優

秀、最具天份的⋯⋯。學生的平均水平,比美國或澳洲的許多院校還要高。」

良好的溝通技巧及自律能力,都是表演者必備的。華道賢�授說:「演奏家須擁

有良好的溝通能力,才懂得把理念傳遞給觀眾。他們往往能與人合作無間,因為

他們早已習慣與人分工,趕及在期限前完成工作,為表演及製作做好準備。管理

時間方面要非常了得,在壓力下亦可完成任務。不論舞蹈或是演奏音樂,都要很

長時間練習,自律程度之高,實在了不起。」

對於香港演藝學院下一個三十年,華道賢�授有甚麼願景?他的回答顯出果敢的

氣魄:「對希望在香港接受大專�育的年青表演人才而言,我期望香港演藝學院

繼續成為他們的首選學府;我亦期望學院具有較高的競爭力,以面對全世界熾熱

的學習氛圍,並讓人們認識香港能提供豐富的文化藝術生活;我更期望香港演藝

學院繼續保持表演藝術院校的領導地位,吸引香港及亞洲區最優秀的年青學生到

來學習。」

香港演藝學院一直為香港提供表演藝術�育,今年踏入第三十個年頭。

慶祝活動源源不絕,橫跨整年進行。

In the huge collection of recordings at RTHK, we have found only

one complete recording of this version and we are so excited to

be bringing Mozart’s arrangement live to Hong Kong. Listening to

our collection recording, I was immediately attracted by Mozart’s

contribution to this esteemed work. Let’s look at Handel’s version

first.

The Orignial Version

The oratorio is made up of three parts: the predictions of the coming

Messiah; His passion, death, resurrection and ascension into

Heaven; and, finally, the promise of Redemption for his followers.

Part one is the most suitable section to perform during Christmas,

the time of the Messiah’s birth. The solo passages and choruses

tell of the one who shall purify the sons of Levi and that unto the

people who walked in darkness, a child is born. Then the pastoral

symphony ‘Pifa’ brings us to the field, where the shepherds are

visited by an angel proclaiming the birth of Messiah, and the joy

is expressed in the effervescent vocal melismas of the aria ‘Rejoice

greatly, o Daughter of Zion’. The final chorus ‘His yoke is easy, his

burthen is light’ is also filled with melismas, making it one of the

most demanding pieces for the choir.

Mozart’s Involvement

Handel sensitively reflected the meaning of the text in his vocal

writing and created an oratorio of great emotional appeal. Messiah

has been popular ever since its premiere in Dublin in 1742. Why

did Mozart decide to make some changes to the work? It was

simply because of his need for commission fee. You may read the

story in P.17, Mozart must have fun working for the commission,

as you can hear the delightful counter melodies he added for the

flutes and clarinets. The overall arrangement was very interesting,

without going too far away from Handel’s style, yet modernising

the work for Mozart’s day.

這個由莫扎特改編的版本不算流行,連藏碟甚豐的香港電

台唱片房亦只得一套完整錄音。一聽之下,不禁噗嚇笑了

出來,那是個很有趣、很值得搬上舞台與樂迷分享的改編

版!當然,韓德爾的原曲已是不朽名作。

韓德爾的原作

《彌賽亞》包括三個部份。第一部份的內容是預言基督的

降生:基督到來的時候,祂必潔淨利未人;又安慰在黑暗

中行走的百姓,有一嬰孩為我們而生。一首風笛曲把場景

移至野地,牧羊人看見天使報佳音。此時女高音獨唱的詠

嘆調〈錫安的民哪,應當大大喜樂〉不但充滿歡欣,更有

悠長的花腔樂句,與弦樂一唱一和。最後的合唱曲〈祂的

軛是容易的〉同樣對歌者的技巧有很高的要求。儘管四聲

部的樂句密集交織,但俏皮的切分音加上樂團節奏平穩的

伴奏,竟令音樂如舞曲般活潑輕盈。

莫扎特的加工

《彌賽亞》堪稱最成功的神劇,然而莫扎特又何以膽敢插

手改編?原因很實際 ─「等錢洗」,大家可翻到第17頁看

看蔣頌恩的解說。改編的版本加入多件管樂器,長笛和單

簧管不時奏出饒富趣味的「加料」旋律。看來莫扎特對這

項任務樂在其中,而且他的工作也很稱職,新增的裝飾和

配器並沒有脫離韓德爾原作的風格。

Our Distinguished Performers

The performance on 24 December will be led by Lio Kuok-

man, a laureate at the Third Svetlanov International Conducting

Competition. Four top local vocalists – soprano Yuki Ip, alto Carol

Lin, tenor Alex Tam and bass Caleb Woo – will share the stage with

Die Konzertisten Festival Singers and the City Chamber Orchestra

of Hong Kong. Apart from Messiah, the performance will also

include the Christmas Medley that British composer Bill Connor

specially arranged for the first Christmas Concert. Just like Mozart

did to Handel, Connor has augmented the orchestration and to

present this splendid new edition as a gift for the concert’s tenth

birthday. You are invited to come and sing along to share the joyful

spirit in the carols.

