It is that time of year again, with Christmas only matter of a few weeks ago now.Have we even started to consider what we are going to buy each other from Christmas yet?The answer is probably, give us a break we have a couple of weeks up our sleeves as yet before we decide who and what is being given this year. With our going away for a couple of weeks across the US of A by train, I have not given Christmas a moments thought so far.I will probably buy something for Lis on the flight out to New Yorkthat will keep her happy for yetanother year. The question is:“Is this totally unromantic?” Yes, is the short answer.Having run a local paper business for now over 10 years I continue to be surprised by how many IT problems we continue to be faced with, which need sorting out ASAP.I would like to thank Gary from Norfolk Computers, (see his advert on left) as well as Paul Damen and Nigel Holmes for their advice & help in sorting out our recent problems.I read with interest the letter concerning M & Co in the Cromer High Street.

It does seem a shame that H & K are closing as it was always very busy and popular with everyone who went in to get their cards & envelopes or any of the numerous other things they sold. It does seem completely wrong to have a busy & popular shop closing down. Can I ask readers to send in any items / events for publication before January 17th by no later than 11th DecemberPLEASE. “Enjoy Your Crab Tales”

Dear Philip, I am sad and angry to hear that a local store, in Cromer’s High Steet, will be closing at Christmas and that the national chain shop, M & Co are taking over as they want larger premises. This shop is already there in the High street but wants to spill over into the very popular H and K premises. It’s good to have M & Co but do we really want a much larger shop, especially at the expense of H and K? The result of which is this busy and extremely popular little store will close as it cannot find other premises. It’s a real shame.Maureen Edwards

Dear Philip,We have a caravan in East Runton, I now read and enjoy Crab tales on line. Re the libraries: when at the caravan, I use the local libraries for internet etc. It would be very bad if the libraries shut, for older people ,students, young children, who use them for all kinds of things, and all those without the Internet.

Here in Peterborough they have reduced the hours in the libraries, still preferable to a complete shut down. I hope people do comment on their website www.your voicenorfolk.co.ukBrenda WestonPeterborough

Dear Editor“Reaching Out” ~ “Bereavement Support”This is just to say “thank you” to those of you who have rung the help line or spoken personally, to discuss a needy person within our villages. We have been able to visit folk in hospital or on their return home, to welcome those moving in our villages, to visit the house-bound, to organise a lift to Church, to sit with a dear soul nearing the end of life and to offer a loved one a short break from the house. We are working closely with the BEREAVEMENT team as often our work overlaps. It is good that the REACHING OUT team includes clergy, readers and lay folk.

Members of Breckland Land Rover Club drove to Sheringham Lifeboat Station on Saturday 16th November to present a cheque to the charities of Sheringham RNLI and Nelson’s Journey. Six Landrovers were driven by club members from Norwich to the beach at Sheringham to make a presentation of £3,410 split evenly between thetwo charities. Sheringham Lifeboat Operations’ Manager Brian Farrow & Marion Bird from Nelson’s Journey each accepted cheques in the sums of £1,705 from Mr Kevin Peake Chairman of the Breckland Landrover Club.

Mr Peake said the money was the total sum club members had raised throughout this last year and they were proud to hand it over to these two deserving charities.Marion Bird said:“Nelsons Journey is a charity which gives help & support to the bereaved children of Norfolk. It provides counselling and therapeutic fun camps where they quickly make friends and create their own support groups. They learn strategies to cope with all the confused feelings following bereavement and to think and talk about their special person, leading to a brighter and happier future, fulfilling our slogan of ‘Bringing Back Smiles’. She was delighted to accept the cheque from the club and said it would make a real difference to children’s lives.

Brian Farrow said:“This very generous donation from club members will go towards the principle for which the RNLI was founded in 1824 by Sir William Hillary the Saving of Life at Sea’. Sheringham Lifeboat Station is run entirely by volunteers from the local area, who are committed to saving lives at sea. Our funds are raised through the generosity of our supporters and the RNLI Shops in Sheringham High Street and at the Lifeboat Station itself.”The Sheringham Lifeboat Station, which has been in existence since 1838, has been on numerous ‘shouts’ this year and continues to provide a reassuring presence for those who use the sea around Sheringham for work or leisure.Pictured above: Sheringham Lifeboat crew with members of the Breckland Land Rover Club and Marion Bird from Nelsons Journey. The cheque is being held by Senior Helmsman David Hagan (left) Kevin Peake (centre) Marion Bird (right)

This gives scope for the right person to be chosen for each individual situation.

