Making Those Christmas Wishes Come True

For the 10th year in a row, CenterState Bank spread a little yuletide cheer to children in need of some Christmas magic.

Last week 17 kids from the Florida Baptist Children’s Home in Lakeland were showered with gifts from bank staff and several local sponsors.

This year’s was the smallest group of orphaned children that the bank has received, and it was also the first time they got to incorporate children under 12 years old.

Branch manager Bonnie Krummen created the event, inspired by Christmases past, both her own and those of someone very dear to her.

“My mother was raised in an orphanage. I can remember her telling me that the older she got, the less she got for Christmas,” said Krummen. “People who brought gifts to the orphanage only brought them to the younger children, so, to my mother, Christmas just didn’t really mean anything.”

Krummen and her staff wanted to ensure that Christmas still had a place in the hearts of kids in similar situations today.

Church Street Christmas Shines

Not even the dismal drizzle could dull the shine of this year’s Church Street Christmas. The rain failed to dampen the holiday spirit of the annual event, which was held last weekend.

All the churches that give the avenue its name welcomed guests inside and out of the weather for carols, worship, and

cocoa while residents occupied their front porches to watch passersby admire their plentiful lights and seasonal décor.

A few homes featured live music performed by local talent and, as he always has, Santa Claus (and the Mrs.) were waiting at the end of the line to visit with all of the good girls and boys.

Perhaps it is just the magic of the season, but several homes seemed to shine

brighter than they have before. Despite the rain this was one of Church Street’s most dazzling Decembers. This year’s event was one that music instructor Alison Graham will never forget, especially since it may be her last for some time.

Charles Larry Gilbert Jr., 50, of 13721 23rd St., was arrested by Dade City police on Dec. 8 on charges of robbery by sudden snatching; de-priving officer of pro-tection/communica-tion; and resisting ar-

rest with violence. Police were called to the 36000 block of State Road 52 in response to an individual wishing to be Baker acted. There they en-countered Gilbert who allegedly im-mediately took up a fighting stance and ignore officers’ commands to comply. Gilbert was ultimately taken to the ground as officers informed him that they were there to help. Gil-bert allegedly began struggling to free himself from custody, snatching an officer’s radio and depriving him of the means to call for assistance in the process. Officers finally had to deploy a Taser to subdue him. Once the radio was retrieved several back up units were called and Gilbert was ultimately taken into custody. He was later taken to the Pasco County jail.

Horace Barnes, 59, of Tampa, was arrested by Dade City police on Dec. 13 on charges of grand theft and ut-tering a forged instrument. While at CenterState Bank, 14045 Seventh St., Barnes allegedly handed the teller his driver’s license as well as a check made out to him in the amount of $998. While the teller called the business in question to verify the authenticity of the check, Barnes al-

legedly fled the scene. The teller did discover, after speaking with the victim, that the check was a forg-ery. Barnes was identified via video surveillance and his driver’s license, which he left at the scene, and was later apprehended.

Destin Deshawn Croson, 19, of 37145 Magnolia Ave., was arrested by Dade City police on Dec. 14 on charges of possession of a con-trolled substance and providing a false name or ID. Police

encountered Croson during a traffic stop at U.S. 98 Bypass and Church Avenue. After detecting the odor of marijuana, a search was conducted and yielded a blue pill bottle con-taining hydrocodone pills with the name of the prescribed person crossed out. Croson allegedly initial-ly provided the officer with a false identity but revealed his true name upon arrest. He was later taken to the Pasco County jail.

Tyrell Rashard Sanders, 32, of 39231 Summer Lake Road, was arrested by Dade City police on Dec. 14 on three active warrants; one out of Hernando County for OJ in Florida – writ of

bodily attachment; one out of Hamil-ton County for OJ in Florida – failure to appear for driving while license

suspended or revoked; and one out of Pasco County for failure to appear – driving while license suspended or revoked. Police encountered Sanders at his home in reference to active warrants. After they were confirmed Sanders was taken to the Pasco County jail.

Delanor Enyaw Stewart, 37, of 14806 12th St., was arrested by Dade City police on Dec. 15 on a Pasco County war-rant for failure to ap-pear. Police encoun-tered Stewart in ref-erence to an active

warrant. After the warrant was con-firmed he was taken to the Pasco County jail.