The Christmas Concert will begin at 5pm on Christmas Eve at

Olympic Square, Hong Kong Park. If you would like to enjoy

the music in the winter daylight, you are welcome to attend the

open rehearsal at 1:30pm. The concert is also the grand finale of

Radio 4’s year-long celebration of its 40th Anniversary. Don’t miss

this special event. See you in the park!

The Commission

When Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791) was asked to arrange this monumental oratorio for a private performance nearly half a century later, it was somewhat a relief of his financial burdens. At the time, the situation in Vienna was complicated by the Turkish war. Musical patronage declined during 1788 and 1789, with fewer concerts than in the early 1780s. Hence, the commission in 1789 by Baron van Swieten for the Gesellschaft der Associierten Cavaliere (Society of Associated Cavaliers, a group of noble enthusiasts who sponsored performances of oratorios in Vienna at the time) was much needed to supplement Mozart’s unstable income. In fact, the Handel projects (which included Acis and Galatea, Alexander’s Feast, the Ode for St Cecilia’s Day, and Messiah) were completed in haste at the Baron’s behest. The completed German version of Messiah (adapted from a translation by Klopstock and Ebeling) was first performed in the home of Count Johann Esterházy on 6 March 1789.

The Score

Baron van Swieten and those who funded the performances of Handel’s oratorios and wanted to update the music for a ‘modern audience’ – Baroque, to them, was an outdated style, and would hinder the general audience from appreciating the merits of Handel’s music. On his visit to London in 1769, the Baron bought several scores by Handel, among which was believed to be the version of Messiah published by Randall and Abell in 1767. However, this particular version differed from the other published scores, and was certainly different from the urtext version that we now hear frequently performed by period instruments. It is this version of the score that he gave to Mozart to work on, and this created a couple of pre-existing conditions in Mozart’s rendition.

The Differences

Firstly, the most obvious is the omission of the chorus ‘Let all the angels of God worship Him’ and the aria ‘Thou art gone up on high.’ He also drastically truncated ‘The trumpet shall sound’ from 213 to 82 measures, and replaced the aria ‘If God be for us’ with a recitative. In other places, Mozart reassigned the solos to other voices, for instance, ‘But who may abide’ is assigned to bass. These changes may not have been entirely Mozart’s intentions to begin with, as the Randall and Abell score does not mark which solos are to be sung by which particular voice.

Secondly, the Randall and Abell score deviated from Handel’s original in some rhythms and pitches, and some articulations and trills are missing. In order to be consistent, Mozart added markings where they were absent, or provided bowings, articulations, and trills where the score had none.

Thirdly, given a different performing force at hand, Mozart had to cater for a larger group of choristers and instruments, rather than opting for a performance in a Handelian style. Indeed, as we might expect, he expanded the ensemble resemble that of a Classical symphonic orchestra, adding parts for flutes, clarinets, horns, trombone, and writing new parts for oboes, bassoons, trumpets and timpani, aimed at modernising the music for the taste of a contemporary audience. 32 out of 53 numbers are reorchestrated, the most apparent in the aria ‘O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion’, where he composed a new second violin part besides adding flute, clarinets, bassoons, horns and violas to the original unison violin part.

Despite the above-mentioned changes, Mozart preserved much of Handel’s musical ideas, and the Mozartian Messiah was eventually published by Breitkopf und Härtel in 1803.

及聖公會公禱書為藍本。韓德爾只花了短短二十四天便完成這部傑作。

新 版 的 改 動

莫扎特除了明顯地刪去第二部份其中兩段及大幅縮短詠嘆調

〈因號筒要響〉之外,亦把詠嘆調〈上主若幫助我們〉改為

宣敘調,獨唱曲如〈他來的日子,誰能當得起呢〉則安排由

男低音獨唱。但是,以上的改動不全是莫扎特的神來之筆,

而是因為1767年版的樂譜上沒有列明獨唱部份交由誰來負

責。其次,1767年版的《彌賽亞》有好些節奏和音調有別於

韓德爾的原作。為了令樂曲的演奏指示統一,莫扎特往往要

增刪或補上遺漏的裝飾音、弓法和其他演奏記號。

當然,直至1789年古典風格的交響樂隊已經成形,而莫扎特

亦沒有刻意追求巴羅克的聲響世界,因此為伴奏部份加上長

笛、單簧管、圓號、長號,又為當中差不多三分之二的樂章

重新配器。縱是如此,《彌賽亞》仍保留著韓德爾音樂的神

髓,而莫扎特的版本最終在1803年出版。

Lio Kuok-man has been awarded Second Prize at the Third Svetlanov

International Conducting Competition held in Paris in June, and his career

is already flying high in international scene. Two months ahead of his

appearance in Radio 4’s Christmas Concert in the Park, Lio visited RTHK

and talked to Jonathan Douglas before moving to his next stop, Taipei.

J : What have been the highlights of your recent life?

L : Over the last few months I made my official debut in September in Paris with the Radio France Philharmonique with Vadim Repin as soloist. Last week I made my first concert debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra as Assistant Conductor in the concert hall.

J : Very exciting!

A Conductor’s Busy Schedule

L : Yes, it’s been a very busy few months already.

J : What was the repertoire in these two concerts?

