Welcome!

There are plenty of new alternatives, destinations and places popular with Finns themselves. We have wanted to highlight small places and little treasures where you will feel that you really are in quintessential Finland, in the countryside, small villages, down by the water, in the shade of forests and in the peace of the wilderness. We have also wanted to highlight new service providers and companies that have been operating on the domestic market, but have the expertise and professional skill to serve your customers too.

The National Cycling Routes: Finland’s most recognised and best cycling routes that go either from town to town or as circular routes in areas of water. There is more information on this on the fol-lowing spread, pages 4–5. See also www.OutdoorsFinland.com.

Trip Suggestions: hidden treasures, new areas and products, which we have mapped, studied and approved. These are well-known routes in Finland that independently-minded cyclists have already been pedalling along for many years.

Package: A ready-priced product about which you can contact the producer directly. In most cases, almost everything is ready-planned, but some also offer, for example, accommodation choices of different levels of comfort and alternative routes, such as that shown on page 9: Picturesque Western Uusimaa.

Mountain biking: is mostly done at well-known tourist destinations where there are many different routes and different levels of accommodation available. A new product is a ‘once in a lifetime’ experience offered at Utsjoki, where you can cycle along ancient well-worn paths in the dazzling scenery of the northern wilderness.

COMe AND CYCLe IN FINLAND!

Our product manual is a compila-

tion of the best mountain bike and

touring cycle routes in Finland.

Finnish nature is unique and diverse.

Few countries have so much to offer

as Finland. Available cycling routes

cover archipelago Finland, lakeland

Finland, the forests near the eastern

border, the Finland of tree-covered

hills and villages and the Finland

of fells. There are both easy routes

suitable for families and challenging

ones for adventure-seekers.

The cycling season begins in spring

as nature awakes and time proceeds

toward the period of white nights,

when the rest of Finland wakes

up. Cyclists can continue into late

autumn, enjoying the beautiful

explosion of colours of the autumn

foliage.

The cycling manual belongs to the

Outdoors Finland series of product

manuals, which also includes hiking

and canoeing manuals. The General

Information section has facts about

Finland. The manuals have been

produced by the Outdoors Finland

project of the Finnish Tourist Board.

HIGHLIGHTS

Villages, towns, market squares and eventsAfter the long winter an intense

spring and brilliant summer begin,

and people want to get everything

out of them that they can. Local

residents, cottagers and holiday-

makers fill the centres of towns

and villages. Things are happening

everywhere.

White nightsEven in late summer, the sun only

sets for a few hours and the day

does not turn towards night until

the autumn. As the temperature

gently cools on bright summer

evenings, cycling is an experience

that you can get nowhere else.

Finland of contrastsThe Finland of archipelagos

and waterways changes into

the Finland of primeval forests

and tree-covered hills as you go

towards the eastern border and

to the north. The wilderness of

the fells of Northern Lapland offer

quiet emptiness as a contrast to

the populated cultural settings of

Southern Finland.

SaunaAlmost every Finnish home has a

sauna, and going to the sauna and

swimming in natural waters are

an integral part of summertime in

Finland. Try it yourself and wash

away the dust and fatigue of your

cycling trip in the sauna. It’s a

great way to do it!
