Jacobus (Koos) Coenraad Brandt

PROFILE I am a seasoned, hands-on, business executive with experience on a wide front, and a passion for success, change, technology and development of people. My career started with very technical software development, compilers, simulations, moving on to databases, business solutions and strategic consulting, in the roles of project lead, manager, consultant, project manager and programme manager. This invariably resulted in new business ventures, and a good dose of business management, regulations and contract work. This in turn also resulted in some very profitable ventures and projects for the consulting companies and service providers involved. There were also some small private companies along the way, such as Wood Expressions (custom furniture manufacturer, 50 staff factory), DigiTalk Dental and Sports (digital medical pamphlets - video and animation, sports video analysis and coaching), Branko (pc sales and assembly) and Nunti Data Systems (locomotive data logging sensors and devices, and maintenance management systems). I am a business professional capable of working at all levels of organisations and projects. I am especially strong on contract management and governance, and on making project managers aware of their responsibilities, and I typically bring strong leadership and motivation to any organisation I join. My interest is on guiding people to success, and working with project managers to ensure they deliver success in the interest of the business. I am driven by opportunities to solve problems, and to look for continuous improvement. I've learned that one can solve problems by putting the right team together, and challenge them with just sufficient direction to come up with the proper solution. This way of problem solving is as satisfying as doing it by yourself. I have also learned that I have invested hugely in developing my skills, and have gained experience of many related areas, and that the best way to tap into that investment would be to share that in an environment where I can lead and manage people to deliver on various projects and ideas simultaneously. I thrive on being part of a brain's trust, to explore and think about strategy and ideas, and solve problems at the strategic and business direction level. I need a team to work with, where key members can fill the roles which I cannot, but where we can share experience and insight to move forward. Since moving into the senior and management ranks, I kept abreast of programming developments through software development of various smaller projects in Visual Basic, VBA, AppForge, PHP, JS, Java, Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, SQLite, XML, Ruby, Rails, ObjectiveC, Swift, Xojo, Xamarin and SmallTalk, exploring e-solutions in the web based application/database servers with mobile front ends, technology based platforms for communities. Also explored test driven development and using Selenium as an automation tool for testing web based applications, like IBM Maximo. At present I am working on a service offering around Enterprise Management of Project Management, based on a set of Project and Portfolio Management technologies, standards and guidelines, to assist organisations bringing project managers into a guided and controlled performance based environment with strong governance and performance reporting.

My passion at the moment is for disruptive business models such as Platform Economies

(Aggregation and Buyer Centric Designs, Alibaba and Uber) as new ventures with low barriers to

entry compared to the incumbents, but also for Corporate IT to understand how these new channels

will disrupt them, and what they should do about it.

I’ve spend the last year exploring how the trends are changing the way disruptive technologies enter

the marketspace and how people open up new opportunities, not even envisaged by the technology

developers, and especially how the iTunes, Alibaba, Airbnb, Uber, etc. players have restructured the

playing field, and how that creates a rapid result when they hit it spot-on, or fail.

I have explored the state of various industries, markets, and can see that many of these will change

dramatically over the near term, dropping middle men, automating decision making and advise,

changing requirements. I can apply this thinking in any industry, with open minded industry

incumbents. Most of these opportunities will not be done by current incumbents, because the

traditional thinking is to grow via acquisitions, more of the same or to compete via own channels,

where the market actually wants ease of interaction across the variety available.

To make platforms successful they need to bring unique value to both sides, producers and

consumers, building the communities through unique value propositions and tools, search capabilities

and data aggregation, but mostly the platform needs to understand and analyse its own data to

determine patterns, opportunities and threats.

I am looking for an innovative company to join to explore and deliver using these new ideas.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY 1994 – Current The ORION Business Holdings

Founder, Managing Director, Consultant Directed, developed and managed a team of IT and HR professionals to deliver consulting and contracting services to Telkom SA, Sita, Arivia, Nedcor, Theba Bank, Powertech IST and various smaller companies. Since 2011 activated supply contracts for specialists to IBM, Eskom and ABB/Ventyx/Mincom. Established partnerships with various companies (ICTWorx, EnterpriseWorx, Caridon, PraxisIT/Ribex, Reverside, ARCS, EPI-USE, Performanta, Hutech, Meta-Performance, FUSION-IS, WebIntellect, Anchor Consulting, Opteamix, Vetasi, Barnstone) to partner on contracts for specialised skills/talent at Eskom, Telkom, Standard Bank, Anglo American, Wesizwe Mining and other customers. Established a Level 2 BBBEE certification and focus on Professional services, with capacity to execute in 2015.

