The existing water supply scenario

6 The quantity of water is insufficient with very low

pressure6 The customers use jet-pumps to draw water from

networks

6 The quality of water is not safe for drinking6 The customers use to boil water for drinking

6 House connections are leaky at the meter &

connection point – poor workmanship

6 Customers are reluctant to pay the water bill

3rd NRW Reduction Training, VietNam. 16

The objectives of improvements

6 To supply sufficient water on 24-hr basis under

reasonable pressure6 To ensure the good quality of water

6 To reduce the NRW by reducing physical &

commercial losses6 To enhance customers Willingness to Pay

6 To benefit the customers by eliminating the use of

jet-pumps and need to boil water

The mass awareness campaign

6 A leaflet was circulated in the area describing the

benefits of establishing DMAs6 Many formal & informal meetings held in the offices,

mosques & customers’ houses

6 The customers were requested to cooperate duringthe household surveys & other physical works.

The physical & socio-economic surveys

6 After collection of the existing maps & data an

extensive survey of the network was carried out6 Customers’ households were surveyed to obtain

information on – a) Functioning / accuracy of meters,

b) Status of bill payment & c) Status of houseconnections

6 Other socio-economic information

The problems in designing & establishment ofDMA

6 There are 5 nos. of inflow points & 1 source of supply(Production Well) – more gate valves & bulk meters

6 In some cases, there are 2 parallel lines – difficult to manage

flow and pressure6 In most cases, the pressure is very low

6 House connections & meters are placed at high depths –difficult for reading meters

6 Houses at distances (30m -100m) took connections throughlong spaghetti lines

6 Around 80% houses pumps water through jet-pumps

6 In 50% houses, there are no under-ground reservoirs – pumps

water directly to overhead reservoirs.6 Most of connections are leaky (use of MS clamps)

The flow rates at the inflow/ outflow points

6 There are 5 nos. of inflow points & 1 source of supply(Production Well) – more gate valves & bulk meters6 Inflow-1 (Production well): 3800 m3/day – only inflow

6 Inflow-2: Inflow comes from outside when Production well isnot operated – a bypass to be installed

6 Inflow-3: At present it is closed. In future may be used as aninflow.

6 Inflow-4: Only Inflow (860 m3/day).

6 Inflow-5: Only Outflow (360m3/day).

All bulk meters match with the size of pipes. All bulk meters are mechanical type.