L : With Repin, he commissioned a new concerto, and it’s an hour-long, heavy work. The second half of the concert in Paris was the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5. With Philadelphia last week we did Bernstein’s West Side Story and we also featured our Principal Tuba, Carol Jantsch, she’s fantastic. We played two movements from Michael Daugherty’s Tuba Concerto that will be played later in the season.

J : Was that also a premiere?

L : No, but it was commissioned and given its premiere by her last year.

J : On the subject of premieres, what you are doing now in Hong Kong is a work which you premiered fairly recently?

L : Yes, I find myself doing a lot of new music these days. We are working on Heart of Coral, a chamber opera, commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Festival, written by Chan Hing-yan, and we gave the premiere of this work last year in March. We are bringing it on tour to Taiwan as a ‘Hong Kong Week’ project, and we have really what I’d say is a ‘made in Hong Kong’ cast because all the leading singers and ensemble are made up of Hong Kong musicians. To me it’s a very good symbol to represent Hong Kong.

J : Working with singers is something you quite enjoy as well, it seems to me that.

L : Yes, I love working with opera singers.

J : Is opera something you enjoy doing when you have the opportunity?

L : Yes, I’d say it’s very different from orchestral conducting, but, in a way, there isn’t that much difference because when we play an instrument, we always try to play as if it is singing. We are always imagining how it would sound in a human voice, which is the most natural way of expression. Also, in opera, there is a story with drama and to me that is a lot of fun.

J : You have an opera coming up, Turandot in December. Have you done that before?

L : No, it’s my first time.

J : With the Shostakovich 5th Symphony, was it the first time you conducted that?

L : I had done part of it before, but it’s my first time doing the whole piece.

J : That must be a really nice thing at the beginning stage of a career, you must encounter these musical experiences as a conductor for the first time.

L : Yes, it’s very challenging because every few weeks you will see a piece and it will be your first time doing it, often in front of musicians who have done it so many times. For me, the key is always be prepared, know the piece, know the music.

J : This Christmas you are conducting the Radio 4’s Christmas Concert in the Park, with a very interesting choice of repertoire, the Mozart Messiah. Is this an arrangement you were aware of before you were invited to participate in this project?

First Time to conduct Mozart’s Messiah

L : Yes, I was aware of this orchestration by Mozart although I had never conducted it. There were many different editions of the Messiah because after Handel’s time, they tried to play it in the big cathedral which required different orchestrations. Sometimes they would add extra flutes or piccolo, so it keeps changing. I love to do the Mozart orchestration because it is special.

J : What was the idea behind Mozart’s orchestration? What do you sense that he was attempting to do?

L : I think he was trying to keep the sound quality of Handel, it’s not as thick as later orchestrations, but also I think he had put in his thoughts in it, in some way. I don’t want to use the word ‘improved’ but I can sense that he was trying to change the work a little bit. It is a very good balance and we are performing in the park, so I think this is a good edition to do, but if we are doing it in a small cathedral, that I might prefer a different version.

J : Do you know when and for what purpose Mozart did this arrangement?

L : Someone approached him to work on this for a special occasion. He agreed and he worked very quickly. As I said earlier, he agreed to almost ‘fix’ it a little bit, and I think at that time it was quite a common practice. Composers would fix up the scores, add the trombone part for example, and it’s very practical as well; if the church had trombone players, would he mind adding the part for them? And, of course, Mozart would pick the most appropriate moment to use this opportunity to use his creativity in the work so I think it’s very interesting.

J : That was such a practical approach whereas nowadays we would tend to feel......

L : It’s urtext always.

J : Have you done Handel’s version?

L : I sang and played piano for the chorus. It’s a work that I remember even when I was a student at the APA singing it at Christmas, but looking at the score brings back many memories.

談到對「聖誕園林音樂會」瞭如指掌的人,除了第四台同事,

必定是女高音葉葆菁了。在2005年第一屆音樂會中,她已是

獨唱之一。觀眾很喜愛她,自此她幾乎每年都重返這個舞台。

杜: 「聖誕園林音樂會」即將步入第十年,並會再次演出 《彌賽亞》。你對這套作品很熟悉吧!

葉: 我演唱過挺多次了,但從沒有計算次數!《彌賽亞》是我其中一齣最喜愛的神劇,音樂很優美,又有很多著名的調子,無論演奏者或觀眾都十分喜愛這齣作品。

杜: 還有一些非常精彩的女高音部份 ⋯⋯

葉: 在多首詠嘆調中,我喜愛的是〈錫安的民哪,應當大大喜樂〉,速度令人振奮。這是一首充滿喜樂的詠嘆調,演唱時技巧上富有挑戰性,亦令我感到愉快,這感覺是難以形容的。

杜: 那令人振奮的感覺定會傳達到觀眾那裡。今年我們特別挑選了莫扎特的版本上演,你有聽過這個版本嗎?

葉:今次是我第一次演唱這個版本。

杜:看過樂譜嗎?

葉: 昨天才收到樂譜,還未仔細看過,基本上我唱的部份沒有改動,都是原本那些詠嘆調及宣敘調。

杜: 我想主要的改動都是在配器方面,所以對女高音沒有太大影響。你已經多次參與「聖誕園林音樂會」的演出,真是太好了。

葉: 這是我的榮幸。我覺得這音樂會像一個大型的派對,樂迷聚首一堂慶祝聖誕。我很喜歡每年的《聖誕套曲》,因為觀眾能夠參與其中。當他們加入合唱聖誕歌時,感覺很 特別。

杜: 你認為「聖誕園林音樂會」的成功在於甚麼?