Please do not hesitate to call us on:079 606 17172 whenever you feel there is good need.It may be that the problem will resolve itself, but it is good if we can be vigilant and seek to be good neighbours. People are often happy to know we have thought of them even if a visit proves to be unnecessary. If you know of new folk moving into our villages, please contact the Reaching Out team. Betty Taylor

A Farmer Goes... .......out to his field one morning only to find all of his cows frozen solid, they are like statues. It had been a bitterly cold night, but he’d neverthought this would happen and the realisation of the situation then dawned on him. With his entire livestock gone, how would he make ends meet? How would he feed his wife and kids? How would he pay the mortgage? He sat with his head in his hands, trying to come to terms with his impending poverty.Just then, an elderly woman walked by, “What’s the matter?” she asked. The farmer gestured toward the frozen cows and explained his predicament to the woman.Without hesitation the old woman smiled and began to rub one of the cows noses and after a few seconds the cow was soon back to normal and chewing the cud. One by one, the old woman defrosted the cows until the whole field was full of healthy animals. The farmer was delighted and what the woman wanted as a repayment for her deed but shedeclined his offer and went on her way.A passer-by who had seen it all approachedthe farmer and said:“You know who that was don’t you?” “No” said the farmer “who?”

“That was Thora Hird.”

YOUR NEXT CRAB TALES COMES OUT on December

Yours For £215,000

The fastest, most powerful Rolls-Royce ever built and the Rolls-Royce Wraith will set you back a cool £215,000“I’ve driven expensive vehicles over the years” said Richard Yarrow in Metro, but the Rolls-Royce Wraith really does “set a new benchmark”. A 2-door, 4-seat coupe with a Bentley-esque “fastback” body and costs an eye-watering £215,000. And if you want all the optional extras, from wood panelling to a “starry” night ceiling, you will have to fork out another £60,000 - enough to buy a new Jaguar F-Type, or a Porsche Cayenne. The Wraith represents a “bold new direction” for Rolls-Royce, said Paul Bond in Auto Express. It’s the fastest, most powerful car the marque has ever built: the twin-turbo 6.6-litre V12 engine has 624bhp, and will do 0-60mph in just 4.4 seconds. “Thankfully, none of the Rolls-Royce serene character has been lost. The Wraith is whisper-quiet when cruising, a distant rumble as you get faster, then a full-blown roar if you keep your foot deep down into the thick lambswool carpet”.“So much speed in such a stately body is perplexing,” wrote Martin Love in The Observer, “like a granny hoiking up

her skirts and giving Usain Bolt a run for his money.” But speed isn’t the Wraith’s only trump card - “technologically, it’s a masterpiece”. Not only does it have all the usual bells & whistles- wireless hotspot, touchpad multimedia - it also uses GPS to scan the road ahead and engage the right gear accordingly. “It’s like a butler leaning over to whisper: ‘Sir, I’ve selected 7th for the corner ahead.’The Wraith, in short, is an “unignorable” car - albeit one that almost none of us will ever have the pleasure of driving. So can you afford such a car parked outside your 3 up and 3 down house in Cromer? The answer must be surely “No way old man, well past anything I can fork outfor today or tommorrow.”So how much is your house worth and will it leave you enough to shell out for a motorcar like this?A comfortable house in Norfolk with 3 or 4 bedrooms & somewhere to park just 1 or 2 cars will set you back over £200,000. So if you don’t have a morgage to sort out, you too could be cruising down to London or wherever in this wonderful car once you have paid out for silly things like insurance.

Yes, I am sure it really this a wonderful bit of engineering, but what kind of person can afford to buy it outright? The answer must surely only be A Very Rich One.This Article was taken from ‘The Week’ in early November 2013 PK

Seeking Your ViewsOn Saturday November 16th, I went along with many others to the Pilgrims Shelter to look at the comments on the proposed Trimingham Village Hall building, all displayed on the walls.

Thanks to Liz King & Terry Brown (Above)there was much to see and take note of as three possiblities were on display with comments written below. The first two possiblities were on display with plans printed out and the basic costs. The first and second options would be new buildings located on their existing site just before Woodlands on the left going towards Cromer. The first it seems is very large and of course the most expensive and considering the size of the village size seemed rather too costly, while the 2nd option seems to answer all the needs of space for local organisations, that already use the existing building. So why the move is the question you may well ask?In not too many years the beautiful existing Pilgrim shelter is too close to the North Sea for comfort and too small for the usage it is currently already getting. The finally option is to develop the existing Church, which as time has gone by is being used less and less, but without any parking I do not believe that this is an option.Whatever will happen things really need to get rolling forward before the funding options are not on the table anymore. While these options are being considered Liz King is already looking at holding a Trimingham Carnival to raise more funds towards the new building in the coming year. So it really is a case of watch this space. PK

