Team leader of the research project on the large scale application of renewable energy
sources at Portela de Sacavém (Loures), a residential área with 14000 inhabitants. This project was done in collaboration with the WS-Energy and SunWind companies. It lead to the creation of the Cátedra Júnior FCT at IST and was an important step in the creation of the Master Degree in Energy and Energy Management at IST.

Comments to the curriculum Pedagogical component: During all my career as university professor in Portugal and abroad my pedagogical skills have been appreciated as can be demonstrated, in particular, by the very positive student reports in the context of the QUC quality system of IST. I was responsible for the creation of the two disciplines of programming in LEFT/MEFT to which I applied an innovative teaching technology based on real problem solving. The MEFT students are presently considered the best programmers of IST up to the end of the 1st Cycle (as publicly recognized not only by the professors of the Master in Computer engineering and by the professors in Applied Mathematics and Computation). The programming course I created (based on the C language) is now part of the first book I wrote (see Publication List). In what concerns pedagogical management it encompasses two important phases. One one hand I was part of the steering committee of the Master Degree in Biomedicine of IST during the period immediately following its creation. During this time several important decisions had to be made and I helped to justify and implement many of these decisions.
On the other hand, for sure one of the most important and exciting periods of my career in this area was associated to my mandate as Vice-Coordinator (in practice, Coordinator) and Coordinator of the Master Degree in Physical Engineering (MEFT). I was responsible for for the transition to the Bologna Protocol and by the management and public awareness of this Master degree. When I started my mandate the last element to enter the Degree in 1st year had an average mark of 14.7/20 and the degree as a whole had a rate of occupation and permanence of the students (that is, of non transition to another degree at IST or elsewhere) of 50%. When I left office the same average mark had risen to 17.4/20. MEFT is presently, by far, the most prestigious course in Physics and Physical Engineering in the country and the one with highest international recognition in this area. The facts corroborate this conclusion: a good part of the measures responsible for the present success of MEFT were implemented during my term as Coordinator. When I finished my term the occupancy level of the numerus clausus was (and still is) 100% in the first phase (with more than 90% of the candidates having taken MEFT as their first choice) and a student permanence rate of ~100%. It became one of the most prestigious courses of IST and has presently the highest entrance marks in the country (18.52/20 in 2016). It was during my Coordination term that this degree was recognized by Ordem dos Engenheiros (the Engineering Association) a unique characteristic in Portugal in what concerns Physical Engineering. I was also responsible for a paradigmatic change of this Master Degree which started a very strong connection to high technology companies, consulting companies, and finantial intitutions which ensures 100% employment for the students -- another unique feature in the country. I created, in particular a program of Summer internships in companies for MEFT students. I was also responsible for several initiatives (Colloquia, seminars, etc.) which continue to this day. I created two prestigious Professor positions in the Physics Department of IST:
A one year Full Professor position funded by Fundação Caloute Gulbenkian which was occupied during the whole period by Professor Helmut Satz (Bielefeld University). Professor Helmut Satz is the world top expert in Heavy Ion Physics and Matter at extreme conditions. The course he taught at IST, attended by a large number of students of LEFT, has been published by Springer Verlag.
A four year Assistant Professor position funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and by the WS-Energia company. This was the first professor position to be funded by a private company in the photovoltaic area and had a central role not only in the creation of the scientific area in MEFT, but also had a precursor role in the creation of the Master Degree in Energy and Energy Management at IST. This position was occupied (through an international call) by Doctor Carlos Silva who presently holds a permanent Associate Professor contract at IST.
Finally I should emphasize an intense outreach activity which I maintain for the general public and in numerous public and private schools throughout the country.
Scientific component: My scientific career has two parts, one markedly theoretical and another markedly experimental. In the theoretical component I made pioneering studies in the area of Lattice Gauge Theories (I was the first Portuguese physicist to work in this area), Statistical Physics, Strong Interaction Phenomenology, and Complex Systems (in particular Techniques of Multivariate Analysis, TMVA, when they were basically unknown in Particle Physics). The experimental component coincides with my connection to the ALICE and CMS experiments of the LHC Program at CERN and to the NA60 experiment of the SPS Heavy Ion program at CERN, of which I was one of the proponents and in which I had a central role in its execution. At the end of 1990 decade LIP (the Portuguese Laboratory for Particle Physics) decided to abandon the Heavy Ion Program in which it had a considerable success with the NA38, NA50 and NA51 experiments of the SPS program. At that time it was necessary to pursue this effort and a proposal at CERN – initially proposed by Prof. Louis Kluberg (École Polythechnique/LLR) and Prof. Peter Sonderegger (CERN) – the extremely innovative idea of complementing the NA50 setup with a pixel detector spectrometer (at that time being developed by the LHC experiments) in the target region. As consequence of a certain amount of work that I had done with some collaborations at CERN I was contacted by these two researchers and by Dr. Carlos Lourenço (CERN, which became the first spokesperson of the NA60 experiment) in view of constructing a proposal for a new experiment. The proposal was approved by the SPSC and the CERN management and became the NA60 Collaboration. For me it was a high risk bet, but one of potential very high gain. I mamnaged to create from scratch a complete experimental group which took the responsibility of a considerable ensemble of key sectors in the experiment both on the instrumentation and analysis sides. For the success contributed decisively the connection with persons placed in key positions at CERN and the existence of a pool of excellent students of LEFT/MEFT (the number reached, at the more important steps, to more than a dozen students) which I managed to congregate around this project. It is important to stress that NA60 was the only CERN experiment in which IST and CFTP were the sole Portuguese institutional partners. It is also important to stress that the total funded amount of the corresponding FCT projects amounted to ~500000 € and were the biggest projects that IST had to manage between 2001 and 2005. They were among the biggest projects ever at IST. The Portuguese group corresponded to ~25% of the NA60 Collaboration (something that never happened in any of the other Collaborations in which Portugal is or was involved at CERN) and was responsible for ~75% of the activities of the Collaboration. The huge success of NA60 in Heavy Ion Physics is therefore largely a consequence of this unique characteristic. Obviously, as the active period of NA60 reached its conclusion, several formal invitations from ALICE (directly by the then spokesperson Jurgen Schukraft due to the research connection I maintained with the ALICE Collaboration for some time), ATLAS and CMS were made to me and my group to enter one of these Collaborations. The work conditions, national interest and usefulness to LIP (which meanwhile invited me and my group to join the institution) and the means put at disposal of the group lead us to join the CMS Collaboration. The group diversified then its activity towards Higgs Physics, top quark Physics and Hadronic and Heavy Ions Physics. In CMS I developed with Dr. Pietro Faccioli (a FCT postdoc which I supervise since 2009), with the aim of solving the 30 year old and persistent problem of quarkonium formation, a totally innovative formalism to measure quarkonium polarization. This formalism is presently used by all experiments
to measure the polarization of these particles (and not only that). With this breakthrough it is finally start to envision in a near future the solution to this mystery. I keep a parallel theoretical (phenomenological) work together with the experimental activity which I develop within the CMS Collaboration at the LHC.