葉: 我覺得沒有太多機會在戶外舉行聖誕音樂會吧,所以大家都很喜歡。當你坐在一個環境優美的公園裡,感受很不一樣。特別之處是每年的主題和表演隊伍都不同,就如去年邀請警察樂隊演出,那是我第一次跟有風笛演奏的警察樂隊合作。每年香港電台都有特別的節目編排吸引樂迷參與,觀眾會期待今年有甚麼好節目。

杜: 你在「聖誕園林音樂會」演出了多少次?

葉: 我想至少有七次了。

杜: 厲害!記起這麼多年的音樂會,是整體的記憶,還是想起某一年難忘的片段?

葉: 我永遠都不會忘記第一屆,是演出《彌賽亞》。那年我遇到了當時的男朋友,他現在是我的丈夫。

杜: 你是當時遇上他?

葉: 不是在音樂會,是同一年的那個時候。

杜: 所以現在回想起覺得甜蜜浪漫吧。

葉: 對呀!之後我演出了韋華第的《榮耀頌》,那應該是第二屆。

杜: 這套作品的女高音詠嘆調很動聽。

葉: 我當時與女低音連皓忻一起演唱,今年又跟她再次合作。第一年演出的《彌賽亞》,女低音部份由假聲男高音蔡文燦演唱。

杜: 你與連皓忻認識了好些年?

葉: 對,我們曾在多場音樂會同台演出。

杜: 在過去的聖誕音樂會中,你有特別難忘的片段嗎?

葉: 這很難說。

杜: 有一場是以莫扎特為主題吧?

葉: 對,我與林敬基合作,唱了《喜悅歡騰》,那次的確很有趣。如果只能選一場實在很困難。每一年的音樂會我都很喜歡。

杜:以孟德爾遜為主題的那一年,你有參與嗎?

葉: 沒有。可是,我不用演出的時候都會坐在觀眾席,因為我也想參與其中。

杜: 真好!而且還可以與朋友及家人一起歡度平安夜。談回連皓忻,你跟她是同期在香港演藝學院的同學嗎?

葉: 不是,我比她年長幾歲,所以我在「演藝」時她還未入學。後來我們分別到美國,入讀新英格蘭音樂學院。

杜: 你和連皓忻今年又會同台演出了,你又提起十年前如何遇上你的男朋友,亦即是你現在的丈夫,還有你剛剛結婚了,真是喜事重重!

葉: 多謝你!

杜: 太絕妙了,很高興你與我們分享在過去參與「聖誕園林音樂會」的點滴。

葉: 對呀,我只能說實在太特別了。

I have sung in seven Christmas Concerts over the last nine years with The Opera Society of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Youth Choir, and Die Konzertisten Festival Singers.

It is really remarkable what different but appropriate themes that RTHK has come up with for the Christmas Concerts – music from Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Mozart, and Mendelssohn to Karl Jenkins, John Rutter and Argentinian composers Ariel Ramírez and Mario Latumbo; performers including distinguished conductors, singers and instrumentalists, and local choral groups, as well as tertiary and secondary school students. It was a special pleasure for me to hear my favourite soprano, Louise Kwong, who I knew when she was a student at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, singing so beautifully at the Christmas Concert 2012 A Midwinter Night.

As a member of St John’s Cathedral Choir, I had to attend compulsory practice for the Christmas midnight service and this very often clashed with the final rehearsal of the RTHK Christmas Concert. Passersby must have wondered what was going on as some of my fellow choristers and I ran over the footbridges from the Cathedral to Hong Kong Park in order to make it in time!

Looking forward to being part of another memorable concert on Christmas Eve, I wish you all a season of love, joy and peace!

回想過去九年,我作為香港歌劇社合唱團、香港新青年合唱團和Die Konzertisten節日合唱團的一員,一共參與過七次「聖誕園林音樂會」的演出。

香港電台的「聖誕園林音樂會」每年都有不同主題,有巴赫、韓德爾、莫扎特和孟德爾遜,以至祖健士、瑞特、阿根廷作曲家拉美利斯和林庭寶的音樂。演出者方面有傑出的指揮、歌唱家和演奏家,又有本地合唱團,加上大專和中學生。我亦很高興能在2012年與女高音鄺勵齡同場演出。她在中文大學讀書時,我倆已經認識。她在「平安夜之夢」的演唱實是優美。

在「聖誕園林音樂會」的最後綵排前,我仍要出席聖約翰座堂詩班的練習,以準備當晚子夜的首感恩祭。之後我與其他合唱團團員急忙趕到香港公園綵排,不知情的途人都會感到奇怪吧!

期待再次在平安夜參與演出,相信會是難忘的音樂會。祝你有個充滿愛、喜樂和平安的聖誕節!

Congratulations to RTHK Radio 4 on 10 years of merry music-making at Christmas. City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong has played at almost all the Christmas concerts at Hong Kong Park. ‘A World Christmas’ in 2008 was probably my favourite event. I remember how the orchestral players stood up and gave Christmas greetings in Chinese, French, Tagalog, Russian, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese and Gaelic! How diverse we are!