Hl Foods Site DevelopmentAn application to redevelop the former HL Foods site & adjacent land in Nth Walsham has been approved by the NNDC.The site has been a long standing eyesore since closure of the factory and the new development will lead to the construction of 176 family homes, the provision of public open spaces & land for employment development. Commitment has also been given to providing a 50 space car park for Nth Walsham railway station and road connections to allow development of further homes. The brownfield site will be put back into use and represents a vote of confidence in North Walsham. It will also provide much needed footfall for the town centre and support the

North Walsham economy. It will secure the £2.3m investment loan from the Greater Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership making future site development possible.NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said: “I’m delighted by this decision which represents another major investment in the town. When faced with a site that has stood derelict for many years and looked set to remain so for many more to come, I am pleased that the committee supported the positive move to invest in the town. For too long Nth Walsham has been blighted by a lack of action and we are determined to deliver change for a better future.”

for Planning, Benjie Cabbell Manners, said: “We’re very fortunate in North Norfolk to work with builders and architects who are

...in the spotlight at national awards.Three North Norfolk developments have won their way through to the finals of the national Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence Awards for 2013.Projects from Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire competed to be named the best in East Anglia, in 12 categories covering different types of building design, construction and use. The awards recognise projects that have been built to the very highest standards, and demonstrate innovation and sustainability in design. The projects nominated by North Norfolk District Council to feature in the national finals are: • Best Small Commercial Building – The Atrium, North Walsham, (Top Right)which will be competing against buildings such as Denbigh Castle Visitor Centre

• Best Technical Innovation (Above)Cromer and District Hospital, which will be up amongst the highest quality buildings.

The Coasthopper Bus ServiceNorth Norfolk District Council has called for Norfolk County Council to guarantee that there will be no reduction in the Coasthopper bus service that links isolated towns across the district throughout the year.In a motion approved at a meeting of the NNDC Full Council on the 26th November councillors agreed to urge the County Council not to cut the service, and that if there were any proposals for changes to the service there should be full consultations with residents & stakeholders in Nth Norfolk before any changes could be implemented. The Coasthopper bus service, currently run by Norfolk Green, carried 545,523 passengers in 2012, with an estimated increase to over 570,000 this year. Norfolk Green has said that any cuts in County Council funding over the next two years would force them to reduce the level of service, most especially in the winter.Tom FitzPatrick, NNDC Leader, said: “The Coasthopper bus service plays a crucial role in the district, providing essential links between our coastal & neighbouring inland communities. It is a vital component of the N. Norfolk economy, making it possible for people to travel outside their towns and villages throughout the year. Any cuts will potentially lead to further rural isolation for many people across the district and threaten to make life more difficult for our tourism and business communities.”

There were some very exciting matches with particularly good wins for Jack Evans, Wesley Nicholson & Callum Fruish. Jack managed to checkmate his opponent with only a second to spare on his clock. However, Wymondham eventually won the match 7.5 to 4.5.

On the 25th October, Fred Corbett a local Cabinet maker from West Runton flew to Katmandu in Nepal to start his 18 day trek to Everest Base Camp to raise money for The Ellen Mezzetti Memorial Fund set up at Epilepsy Research UK.He then flew to Lukla high in the Himalayas, to the 3rd most dangerous airport in the world to start his trek. There were Twenty people in his party plus a doctor, guides, sherpas and yaks, they trekked through pine forests, over deep gorges and on long suspension bridges, climbing slowly higher into the more bleak mountainous regions.

Fred says: We stayed in Tea houses and buddist temples along the way.We were very lucky with the weather, most day’s it was sunny, but cold with beautiful blue skies. It took us 9 days to walk to Everest Base Camp, over steep stone paths and withheadaches, nausea, tired-ness and lack of sleep, which is common at high altitudes, it was tough going. Out of our party 18 made it to Everest Base Camp, One lady and her friend had to be airlifted out

Everest Base Camp Adventure

to Katmandu Hospital because of their serious altitude sickness. This was a truly rewarding and amazing trip through stunning scenery, and the Nepalese people were wonderfully friendly and very welcoming.Having funded the whole trip myself we hoped initially to raise £1000.00 but at present we have raised over £2500.00 for Ellen’s fund at Epilepsy Reseach UK. A Huge thanks to everyone who helped with the invaluable training, and a Massive Thank You to everyone who generously sponsored and donated money. My wife and I have been overwhelmed with people’s generosity, it has been truly amazing, and money is still coming in.

If you wish to donate the website www.virginmoneygiving.com/fredcorbett is open until 11th December.