Terry Leon Stephens, 20, of 38318 Roosevelt Ave., was arrested by Dade City police on Dec. 13 on three Hillsborough County warrants for OJ in Florida – fail-ure to appear bur-glary; grand theft;

and driving while license suspended or revoked. Police encountered Ste-phens at the probation office, 14450 Seventh St. After the three active warrants were confirmed he was tak-en to the Pasco County jail.

Heather Barber, 54, of 37713 Jor-dan Road, was arrested by Dade City police on Dec. 11 on a charge of retail theft. Police responded to

Walmart, 12650 U.S. 301, in refer-ence to a retail theft. There they en-countered and apprehended Barber who stated, post-Miranda, that she had concealed items valued at $86 on her person. She was approached by loss prevention staff who recov-ered the items. She was later tres-passed from the store.

Calvin Moore, 29, of 20105 U.S. 301, was arrested by Dade City police on Dec. 6 on a Her-nando County war-rant for contempt of court – failure to pay child support. Police encountered

Moore at the probation office where an active warrant was confirmed. He was later taken to the Pasco County jail.

Ryman Surprises With New Roof

Christmas came a little early for Elaine Sharp , center, of Dade City. This is the third year her son Cole had entered the contest for a new roof. In the letter Cole wrote that the tin roof on their single-wide trailer needed repairs and how mom does her best to provide me and my brothers. Kevin Ryman and the Ryman Roofing team made this wish come true. Ryman said this is the 10th annual free roof giveaway, the only thing Elaine needs to do is tell us what color shingles she wants. Permits will be pulled and work will start after the holidays. Ryman Construction and Ryman Roofing has been serving Pasco County for more than 38 years. Photo by Chris Drews

Subdivision To Raise 170 Homes

A subdivision off State Road 52 across from Pasco High School will soon have 170 new homes following a Dec. 10 decision by city commissioners.

They unanimously approved a subdivision preliminary plan for Abbey Glenn II.

Esplanade Communities of Florida requested approval to subdivide 41.2 acres of property that is zoned PD-R (Planned Development Residential), according to an item on the commissioner’s Dec. 10 agenda.

The maximum number of lots approved under that classification is 170.

Typical lot sizes are 40 by 110 feet, 45 by 110 feet, 50 by 110 feet and 55 by 110 feet. The front lot setbacks will be 5 and 7.5 feet.

All the lots will have 10-foot rear setbacks.

At least 25 percent of the units must contain decorative cottage garage fronts and no more than 25 percent of the garages may protrude more than eight feet beyond the front roofline of the home.

The developer will be responsible for installing sidewalks and traffic calming devices along with developing private park areas.

Access to Abbey Glenn II will be from Kent Bradley Street and Adair Drive.

Osprey Pointe To Open In Fall 2020

A new, five-building, 110-unit, apartment complex that is being built in Dade City is scheduled to open in August.

Hennessey Construction Services is building Osprey Pointe at 13021 U.S. 301. One of Osprey Pointe’s buildings faces U.S. 301 next to the Advance Auto store. The other four buildings and a clubhouse will be constructed on the west side of the nearly eight-acre site.

HGT Osprey Pointe LLC paid $1.8 million for the property when they purchased it five months ago.

Osprey Pointe will feature one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, according

to Melanie Romagnoli of Dade City’s planning department.

Osprey Pointe will have slightly more than 200 parking spaces because the city requires a minimum of 2.1 lots per residential unit, Romagnoli said.

The estimated cost to construct the buildings is $13 million according to Dade City’s building department.

Osprey Pointe is the second apartment complex scheduled to open in Dade City in 2020. The other is The Arbours at Hester Lake, which will have 80 units available for low- to moderate-income families.

It is located on the south side of Willingham Avenue and on the west side of U.S. 301 behind Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Two Apartment Complexes Linked To U.S. 301

Work is progressing nicely on one of the buildings at Osprey Pointe apartments on U.S. 301.

wish list, they’d received a very meager catalog of wants; all practical items such as clothing or toiletries. Those kinds of desires just didn’t scream “Christmas.”