恭賀香港電台第四台的聖誕盛會踏入第十年。香港城市室樂團幾乎每年都來到香港公園參與演出,而2008年的「響遍地極」是我最喜愛的一次製作。記得多位樂團成員輪流起立,以中文、法語、他加祿語、俄語、越南語、韓語、日語及蓋爾語向觀眾祝賀聖誕。看我們的背景那麼多元!

10 years have flown by – and it has been my honour to have participated in every single ‘Christmas Concert in the Park’. Episodes of fond memories triggering a smile from within.

從「腦震盪」會議的亂想,至設計節目內容時的細想,到進行製作及遇到問題時尋求解決方案的狂想⋯⋯

轉眼十年,我有幸參與過去每一場「聖誕園林音樂會」,腦海中每個片段,都是讓人歡笑溢於

面上的回想。

Every Christmas Eve for the past decade, the whole Radio 4 team has dashed around the concert venue all day to adjust the audio system, prepare the house programme, usher audience members into the seats… and then, when ‘Ladies and gentlemen, welcome……’, the first words from the MCs were heard, there was a wonderful sparkle in my colleagues’ eyes.

After months of preparation, we will present the tenth Christmas Concert to the public very soon. When the concert begins, I know we will have the same level of excitement that has been building every year!

每年的平安夜,第四台各同事都為「聖誕園林音樂會」忙碌奔波:調校音響、佈置場地、人流控制⋯⋯當聽到主持人向着人山人海的觀眾說出「大家好,歡迎到臨⋯⋯」,我看到大家的眼裡閃耀著光芒。

經過大半年的籌備,我們精心設計的音樂會將要呈獻給廣大樂迷。縱使有多年經驗,我相信當十週年演出揭幕一刻,大家的心情會同樣激盪。

I still remember when, in 2005, while outdoor classical concerts were seldom organised in town and rarely seen on local TV channels, Radio 4 took the initiative to team up with more than 300 musicians at the cozy square inside Hong Kong Park, performing Handel’s glorious Messiah and a set of holiday songs tailor-made into the first Christmas Medley by British composer Bill Connor. Nine years have passed and the tenth is approaching, the Christmas Concert in the Park has a well-established reputation and has become a ‘must-go’ for many Hong Kong people.

I am really proud of myself for being able to take part in this exciting project for eight years long. After leaving Radio 4 last year, I was able to participate in the concert from a new perspective - as an audience member. It was the first time I could truly sit back, relax, and listen. It was a sheer pleasure! I really look forward to the tenth Anniversary this year, I am sure it will be a concert to remember!

十年前,第四台首次舉辦「聖誕園林音樂會」,邀請三百位演奏家及合唱團團員齊集雅緻的香港公園,以黄昏的天空為幕,在高樓大廈圍繞的一片園林中演出韓德爾輝煌的《彌賽亞》,更與現場觀眾合唱英國作曲家康納精心編寫的聖誕套曲,而且入場費全免。節目一出,引起廣泛迴響。

十年中,我曾參與八年的製作。去年離開第四台後,我首次可以用「客觀」的角度,舒舒服服的坐下來以觀眾的目光去欣賞這個節目。台前演出和配搭的確精彩,我更可以想像幕後的工作人員是如何努力地達成目標,同樣叫我感動。

第十屆在即,如眾多觀眾一樣,我熱切期待。

You can hear such diverse styles as wild-tempoed Bulería Flamenco with soloist José de la Negreta; an excerpt from a traditional evening Kirwani Raga with violinist Madhuri Chattopadhyay, sitar player Subroto Roy Chowdury and tabla player Pandit Sankha Chatterjee; traditional Tuscan counting rhymes with diatonic accordion virtuoso Riccardo Tesi; new Flemish folk with the band Kadril, featuring singer and clarinet player Eva de Roovere; a revival of the medieval Scandinavian string instrument ‘Morhapa’ with Anders Norudde, and much more.

As a complement to this sampling of a wide variety of world music, the show will also, at the same time, look at one artist or musical group’s music in depth. As an example of such explorations, here are a few of the artists we are likely to focus on in this month’s shows:

• The ‘Soufleurs de rêve’ ensemble from the Languedoc region in the South of France who bring together maritime melodies from Bas-Languedoc and woodland ditties from the Gard region; their repertoire features two instruments typical of the Languedoc region, the ‘Tambornet’ drum and the Languedoc oboe. This oboe figures prominently in the unique annual nautical ‘Ajustas’ jousting matches, in the Mediterranean city of Sète. Traditionally, two teams face each other in long wooden boats, each containing ten oarsmen; their jouster, who each attempts to dislodge and push in the water the other jouster with their blunted lances; and their oboe players. In the boats, the oboe players stand opposite their jouster and play to give him courage and moral support.

This December, Songs of the Earth continues to take you on a one-hour exploration of different musical styles from around the planet. Every week I bring together a different mix of traditional music from all over the world, highlighting the different musical genres within their cultural milieux.

