Brilliant Bailey Blasts Blues

Bailey Morgan hit FIVE goals at Norsemen to help the 5th XI come back from an early 0‐3 deficit to win 7‐5 in an incredible game at Edmonton. The early kick‐off resulted in a 2 minute warm‐up window leaving the Vamps cold and allowing Norsemen a head start. But Darren’s Boys were not to be undone and bounced back to level things before half time.

Elsewhere the 1st XI achieved their first league win of the season over BB Eagles with Ryan Harrington bagging a brace to join Morgan and Omar Karmali as joint top scorer with six goals.

The 2s were less successful, suffering a bit of a thumping at Civil Service to remind them just how tough the top flight can be.

The 3s bowed out after extra time to an Old Ignatians side who were much improved from pre‐season to end their AFA Cup campaign while the 4s dropped their first points of the season in a 3‐3 draw away to Norsemen.

The 6s and 7s were in Haringey Cup action with a win a piece leaving things all square with AP. The 6s went down 1‐3 in their match while the 7s made up for last week’s defeat away to Lyonians with a 2‐0 win and a clean sheet to boot!

Back down to earth It was a poor return for Rood Wit this week with all three teams losing. The 1st team lost out to Copain by the odd goal in five and the Vets also lost narrowly, 1‐2 away to Select.

The result in the 2nd team game was rather more convincing, however, with Rood Wit going down 3‐8 to Albatros. With 13 against in their first two games it looks like it could be a long season for the 2s, but they might well think the same about us after yesterday’s 2nd XI result!

Needing to pick up our season after a difficult start The 3rd team started a lot better than in previous weeks in this cup fixture. By keeping good shape, winning most of the aerial battles and second balls and pressing Ignatians well we had most of the opening twenty minutes, our chances coming from two early corners with MATT BREEN coming close with headers from great deliveries from NICK MORIATY. As the game went on we were showing good threat from corners with JIAN this time heading over from another great delivery from NICK. Our high pressing was paying off and after good pressing forcing a misplaced pass from Ignatians, the ball fell to JIAN on the right, who took a good first touch out of his feet and scored with a low direct strike from 30 yards into the far corner of Ignatians net.

After that we dropped slightly inviting Ignatians pressure on us for a spell after our goal culminating in a great save from keeper STEVE FANUS, who tipped the ball over the bar from a long range Ignatians effort, and we rode our luck five minutes later allowing Ignatians a counter attack with a shot at the end from Ignatians right winger scrambling past our post. ... continued over ...


The pressure continued until the end of the first half but we managed to see it off with double save from Steve on the stroke of half time. We were happy to see out the half still 1‐0 up to be honest and needed to raise our game in second half to the level that we started the game.

KYLE MASON came close to putting us two nil up early in the second half, forcing a good save after receiving a pass from tommy just outside Ignatians box. On 55 mins we came close again from a great throw in from Josh Law, who was having a stormer at right back, which seemed to bounce for an age before an effort from Jian was deflected and unfortunately came to nothing.

From then on the game became a scrappy affair with Ignatians coming out on top in chances created, scoring with a long rang effort that hit the roof of our net past our outstanding keeper STEVE, who couldn’t do anything about it as his vision was obscured by three men. It was to stay that way until the final whistle forcing the game into extra time. It wasn't looking great for us as we entered injury time with tired legs and Ignatians ending the game slightly on top.

In extra time Ignatians scored early on from a strike that deflected past STEVE and despite a late fight back, the highlight of which was a an attack down the right ending in a great low cross from TOMMY PIDGEON, but frustratingly nobody could keep up with tommy to get the end of the cross and apply a finish! We were unable to get a late goal and this closely fought cup game ended 2‐1 to Ignatians.

Positives can be taken again and if we learn to be more ruthless when on top of games our fortunes will turn around soon!

Starting the day with 13 players quickly dwindled to a bare 11 after some last minute cry offs leaving us to reshuffle the pack somewhat I won't mention any names...... FORDY, although to be fair to him he does get bad hangovers!!

With a good spirit around the changing room and a good warm up I expected us to start quickly but with 5 minutes we were 1‐0 down after Norsemen corner was whipped into the near post and a bullet header into the corner.

It then took us a while to get our rhythm and Norsemen offered little other than the occasional long throw in on a small pitch which we dealt with for the most part. We then started to take control of the game with WILL & CARL a real threat on the flanks peppering the goal with shots but then JJ starting it get on the ball more I their half and after He burst down the left hand side with time to give the Norsemen subs a bit of stick too, squared the ball to CARL who smashed the ball into the top corner from 20 yards out for the equaliser 1‐1! We finished the half strong and should have made use of our dominance but it was all square at half time.

