Message from the President 11 years have passed since this university’s
incorporation and renaming as National University
Corporation, Hamamatsu University School of
Medicine but our original vision and goals remain
unchanged. They are: (1) to educate our students to
be exce l l en t c l i n i c i ans and h igh ly c rea t ive
researchers; (2) to practice medicine on a patient‒first
basis ; and (3) to play a key role in developing
community health care.
Since its inception, we have graduated 3,565
medical students and 1,164 nursing students from our
university to meet the medical needs of Shizuoka
prefecture and beyond our boarders. However, from
2010, we will admit 120 new medical students a year
because of a national plan to meet the increasing
need for medical doctors all over Japan. In addition,
more than 1,235 students, including 517 doctors
evaluated only on theses, have been awarded medical
doctorate degrees as well as more than 198 nurses
awarded a Master’s degree in nursing.
Six years ago, the new wards for inpatients were
completed and became operational. The renewal of
our outpatients facilities has been also completed
recently. The hospital now has 613 beds and 35
clinical services units to fulfill our aim to provide
medical services which have strong points not only in
Hamamatsu city and Shizuoka prefecture but also in
Japan.
Finally, we have launched two research centers in
2011. One is the Medical Photonics Research Center
and the other is the Collaboration Center for Medical
Innovation. The former, established by the integration
of two previous centers, Photon Medical Research
Center and Molecular Imaging Frontier Research
Center, was intended at further advancing the studies
on medical application of light. The latter was newly
set up to prompt collaborative research between our
university and the industries. Continuous cooperation
by various companies such as Hamamatsu Photonics
K.K. (since 1991) has been quite valuable to start and
maintain these centers.
Under my leadership, this university’s overall goal
i n a l l t he se endeavor s i s t o s t r eng then our
contributing to the improvement of human health and
well-being and to expand our efforts in the fields of
education, clinical practice and research. I look
forward to meeting these goals in the years ahead.
University Emblem & Logo
Mt. Fuji, located in Shizuoka and the symbol of Japan, is the motif of the University emblem. Kanji characters for ‘Medicine’ and ‘University’ are incorporated into the Mt. Fuji. The bight in its lower part portrays the Sea of Enshu and waves, and its protrusion images Hamana Lake. The University emblem is used on diplomas, legal documents, and other materials only at the discretion of the president.
University Emblem
The University’s initial letter “h” is designed into a mountain-like aqua shape, inspired by Mt. Fuji. It also symbolizes Hamana Lake, the Sea of Enshu, natural water and the essence of life. Together with an orange circle, it implies a mankind with energy, health and dynamism. The University logo encaptures the University’s dedication to the future development of human health and welfare. The logo was created primarily for use on merchandise and promotional items, and is an alternative to the university Emblem for graphic design purposes.
University Logo
The university seeks to achieve three chief objectives; firstly, to grow up excellent
clinicians and highly creative researchers; secondly, to promote original research and the
innovation of medical techniques; and thirdly, to play a leading role in local medical
treatments by practicing medicine for the greatest benefits of patients. These goals should
contribute to the health and welfare of all mankind.
Philosophy and Objectives of our
University at its Establishment
The main task of Hamamatsu University School of Medicine is to actively promote the
mankind's health, happiness and prosperity through its educational and academic activities.
The school, which serves as an educational and research institution for medicine and
nursing, aims at teaching and researches on the newest theories and practical applications
of them. The school continuously seeks to grow up expert clinicians and nurses and their
researchers who are not only highly academic and skilled but also well trained and versed
in medical ethics. By doing so, the university plays a leading role in local medicine and
health care and helps them develop.