• Carlos Nuñez, virtuoso player of the Galician bagpipes called ‘Gaïta’, and his band Matto Congrio, in a concert they gave at the Lorient International Celtic Festival in Brittany. Their repertoire expands from traditional Galician Celtic songs to include Irish reels, Scottish Pibrochs, and Brittony Biniou music. In this concert, they also include guest Pibroch bagpipe virtuoso Patrick Molard on a few of the songs.

• A Christmas Special with a focus on songs from Latin America. You will hear a variety of Navidad music from a traditional Villancico Christmas carol with the Coro Real de San Pedro, Mexico; and the traditional Andean band Sukay playing the Zampoñas panpipes and the charrango guitar; to the traditional Parranda choirs singing house to house for Aguinaldos, Christmas gifts, by the Cuban Sonora Matancera; and a Parranda Oriental from Venezuelan group Sol y Sereno; followed by the Puerto Rican Cuatro guitar virtuoso Yomo Toro with Elvis Crespo; and a Cuban Bolero from Chappotín y su conjunto, ending with a few surprises at the end.

• The Makye Ame Tibetan Folk Art Troupe from Lhasa and traditional Tibetan folk songs, a few of which put to music famous poems by Tsangyang Gyatso, the legendary Sixth Dalai Lama of Tibet. His love poems are, in fact, Buddhist poetry of nature. The group’s name, Make Ame, refers to a famous poem of Tsangyang Gyatso about the ‘shining silver moon’. They play western and traditional Tibetan instruments such as the ‘zha-mu-nie’ and the ‘xian-ze’ stringed instruments, as well as the Buddhist bell and bowl.

28/12 第四集 : 薄暮時份 (Im Abendrot) 夕陽無限好。年過八十的李察‧史特勞斯的餘暉依然光芒四射。1947年在倫敦舉行的「李察‧史特勞斯音樂節」中,他不但帶同妻子出席,更在皇家艾爾拔音樂廳指揮愛樂樂團演奏了《唐璜》和《玫瑰騎士》等名曲,作為他為自己選奏安魂曲的預告。作曲家在最後一首歌曲〈薄暮時份〉,加插了一段「死亡的動機」,那就是在他的第三首交響詩《死與變容》中六個音符的主題。即使作品已經完成了六十年,他仍視之為人生終結的好題材。

14/12 第二集 : 九月 (September)

9月,是李察‧史特勞斯離世的日子。在1949年當李察‧史特勞斯八十五歲時,年僅三十七的蘇提 (Georg Solti) 在6月為這位前輩舉行生日音樂會,指揮樂團演出多首名曲,德國和歐洲的音樂人為此聚首一堂。可惜,豈料三個月之後眾人再聚在一起,同樣是在蘇提的指揮下,以悠

揚的樂聲歡送這位被鋼琴家古特(Glenn Gould)稱為「二十世紀最偉大的音樂人物」。

21/12 第三集 : 入睡 (Beim Schlafengehen)

入睡,是死亡前的靜止。在《最後四首藝術歌曲》中,後三首也是在刻劃死亡。

納粹德軍上台後,李察‧史特勞斯當了音樂事務大臣,一心為新政府推動藝術發展,同時亦保護猶太裔的媳婦及孫兒免被送到集中營。可惜,他在戰後被國際間猛烈批評,作品亦被杯葛,令晚年的他在家鄉鬱鬱而終。這四首藝術歌曲,是為女高音和管弦樂團而寫,但圓號的演奏部

份卻貫穿其中。也許,那是李察‧史特勞斯入睡前對妻子和父親感情的迴盪。

Extraordinary times produce extraordinary individuals. Solomon Matthew Bard is one such extraordinary man, and he proved he could achieve in a lifetime what it would take others a few more to do. The accomplished doctor-musician-archaeologist-historian-author passed away peacefully in a Sydney hospital on 7 November. He was just two years short of a century.

A Renaissance man of many talents, Bard cherished music most ever since he studied violin with his uncle nine decades ago. That was shortly after he left East Siberia with his family and settled in Harbin, the largest Russian émigré city outside of the Soviet Union. There he enrolled at the Glazunov Conservatory, and became a violinist in the all-Russian Harbin Symphony Orchestra.

But it all changed in 1931 when Japan turned Northeast China into a puppet state of Manchukuo. Bard, as a teenager, went to Shanghai to look for an orchestra job. But his uncle advised him to change career because the future of orchestras was grim with the end of silent movies. He took his advice and, in 1934, sat for the entrance examination to the University of Hong Kong and passed.

Either good times or bad, Bard always had music with him. ‘Music doesn’t just relax me, it fulfils me,’ he once said. Whether it was his six years at HKU as a medical student or three years at the Shamshuipo camp as a POW during Japanese occupation, he and music were inseparable. When the war was over, he was invited to lead the Sino-British Orchestra, or Hong Kong Philharmonic since 1957. A year before that, he made history by performing with a group of Hong Kong musicians in Guangzhou, the first since 1949.

Bard never seemed to indulge in power. He was just too busy to pursue other interests in life. He relinquished his position as Chair of the HK Philharmonic Society in 1974 when the orchestra turned professional. At the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, he was happy to be the Assistant Music Director and refused to be acting Music Director when the opportunity came in 1985. His genuine modesty won him many friends here and in Australia, where he moved to in 1993. There he led the Strathfield Symphony Orchestra and introduced his favourite Chinese work Moonlight Reflected on Erquan.