Overstrand & Cromer Community First RespondersHello, my name is Ronnie the Responder. I am writing this article in order to clarify the question that I and my colleagues have recently been asked, which is: Is the community Public Access Defibrillator (cPAD) scheme & Community First Responder (CFR) scheme the same? The cPAD scheme is an independent scheme that allows communities to fund raise in order to establish an Automated External Defibrillator in a high visibility cabinet attached to the external wall of a building. They can also be placed within public buildings such as sporting venues, shopping complexes and doctor surgeries, in fact in any location where people are likely to congregate and is for use by the public. The defibrillator is accessed by a code given by the ambulance service dispatcher when you dial 999, (In all cases dial 999 first as it is really important that the professionals are on their way). Your local ambulance service will notify you if there is a cPAD box near to you and if it is easily accessible and give you the access code to the box. If you are willing they will ask you to get this and commence the relevant actions. No training is required to use the defibrillator as once it is activated, it will give you verbal instructions. However, awareness or training sessions in basic CPR and use of AEDs are useful and can help with confidence in using a defibrillator.A Community First Responder is a volunteer who is trained by the ambulance service to

attend emergency calls in the area where they live or work. Our aim is to reach a potential life threatening emergency in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives on the scene. We are sent by ambulance control to life-threatening emergencies such as cardiac arrest, heart attack chest pains, severe asthma attack, diabetic Hypoglycaemic attack, epilepsy and anaphylactic shock. We live or work in area where a group is setup and can get to an incident in a few minutes while an ambulance is on its way and our role is to help stabilise the patient and, in doing so, keep the patient alive until the arrival of the ambulance crew, who will undertake further life saving techniques. An ambulance will always be mobilised to every call that the First Responder attends. Once the Ambulance arrives on scene, the Community First Responder will hand over to the crew and may be asked to assist. After the case is complete and the patient is on their way to the hospital, the Responder will phone Ambulance control to notify them that they are clear of the incident. First Responders utilise their own vehicle, pay their own insurance, road fund licence, MOT & fuel. They also provide their own protective clothing. We carry our own AED & Oxygen along with a variety of therapy masks, airways bandages and dressing. The only medication that we carry and authorised to administer is Dextragel for use when someone has very low blood/sugar levels.

CancelledSadly, Mundesley Cinema have decided to cancel the showing of the film Untouchable in January 2014 due to concerns that their audience will be put off by sub-titles.Some months ago I borrowed the DVD of this delightful film from a friend and have since bought it to give to friends & family who have all enjoyed it.This is certainly one of the best films that I have ever seen and I was looking forward to seeing it on the big screen.

Based on a true story, Untouchable is the mostsuccessful French film ever - 60% of everyone in France went to see it in late 2010-11. The story is about a rich, white Parisian man, who, after having an accident which leaves him a quadriplegic, hires a black guy from the ghetto to look after him. The film then follows the development of their unlikely relationship. Roger Ebert writes:“The success of Untouchable grows directly from its casting and Francois Cluzet, who acts only with his face and voice, is able to communicate great feeling. Omar Sy is enormously friendly and upbeat. The appeal of a film like this, is that when we begin to feel affection for the characters, what makes them happy make us happy. Caught up in the flow of events, we allow many assumptions to pass unchallenged. The writer-directors, Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, are cheerfully willing to go for broad gags and their style is ingratiating. But at the end, by looking through the fore-ground details, what we’re being given is a simplistic reduction of racial stereotypes.” If you would like to see this film on DVD it is available at the Library and you can order it if it is already out.If you want to buy it as a Christmas present or for yourself it is available from Amazon.Otherwise persuade your local Film club to show it and tell everyone that this is a film NOT to be missed. LK.

Nth Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery is presenting a debut exhibition featuring a collection of observational and creative works by young local artist Charlotte Rowlands. Self-taught 24 year old North Norfolk Artist Charlotte, from Roughton, has achieved an inspiring portfolio of mixed media from original portraits and wildlife to stained glass 3D work. She has been encouraged and creatively nurtured by her artist mother Karen Rowlands, who formally exhibited at NNDC last year.“I love the challenge in drawing portraits of observing and captur-ing the subtle details that make each individual person unique. The simplicity of colour and rawness of pencil I feel brings an honesty to the portraits. When drawing animals I like to use pastel and charcoal to achieve the quality of light, fluffiness in the fur. Making stained glass presents a very different challenge to drawing. An image needs to be captured in a few simple lines, then developed by the choice of colours & textures of glass.”

The exhibition features original and great value seasonal gifts ranging from £8 to £180, with the offer of commissions for drawings and stained glass.

North Norfolk District Council seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit 1st-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually; open for view to the public during normal office hours.Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 8.30am – 5pm.Wednesday 10am – 5pm. Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm.