1989 – 1994 Business Connexion

Principal Consultant/Director Joined Computer Specialist Group (CSG), and became a director when CSG merged with COMCON. Chose to become a principal consultant again when COMCON-CSG merged with Data Trust to form QData Consulting. Developed QMethod as the project methodology for COMCON-CSG and QData projects, sold and implemented the methodology at Telkom SA and SA Post Office. Various projects in Banking, Insurance, Government, Telecommunications and Defence.

1986 – 1989 Accenture (Arthur Andersen)

Senior Consultant/Manager Technical reviewer for all database projects, developed and implemented global ADABAS Natural standards and training, international lead for Andersen Technical Services Organisation on ADABAS Natural. Recruitment and training of staff and customer staff on ADABAS Natural, project management and systems design. Sales and proposal development for all Government projects, IT strategy consultant.

1983 – 1986 Atomic Energy Corporation (Nucor)

Systems Analyst/DBA Project Leader/Manager Established and lead the DBA group on ADABAS Natural. Implemented and decommissioned a COBOL manufacturing (MRP) system, and replaced with a custom build ADABAS Natural system. Designed and implemented various databases for HR, payroll, finance and maintenance management.

1981 – 1982 SA Defense Force

Senior Consultant/National Service Managed the procurement and sourcing of aircraft maintenance parts for the border operations. Business analyst for the logistics control and operations management systems. Developed a statistics analysis system (Apple II, Pascal) to establish aircraft incident patterns and to form a base for aircraft budget and procurement programs.

Contract Assignments 2015 - Standard Bank CIB (Parttime Contract - Anchor Consulting)

Project/Programme Management Advisory Services Reviewed new Business Online Programme for Standard CIB to recommend improvements in managing programme and partner interdependencies. Also reviewed the programme structure, inclusive of culture, and processes to identify process improvement opportunities. Review and study of solution architecture to understand interdependencies between systems and technology.

2015 - Current World Bank (Parttime Contract current)

Principal Consultant/Technical Advisor Mineworkers Database Contracted as consultant to World Bank as Technical Advisor for the design of a Southern African Regional Database of Mineworkers and Ex-Mineworkers to support the SADC program for addressing TB in the Mines. This program involves a stakeholders group of all mining companies, mineworker labour organisations, all health facilities in the participating countries and 2.5 million mineworkers and ex-mineworkers and their families/dependents, plus all the governmental entities providing health and compensation services and benefits to this group of workers, such a legal counsel, brokers, recruitment agencies, etc.

2014 World Bank (Contract Completed)

Principal Consultant, Project Manager, Consortium Business Manager URSA Mineworkers Mapping Phase 1 (National TB Program) Orion obtained the contract from BayTechnologies as technical implementation partner work for this project at URSA (University Research South Africa), funded by World Bank. The objective of the project was to identify the areas/locations where mineworkers, ex-mineworkers, and their families, are mostly located and to map the health facilities within South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland. This was a first phase of a complete mapping project to map specific locations of the individuals in mineworker population in order to improve service delivery and address the TB burden.

2011 IBM/Eskom (Contract Completed)

SAP Infrastructure Roll Out Programme Manager Contracted to manage IBM infrastructure implementation for a major SAP development at Eskom. The infrastructure consisted of Power servers from IBM, Blade Centres and SAN directors and storage farms, implemented using virtualisation and high availability technology.

2008 – 2011 Powertech IST (Contract)

Project Manager, Business Development Contracted to manage a Powertech IST Maximo implementation in consortium with Arivia.kom (acquired by TSystems) and Bytes Technology, with Programme Management supplied by Price Waterhouse Coopers (PWC). Initially planned as a decentralized Maximo

V6 implementation, the project was extended to incorporate Maximo V7 in a Centralised installation, with a large scale CIM@E SOA integration to Eskom SAP, GIS, Smallworld and 13 Legacy Systems. Project budget R150m.

1994 – 2005 Contracted to Telkom SA

Principal Consultant/Project Manager Contracted to establish, train and guide a Telkom User Requirements Team of 5 Subject Matter Experts and 3 IT Experts plus a Project Manager to analyse and determine User Requirements for the complete Telkom Customer Business System (Customers, Sales, Services, Support, Installations, Network, Billing, Collections, Directories) for Voice and Data Services. Stayed on as IT and Project Management Consultant through the entire RFI, RFP Feasibility, Acquisition, Implementation, Customisation, Roll Out, and Operation phase of this project. Highly involved in Vendor and Contract Management of suppliers. Budget R700m (CBS), 300 plus resources. Budget iCARE (R2.8bn) (Orion 50 Consultants on Project, at least 30% are still at Telkom today)