In the 2nd half we struggled to take control of the game and neither side really dominated & it was half way into the half where that long throw come to haunt us and rained confusion in the box with some hesitation & we were 2‐1 down. It's how you react to this is what show a character of a side and within 5 minutes we back level after some good work by jazzy who squared the ball to MIKE NWOSU who stabbed in from close range 2‐2!

When we should have capitalised on our equaliser we once again shot ourselves in the foot and after the ball broke loose to Norsemen player he managed to squeeze ball passed John & myself sliding in to make it 3‐2 to Norsemen. We didn't deserve to lose this game and after JOHN pulled off a a top drawer save which was heading to the top corner helped us earn a point away from home as within a few minutes we earned a free kick half way in the Norsemen half and with what CARL will claim he meant, chipped to ball into the middle of the net past the flaying keeper not unlike the Ronaldhinio free kick vs England in the 2002 World Cup that deceived David Seaman, unorthodox but we will take it 3‐3! We need to ban the celebration of dancing after scoring as it takes up far too much energy!!

A decent start to the season with a win & a draw bring on old finches next week! COYVS !!!

After agreeing to a 2pm kick off and asking for a little bit of time to warm up as I thought we had agreed the ref gave us 2 minutes. So we went into the game cold and off the pace and within 4 minutes we were 1‐0 down when their winger crossed the ball and it ended up in the top corner leaving GINGER with no chance. We kicked off and again were straight under the cosh with Norsemen setting a high tempo and within 5 more minutes it was 2‐0 when there striker pile drived an effort into the bottom corner which GINGE got his hand to but there was too much power. Our 3rd kick off in 7 mins and we were shell shocked and it only took a further 8 mins for Norsemen to be 3‐0 up again a great effort which clipped the post and went in again GINGE had no chance but almost saved it.

Our 4th kick off and we were 15 mins into the game and I was wondering just how much of a hammering we were going to get, but no we were now warmed up and fighting for every ball and with MARK, BAILEY and JACK starting to click into gear it wasn't long before BAILEY had rounded their keeper and slotted the ball home 3‐1. After the kick off our tails were now up and we knew that if we played our stuff we would win within 10 mins we won a free kick on the edge of the box as there keeper handled outside the box stopping BAILEY from having an open goal. Booking. BAILEY stepped up to the free kick and smashed it into the top corner.

3‐2, game on now and after some neat football bailey was through on goal again but this time he put it wide we continued to battle and this finally paid off and BAILEY scored again getting a first half hat trick 3‐3 and we were playing uphill but the half was nowhere near one way and GINGE had to pull off some great saves and you could see he grew in confidence as the half went on half time.

We started the second half thinking we were going to steam roll them as we were now downhill but we! Got a shock and were 4‐3 down after a quick break away and again GINGE could do nothing as they put it right in the bottom corner. So we had shown great character in coming back from 3‐0 down and that felt like a body blow but again this team don't give up and we went on the attack and again BAILEY dribbled down the left and along the goal line around the keeper and then reversing the ball back to the keepers near post scoring his 4th goal. 4‐4 now the next goal was a bit special as jack bailey and Alfie put together about 8 passes which took them past the back line and goal keeper for ALFIE to have a tap in 5‐4 and we were finally in the lead for the first time, but not for long as within a minute clement got muscled off the ball by the corner and there winger headed towards goal with GINGE closing him down he chipped it to far post where their winger was waiting unmarked to nod home 5‐5.

We kicked off for the 6th time and went straight on the attack by this point I brought on MARK NWUSO who how can I put it, had a big impact on us co! Ming out on top and after some good hold up play he put BAILEY through and BAILEY rounded the keeper stopping the ball on the line and waiting for the keeper to come back to him before he tapped it in 6‐5 to us and this time we weren't going to let the lead slip. Norsemen were shell shocked and we went for kill and this time it was BAILEY laying MARK in on goal who took the shot early and slotted the ball home from the edge of the area 7‐5 and after that we played out the remainder of the game.