“I read those lists and I cried,” Krummen said. “I called the home and told them to tell these kids to wish. Whatever they wanted to have for Christmas, I wanted them to really wish for it and write it down.”

Now, with the help of several local families or businesses who generously sponsor this event, these kids are receiving some much sought after Christmas gifts and are reveling in the magic of the holidays. Some received all new wardrobes for school and video games, and others received toys or electronics. The Noon Rotary Club also

donated 40 care packages to the home designated for incoming children.

The bank receives a terrific turnout of participants each year who are happy to sponsor a child and supply their gifts, including kind folks from Kiefer’s Jewelers, Huss Drilling, the Noon Rotary, and more. Local residents Vera Auton and her husband, Bobby, have been sponsoring a child for the past four years and are already eager to do it for a fifth.

“Bobby and I don’t have any children, so this is a really nice experience for us. It’s so much fun to shop for the kids,” said Auton. “We always have such a good time doing this.”

“There’s a lot of love that goes into this Christmas,” Krummen said. “People who don’t even really know these kids give them so much so selflessly.”

A sponsor helped their kids dig into their presents, just as eager to see the looks on their faces than the kids were to open their packages.

Commentary

The Rest Of The Story

Dave Walters

It’s that time of year when I toss my cap aside and put on a Santa hat and pretend that I’m jolly Old St. Nick and hand out presents in my annual Christmas column.

I’ve been doing this column for more than 25 years and have been very giving through the years. Let’s see what gifts we have this year:

For Zephyrhills City Manager Billy Poe, I can’t help but get this guy an in-house utility billing operation that will keep the Zephyrhills water customers at ease.

Speaking of leaders in our community, I give Zephyrhills High School Principal Christina Stanley a year full of personal bests as she tackles her schedule full of marathons.

Our fearless leader with a badge, Derek Brewer, gets to watch his son claim more hockey championships on his way to a much-deserved scholarship. The number two guy in charge at ZPD, my friend Reggie Roberts, gets a spot in my back yard for his smoker during the best house-warming party in history.

Our Zephyrhills firefighters get a fair deal and everything they deserve in their transition in becoming members of Pasco County Fire Rescue.

The best stat-man in the business, Nolan Farnsworth, gets the best gift of all on Dec. 28 when he says “I Do” to the lovely Miss Ashley Oakley. For our buddy and county commissioner, Ronnie Oakley, this cowboy gets a new son-in-law. No pressure, Nolan.

The wild bunch at Pasco News Publications gives you the news every week. It’s my turn to give them something. Krista Black, our advertising sales pro, gets a trivia team that actually listens to her answers. I usually get my fellow news guy Joe Potter a car. This year, Joe gets a gas can and a gas gauge that works.

For my friend Max Zimmerman, you get plenty of rest, reporters who

actually make their deadlines and more importantly, a clean bill of health. For the woman who keeps the ship afloat, Linda Wood, you get to fully retire and enjoy some much deserved time away from the newspaper business.

Let’s look in the bag and see what’s in there for our publisher Chris Drews. This old Hoosier gets to clean out his closet and relinquish some of that Notre Dame gear that is just taking up space. I know a guy who would happily take it off your hands. Also, you get to cut back on all those hours you put into all of the papers.

If you look on the athletic fields and courts at Zephyrhills High School, you will see athletic trainer Nikki Fry tending to any an all injuries. No one is more dedicated to the Bulldogs than Nikki, so I will offer a gift from every parent who has child out there competing. Thank you Nikki for taking care of our athletes at ZHS.

For former wrestling coach Mark DeAugustino, I can offer you the gift of relaxation. You have stepped away under your own terms, so it’s now time to take a deep breath and relax.

To my friends at Zephyrhills Christian Academy, I give coach Spence Jones an opportunity to reflect on all of those games he coached his son, Malik Jones. That time is precious. ZCA coach, principal and pastor Mike Smith gets to get that state football title that has eluded him and the Warriors. ZCA’s awesome photographer Simone Howton gets a gig doing what she loves and get paid for it.

For those who know Adam Wilkes is very aware his love for his community and his family. Third on that list is his coveted Ford F150. I give you a few more pics of beautiful Fords to post on Facebook, because the 30 daily posts of trucks apparently aren’t enough.