There always has been music wherever Bard goes.

不變。那時他和家人剛從西伯利亞東部移居

俄羅斯境外最大移民城市哈爾濱不久,入讀

由俄僑興辦的格拉祖諾夫高等音樂學校,後

來更成為哈爾濱交響樂團的成員之一。

1931年九一八事件,日本攻佔東北三省,建

立傀儡滿洲國,徹底改變了白德及家人的小

康生活。年輕的白德與哥哥南下上海,希望

得到在上海工部局樂隊工作的叔叔的關照。

然而他的叔叔以默片年代結束,樂隊前景不

The CASH Golden Sail Music Awards 2014 Presentation was held on 3 November.

Alfred Wong’s Voice of Heritage was named the ‘Best Serious Composition’, and Ng

Cheuk-yin and You See-hand’s choral piece Singing Voices of the World was named

the ‘Most Performed Work’ in the category of local serious work.

Alfred Wong is a graduate of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and his Voice

of Heritage is based on his alma mater’s global vision: ‘To combine tradition with

modernity, and bring together China and the West.’ The work calls for a Chinese

orchestra, a symphony orchestra, and an organ.

With its charming melody, positive lyrics, and creative sound effects from nature, Ng

Cheuk-yin’s Singing Voices of the World became the most performed work over the

year. This choral work is performed by children’s choirs and adult choirs not only in

Hong Kong but also by many Chinese community ensembles worldwide.

括中樂團、管弦樂團和管風琴。

伍卓賢的《我唱出了世界的聲音》以游思行所填的正面歌詞、配合優美的旋律

和富創意的「大自然聲音」,過去一年由多隊兒童和成人合唱團在海內外演唱

過,成為最廣泛演出的作品。

甚樂觀,勸諭白德發展其他事業。後來

他在1934年考入香港大學,成功入讀醫

學院。

白德曾說:「音樂不光讓我釋懷,更成

全我。」無論他在香港大學習醫的六

年,抑或日治時期在深水埗集中營的三

年,音樂與他如影隨形。戰後他獲邀領

導中英樂團,樂團在1957年改名為香港

管弦樂團。此前一年,他更破天荒與香

港音樂小組到廣州公演,那是1949年以

來的首次。

1974年港樂職業化後,他從領導的角色

退下。1985年,他甘於擔任香港中樂團

助理音樂總監,婉拒代總監職位。

白德為人謙遜,在港以至1993年移居

澳洲後結交不少朋友。他在悉尼曾出任

當地一社區樂團的音樂總監,期間更指

揮他的至愛中樂作品《二泉映月》,

繼續為音樂發光發熱。

謹以此文遙祝白德安息,同時致以由衷

的敬禮。

To celebrate this important occasion, the Hong Kong Philharmonic presents a birthday concert for Radio 4, featuring Commentaries — In Celebration of RTHK Radio 4’s 40th Anniversary, a newly-commissioned work by Richard Tsang, which involves the participation of Radio 4’s own Jonathan Douglas and Kathy Lam as narrators. Also joining in the celebration are world-acclaimed percussionist Li Biao in Joseph Schwantner’s Percussion Concerto, and veteran conductor Lawrence Foster. 第四台一向孜孜不倦為聽眾送上美樂。為慶祝開台四十週年,香港管弦樂團為第四台舉辦誌慶音樂會。曾葉發的委約新作《綻》將作世界首演以賀第四台四十週年,並由第四台主持人杜格尊和林家琦以英語及粵語朗讀文本。享譽國際的敲擊樂手李颷,以及指揮大師霍斯特,亦會演出美國作曲家舒雲道亞的敲擊樂協奏曲和德伏扎克的第九交響曲「來自新世界」。歡迎樂迷屆時收聽現場直播,一同為第四台慶賀。

懷念白德

白德於2014年11月7日離世,終年九十八歲。他曾任香港管弦協會主席,並不時指揮演出,又在八十年代為香港中樂團擔任助理音樂總監,貢獻本港音樂文化,功不可沒。第四台將會播放1987年由白德指揮香港中樂團的珍貴錄音,與樂迷懷緬白德的風采。

郎朗的柴可夫斯基

鋼琴家郎朗可謂當今古典樂壇的代表人物之一。這次他重臨香港文化中心舞台,與香港管弦樂團合作演出柴可夫斯基的第一鋼琴協奏曲,同場亦會演奏柴可夫斯基的第四交響曲。節目浪漫輝煌,由梵志登指揮,萬勿錯過。

HKAPA 30th Anniversary Concert – Western MusicAlumni and friends of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts gather for a series of homecoming concerts this month to celebrate the Academy’s 30th Anniversary. In this concert, three eminent pianists from different generations, Cheng Wai, Colleen Lee and Rachel Cheung, form a team of piano six-hands for some amazing display of collaborative pianism in music by Rachmaninov and Liszt. The Academy’s string and woodwind players will respectively perform works by Elgar and Richard Strauss.

