THE WEEKLY M1881mELEastin & Bienvenu, Publishers. JUSTICE TO ALL. ir.oo Per Year, Invariably in Advance.Official Journal. ST . MARTINVILLE, LA . OCTOBER Ith. 1887. VOL. IL. No. 34.

Rev. Father A. B. Langlois. The Rev. Father whose name beadthis article, rector of Pointe-a-la-Bache

for over thirty years, who bae beenappointed rector of this parish arrivedhere Tuesday morning. The same day of his arrival a delega-

tion of our colored people, headed byone of their brass bands, under tile di-rection of Mr . J. C. Vavasseur, pro'eededto the presbytary, discoursed several oftheir sweet selections, after which Mr. .1.C. Vavasseur presented in the name ofthe colored Catholics a magnificentbouqauet of rare and sweet scented flow-ers. to the Rev. Father. The Rev. Father who appreciated thisdemonstration received these people andtreated them liberally. At about 8 o'clock in the evening alarge number of ladies and gentlemenand the Excelsior Brass Band repairedto the presbytary s'renalded our newpriest and greeted him a hearty and hap-py welcome amongst us.The Rev.Father in a few worhs expressed his appreciation of such a demnon-

stration on the part of his parishionersin his new field of labor.Father l.anglois comes to us highlyrecommended, is a man of enterlriseand energy, and with the good will ofthe people, we will soon have opportu-nities to appreciate and cherish our ve-nerable Father.

The Sugar Tariff. The sugar tariff question Is again beingagitated. The sugar planters of Loul-

siana may well expect a bitter and in-cessent war against the protection of su-gar, by the free traders. We believe in view of the attackswhich will he made at the coming Con-gress upon the sugar tariff, it would bewise and proper that the sugar produ-cers of every parish be organized in "Su-gar Planters Association" and addressmenmorials to the next Congress, pro-testing against any attempt made to re-duce the sugar tariff. We may expect our Representa-tives and Senators to do all in their pow-er to protect the sugar industry of Loui-slass, but they need our help anad espe-cially, a solid protest in the shape ofmemorials by all the sugar districts.

Planters, our sugar industry is threat-ened, and unless we organize to face ourenemies, defeat shall be our fate.

Our Weak Candidate.Ourcontemporary of the Reveille saystheMessenger is riding a weak horse-

referring to the candidacy of Gen. Ni-cholls-'because we do not howl andtalk a great deal for our choice. Thereason Is very simple, brother Reveille, when we thought there would be a con-test between McEnery and Nicholls wedid talk for our candidate, but now wehave such an easy task, that we pause tolook how hard our poor friends a.r wvor-king, in vain, in this parish, and else-where, but defeat and discomfiture isaverywhbere. Their only salvation' is in

a high banded outrage as that of theSixth District Convention, but we are upto the time and will crush any such frau-dulent and bold attempt of discardingthe people's will and interest, for thebenitlt of a political gang composed of afew otiee seekers who audaciously clanmto be the representativre of the people aswas the case with the delegation of Avoy.ellea and St. Landry. The MeEnery people of this parishare honest, and won't steal, therefore, they are gone

Wretched Indeed. Are those whom a confirmed tendencyto biliousness, subject to the variousdnd changeful symptoms indicative ofliver comp!aint. Nausea, sick headache.furred tongue, a dull or sharp painlin the neighborhood of to'e affected organ, impurity of the blood and low of appetite, signalize it as one of the most distressing

as it is one of the ,mnstommon, of mal-adies. There is, however, a benign speci-fic for the disease and all its unpleasantmanifestation. It is the concurrent testi-mony of the public and the medical profession, that llostetter's Stomach Bitters isa medicine which achieves results speed-ily f.lt thorough and benign. Besides recetifying liver desurder, it invigorates thefeel,e. rconquers kidney complaints andlhastens the convalescence of those recov-ering from enfeebling diseases. More-over, It is the grand spclfi for feverand ague.

For the information of the ThibodauxSentinel, we will say that Mr. Pierre D.Olivier was not appointed Tax Collecterof this parish by Gov. Nicbolls becausehis first appointee, Felix Olivier couldnot procure his quietus or certificate, butto fill the vacancy caused by the death ofhis brother. Mr. Felix Olivier, who, hadse'tled with the State and Pariabsh, forevery cent collected by him, and wemust here say. that they were both elcient and honest ofcers. The brainless friends of Governor M e-Enery are making capital the famousManoing letter in their campaign. In our opinion it is nothing tothe cre-dit of Gov. Melnery, for if he loved thecreoles, and was their friend as his sup-porters seem disposed to make the peoplebelieve, he should have published theletter at the time it was wri ten and letthie people treat the man as hedeservel; bu t no, at that time, Mr.MeEnery shared the ideas and opinions

of Mr. Manning towards the c eoles, an dthe intelligent an d learned gentlemanknew the weak side of Mr. Memery, hence the letter.SK0O in caish! 3 Worcester's an d 3Webster's Dictiotnaries, worth $89. and 4Dictionary llolders, worth $15.0, givenas prsea for Lest essays answering thequestion "Why should I use a Dictionary