Justin and Alyssa Davis gets a trophy case for all of his Fantasy Football trophies. Someday the winner of that league won’t have the last name of Davis.

My friend, volleyball coach and referee Joey Galyan gets clear scans and an opportunity to enjoy a stress-free life as he watches Jarron’s senior season of Bulldog football.

Anna Poe, who has the most beautiful soul, gets photo albums, wall space, frames and memory cards to hold all of those family photos she takes everyday. Not a day goes by the Anna doesn’t capture a precious memory through the lens of that Nikon.

Oh. Dave Giles. Santa gives you a Super Bowl title for your ZAL squad. For Damien Pickett, you get your own Max Preps page for your athletic family. This way you can keep stats, post film and keep us all aware of their schedule.

My friend and firefighter Tim Cunningham gets an accelerated calendar that will get you to your retirement day quicker.

To the MVP of Zephyrhills High School, Angela Huffman, you get a calendar with more time on it so you have some days to yourself that do not involve any activities at the school.

To my favorite Alabama fan Paul Chappell, you get a trip to the Iron Bowl. Hopefully you won’t see the Tigers pull off another upset.

For ZPD K9 officer Lorenzo Limoges, this new grandpa gets an unlimited supply of frequent flyer miles to go to Japan and see that baby grow up.

I look up the street to fellow reporter and war re-enactor Andy Warrener, who gets a time machine to go back to the era where he believes he was destined to live.

My ears are always happy when I hear performer Johnny Shelton belting out a song and strumming his guitar. I wish this talented young man a packed house when he plays.

What do you get a guy like Greg First, who has everything. I can’t give him an early retirement. He’s already retired. I can’t give him happiness. He’s the happiest guy on the planet. I can only give him more beautiful sunsets to enjoy with his lovely bride Jenny.

To my friend Gina Sanders, the Italian Princess at Capri Pizza, you get more trips to the Big Apple to spend more time with your “Honey Bun.”

For Jarrett Myers, a district softball title would look good under your tree. To Doyle Springfield, you get to eliminate the word Sarcoma from your vocabulary. For Tom Rufe, you get your

faith restored in Notre Dame. I could go on forever, but I need to

save some ink for everyone else. I want to wish all of our readers and my family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Buddy Bench Dedicated At Cox ElementaryExcited students gathered around Friday

afternoon as a Buddy Bench was dedicated at R.B. Cox Elementary School.

Principal Kimberly Natal explained the purpose of the bright blue bench that

had been placed in one of the school’s playground areas.

The Buddy Bench is a simple idea to foster friendship on the playground. Children who are feeling emotional or lonely can sit on the bench as a clear signal to others on the playground that they are

in need of social connection.Other students who see someone sitting

on the Buddy Bench should respond by going up to them and either talking with them or inviting them to join in playground activities, Natal said.

Pasco County Schools recently dedicated 12 other Buddy Benches at four other schools. They were all purchased through a Systems of Care grant opportunity.

Students at R.B. Cox and the other

schools will receive instructions on how to respond when they see a peer sitting on the bench.

Natal said she hopes to acquire another bench in the future.

When a school creates a visual signal that emotional and social connection is a priority in their community, it’s helping elementary students prioritize social connection, said a press release from Pasco County Schools.

Tyler Yearwood, left, and Baue Deshong, both fourth graders at Cox Elementary. They tried out the bench just before it’s dedication.

15 years. Word has spread quickly that Graham will be moving to Atlanta soon, leaving many to wonder what is to become of the annual carolers.

“It’s both hard and easy to imagine that this could be my last year in Dade City,” Graham said. “It’s 80 percent really hard and 20 percent ‘thank goodness!’ I am ready for a little break.”

Graham is set to move once her house sells, so there is no definite date for her departure, but she already has some prospective replacements showing interest in keeping her musical groups performing.

“I am going to miss the families; all the girls and their parents. We’ve all gotten so close,” Graham said. “It’s going to be terribly hard to say goodbye.”

When it comes time for her to depart Dade City, Graham will take with her what all other attendees took home with them after an evening on Church Street: enough fun, festive memories to last throughout the upcoming year.