HKAPA 30th Anniversary Concert – Chinese MusicThe HKAPA, rooted in the ‘East meets West’ culture of Hong Kong, emphasises not only Western but also Chinese music. This programme is a showcase of the many music talents in Chinese music who have been educated and trained in the Academy. Chinese Music Virtuosi, Zheng Music, and many more Academy friends will make music in various styles, ranging from drum solo and Cantonese music, to dizi quartet and traditional silk and bamboo music.

香港演藝學院三十週年音樂會 — 中樂

在香港中西文化並融的氛圍下,香港演藝學院不只注重西樂訓練,更培育出不少中樂人才。龢鳴樂坊、箏音樂及其他本地中樂精英,在這場音樂會中以多種不同的音樂風格為樂迷獻技 ─ 鼓樂獨奏、廣東音樂、笛子四重奏及江南絲竹等等,應有盡有。

香港演藝學院三十週年音樂會 — 西樂

香港演藝學院的一眾校友及友好,本月將於學院聚首一堂,演出一系列音樂會慶祝「演藝」創校三十週年。出生於不同年代的三位傑出鋼琴家 ─ 鄭慧、李嘉齡和張緯晴,將以六手聯彈合奏拉赫曼尼諾夫和李斯特的作品。「演藝」的弦樂手和木管樂手也會分別獻奏艾爾加和李察‧史特勞斯的音樂。

…not have a hobby. And in my case – a few hobbies! I love to explore all things new: new restaurants, new gadgets, new recipes, new releases…. But as soon as I find something that I like, I stick to it. This is how I came to build up my hobbies. In my student days at university, Ballroom/Latin American dancing was just as cool as grooving to overly amplified hip-hop music in student-packed bars (aka, clubbing). The former was more appealing to me because I did not have to risk having my bottom pinched by drunken strangers who would always somehow ‘dissolve’ into the mass of alcohol-fueled hyper faces before I could even react to their cheeky ‘greetings’. I joined the university’s Dance Society on the first day of Fresher’s Week and, for the remaining three years as an undergraduate, spent more time dancing than I did practicing. While I don’t necessarily recommend this to any (music) students reading this, I must admit I really did have the time of my life……!

Rewinding my memories to the good old primary school days, I remember watching my father spend hours on Chinese painting during weekends - a hobby which he kept up when I became a boarding student in the UK. To alleviate my home-sickness he would send me one painting a week. By the end of my first term, I had about fifteen Chinese paintings (of lotuses, goldfish, roosters, birds and various other objects and subjects from the world of my father’s Chinese painting) blue-tacked all over the wall of my cubicle – which was essentially a subdivided private space that you could, I suppose, call a ‘room’ within an 8-person dormitory. It was these weekly ‘remedies’ that gradually sparked my interest in fine-art. Very soon I began to draw and paint with exceptional diligence and perseverance during my art classes at school.

My decision to study music was, to a certain extent, also a matter of hobby-gone-serious. Before taking music that one step further at tertiary and postgraduate levels, I had always enjoyed playing the piano and composing; they were activities that gave me a sense of pride and individuality. I call myself lucky to have had the chance eventually to pursue my hobby with professional training, and even luckier that I will be talking to real professionals from the keyboard world to kick-start 2015. From January onwards, I will be integrating a new series - HK’s Key Figures - to my daily ‘Four For Classics’. You will hear my conversations and discussions with active keyboard professionals about all manner of topics related to early keyboard music, jazz piano playing, keyboard improvisation, organ performance and pedagogy. In short, January will be your ‘KEY’ to music!

提到嗜好,我何止有,簡直可以說是集百般花樣於

一身,對任何新事物,無論是新開業的餐廳、新口

味的菜式,以至新出版的錄音,都能引起我的興

趣。雖然看似花心,但其實我非常專情,但凡我愛

上的,都盡情投入專心一意地對待。

例如大學時期,那時在學校流行的標準舞/拉丁舞,

受歡迎程度不下於到酒吧暢飲。酒精影響下,「醉

酒鬼」們有意無意的送來親暱或熱情的動作,總令

我措手不及也不知如何回敬。自然地,我選了標準

舞/拉丁舞。為此加入社交舞學會之餘,花了的時間

比練琴更多。

回想小學時期,父親週末總用上數小時於國畫上。

那是我早年遠赴英倫前他培養起來的嗜好,為了一

解我離家獨自海外生活的鄉愁,父親總會每週寄來

他的一幅畫作,轉眼一個學期完結,我那斗室內已

掛滿大大小小的荷花、金魚、雄雞和雀鳥,小小的

空間儼如一個小型展覽館。受父親感染,我逐漸培

養出對藝術的熱誠,美術課上亦因此得到如有神助

的進步。

決定學習音樂,對我來說是「嗜好」而優則「專

攻」的結果。彈琴和作曲是我自小的興趣,它每每

為我帶來自信和肯定,能把音樂作為我的專業,我

感到十分幸福。

更美好的事還陸續有來,2015年的1月份起,逢週

一至週五在「四時行樂」節目中,我會請來多位鍵

盤音樂方面的佼佼者,暢談不論是早期音樂、爵士

樂、即興演奏甚至管風琴音樂等等,一切有關這黑

白交錯的鍵盤的話題。想與我和嘉賓們同享音樂的

樂趣,萬勿錯過這新環節「香港鍵將」!