This was one of the worst I have seen us play. We were second best to everything and we let AP 6s to play their game throughout the 90 minutes. Even though we scored the first goal, there was not enough fluency in our game. GEORGE had couple of shouts for penalty early on and, for one of them the referee admitted in making a mistake but when the same thing happened on our side he did not make the same mistake and blew for a penalty. SHAHRAM manage to get a hand to the penalty but it still went in and there was new confidence in APs game. We gradually got worse and never managed to find our rhythm the fact that we were playing two in middle and AP had three did cause us problems, but having been let down by a few call offs, we were reduced to a 12 man squad; this did not help us either.

In the second half we conceded a goal from an atrocious goalkeeping mistake. We had to chase the game for most of the second half and close to the end of the half we conceded another goal that made the job easy for APs.

The only positive I could say from our performance in this game is even though we were absolutely terrible to what I have seen us play. We lost 3‐1 and conceded two goals, one from a penalty spot and another from a very bizarre mistake. I am sure next week we will do a lot better.

After defeat tasting defeat last week, it was important for the super 7's to get some points on the board. Another loss today and we could start thinking about removing 'super' away from the super 7's. With the team we had (which would rival any team in the whole SAL) we knew we had a great chance of grabbing all 3 points, no matter who we were playing.

The super 7's started off really well. Lots of possession and created a few half chances. Then a big chance came to HINDI whose tame shot was easily cleared by the AP defense. The return of PAUL AYERS was a fine sight to see and he nearly opened the scoring after rounding two players before trying to smash one into the top corner of the near post from a very tight angle, when a pass to CHARLES would probably have been better option =). As we pushed for the opening goal we left ourselves open to the odd counter attack, but our back four and stand in, temporary, permanent keeper MARTIN BRADLEY snuffed out any danger and limited AP to the odd wild shot.

Half time 0‐0. Half time talk consisted of us just to carry on what we were doing. So we came out looking for this illusive first goal. With the chances we were creating, we could be forgiven for thinking that it may never come.

First change of the game saw STACEY come on for the hard working MACKEY and AYERS dropping into midfield. STACEY instantly made an impact and nearly scored after chasing down a lofted ball into the area. STACEY beat the excellent on rushing AP keeper to the ball, as they collided, but ball just went wide as the keeper was left rolling on the floor in agony.

Finally with 20 minutes remaining the goal came. CHARLES took the ball down on his chest, played the ball over his head to the on running BRIAN GRIFFIN, who used every bit of his lack of pace to beat the defender and drill one into bottom corner. After that there was only going to be one winner. The second goal came shortly, after some neat play down the vamps left, a cross came in and after a goal mouth scramble, the ball fell to CHARLES to grab his 2nd goal of the season. It was a tough game, but ultimately the class of the 7's came through to take the victory. Have to admit it was a pleasure to play with all my mates again and no arguing what so ever or even putting players down. Brilliant in every way. Same again next week.

What do you do when you're not at the Vamps? Work my arse off, argue with other captains regarding players, panic about players, then next thing it is

Why did you join the Vamps? Sort of by chance, because a friend of mine asked me to join, but I stayed because it is a friendly and unpretentious club that has helped me grow as a player and as a person.

Who is the best player in your team? We have a great squad full of young and technically gifted players, but I am all about the team players, and those who are willing to give 100% in every position they are asked to played in are the best players for me

Who is the worst player in your team? I honestly can’t think of anyone. Maybe mirror?

What is your aim as an individual, football-wise? Try to improve my all around game, to be calmer on the pitch. Think faster on my feet, literally

What is your goal for your Vamps XI this season? To play, as a football team is meant to play. Lots of passing, lots of support and trust in each other. The results will follow

Why do you play the position you do? I am a good passer, and can dribble the ball well. I also run around a a lot and love a good challenge I think that qualifies me to play CM don you?

Why aren't you on the committee? There are many more members senior to me who are already on the committee, but to be completely honest I have not given it much thought. I feel like right now I should concentrate on doing the best I can do for the 6s.

What do you think is the best thing about the Vamps? I mentioned it before, it is real and unpretentious.

What do you think is the worst thing about the Vamps? We are a still in a transitional period, but I think we can do much more in attracting new players.

Best moment playing for the Vamps. There are many, but one of them that sticks out is when we went through to semi finals in Novet Junior cup last year in penalties. After missing the first two penalties we thought we lost the game. Lee had a hattrick of penalty saves and Med put us through in the sudden death stage.

Are you going to Belgium? Sadly no, my job commitment doesn't allow me too many holidays.

Around 5 years ago one October evening, I came down to the vamps, handed Greg £40 or £50 quid and he said son, you're playing for 6s and your captain is Graham Surrey. Then there was like a month of Cancellation due to water-logged pitches!