Fasano Office Donates $7,680 For Breast Cancer ResearchPasco County Tax Collector Mike Fasano’s five offices

partnered to help the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation to raise $7,678 during October. The money will be used to help increase awareness of breast cancer, its symptoms and treatments.

October, which was national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, was the perfect time to feature the sale of the Foundation’s “End Breast Cancer” specialty tag, Fasano said.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in Florida (excluding skin cancer). It is estimated that about 12,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

The sale of the “End Breast Cancer” specialty license plates were promoted as well as voluntary check-off donations on automobile registrations. Forty plates were sold in October. Combined with cash donations, a total of $7,678 was raised to help “End the Suffering Caused by Breast Cancer.”

“The relationship we have with the Pasco County Tax Collector’s Office is one that the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation values greatly,” said Tracy Jacim, Director of Community Empowerment. “The support they give us allows us to further our mission to end the suffering caused by breast cancer by funding research that will change the breast cancer.”

“The Florida Breast Cancer Foundation has done a remarkable job over the years to not only raise awareness of the needs of breast cancer patients, but to fund organizations that are working to find better treatments and ultimately a cure,” Fasano said. “The Foundation

encourages regular screenings to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, for both women and men. Thank you

to a very generous community that supported our efforts to help find a way to end a disease that afflicts so many.”

Ashley Legg, customer service representative, left, is shown with Linda McNally, office manager of the Dade City office; Deni Murphy, customer service representative; Traci Jacim, director of community empowerment for the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation; Greg Giordana, assistant tax collector for special projects and communications; Carol Margolis, director of the Southeast Region of the Florida Breast Cancer Foundation; and Liz Riley, customer service supervisor of the Dade City office. Milestone Home Dedicated

Tears of joy were shed last week during the dedication of a new home for Patrick and Carla Gude of Dade City.

This is the first home they have ever bought, Carla said Monday.

The Gude’s three-bedroom, one bath handicap accessible home at 37409 Davis St. is the 150th built by Habitat for Humanity of East & Central Pasco since its founding 25 years ago.

She and Patrick had been renting a home when her father suggested they contact Habitat to see if they qualified for a home. “I didn’t think we could do it,” she said.

They contacted Habitat in February, and have worked toward purchasing their new home ever since, Carla said.

A family must complete 400 hours of sweat equity before they are able to move into a home. A group of college students volunteered about 200 hours of those hours by working on their home

after learning about Habitat at the 2019 Pasco County Fair, Carla said.

“They did it in just a few days,” Carla said.

The couple earned some of their hours by passing out food at Publix and Walmart. They earned more hours by providing informational materials about Habitat at Lowes and other area locations.

“We have worked so hard with Habitat,” Carla said.

Habitat homes are financed through interest free mortgages. The proceeds of those mortgages are used to help finance construction of future Habitat homes.

“We were happy and excited when our home was dedicated,” Carla said. A few tears were shed, “but they were happy ones.”

“To own something is really different,” Carla said.

The couple received several symbolic housewarming gifts during the dedication ceremony. They included bread, salt, a

candle, quilt and a Bible.A ribbon cutting ceremony was then

held and it was followed by an open house during which those who attended could see the Gude family’s new home.

She was very happy when she walked through the front door of the new home and saw a Christmas tree in

the living room. The local Habitat affiliate is part of

Habitat for Humanity International that was founded by Millard and Linda Fuller in 1976. President Jimmy Carter, 95, who served from 1976-1980, has been actively involved in Habitat for more than 40 years.

Browne Honored For Flag

The Jim Browne Chevrolet Buick GMC dealership received an award last week for the proper use, correct display and patriotic presentation of the flag of the United States of America. Congress adopted the United States Flag Code in 1942 and established advisory rules for the display and care of our national flag which is a symbol of respect, honor and patriotism, said the Echebucsassa Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, whose members presented the award. They noted that motorists traveling north or south on U.S. 301 cannot miss the giant American fly proudly flying by the dealership. The award was presented to Sam Rhineberger, general manager, on Dec. 16. Photo Provided

This year their employees and members delivered a Merry Christmas to 31 people in seven families.

SACFCU is proud to be a part of such a generous community.
