Music Enlightenment for Children at EXCEL is a specially designed programme that gears towards the developmental needs of young children in Hong Kong. Music is infused and integrated with other crucial child developmental domains throughout our programme curriculum. Musical experience is an exciting stimulus for holistic development because it is creative and “hands-on.”

The three age level core courses carefully utilize developmentally appropriate music resources to foster stimulated learning experience that nurtures the social-emotional, physical-motor, cognitive-intellectual and aesthetic-creativity development of children in their specific stage.

Music Enlightenment for Children recognizes that all children are musical. All children can learn to sing in tune, move rhythmically, perform and enjoy music with confidence, provided that their early environment supports such learning.

Music Enlightenment for Children recognizes that all children are unique and different in their own special way. Hence no single miracle teaching approach would suffice the needs of all children.

We adopted an eclectic approach to utilize most developmentally appropriate strategies to cater for the needs of children at their specific age and stage of maturity. We incorporate and integrate ideas and techniques from different contemporary western music education approaches in our music programs, including: Orff Schulwerk, the Kodály Approach, and Dalcroze Eurhythmics, and Edwin E. Gordon’s Music Learning Theory.

• Singing• Speech• Movement• Dance• Improvisation• Playing instruments

Zoltán Kodály (1882–1967)Hungarian Composer

• Hand signs• A capella• Part singing• Read music

The Orff Schulwerk ApproachOrff Schulwerk (schulwerk is German for “schoolwork”) is a child-centered approach to music learning. Developed by German composer Carl Orff (1895–1982), it emphasizes on experiencing music through movement, singing, playing instruments, and improvisation. The most outstanding feature of the Orff approach is transferring body rhythms to nonpitched percussion instruments and later to a family of pitched mallet instruments: xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels. Improvisation on instruments is a vital part of the Schulwerk experience.

The Kodály ApproachComposer and musicologist Zoltán Kodály (1882–1967) developed his approach to music learning based on Hungarian folk music. His ultimate aim is to cultivate a generation of citizens with fluent music literacy through a sequential programme. The most outstanding feature of the Kodály approach is the use of hand signs, originally developed by John Curwen and Sarah Glover in England, and abundant a capella (singing without instrumental accompaniment) and part singing opportunities. Children who are taught according to the Kodály principles will read music fluently and be able to transfer their music reading from voice to instruments.

Dalcroze EurhythmicsEmile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865–1950) was a Swiss musician and educator who pioneered music and movement education. The Dalcroze approach incorporates ear training, singing with sol-fa syllables, improvisation, and eurhythmics. The most outstanding feature of the Dalcroze approach is early cultivation of free body movement in response to music. In eurhythmics experiences, children use their bodies as musical instruments; they show their musical understanding through musical and aesthetical movement.

Gordon Music Learning TheoryAs one of the most current approaches, Edwin E. Gordon’s Music Learning Theory is based upon a systematic study of how we learn music. Gordon’s theory of audiation (inner hearing) is central to his learning approach. To audiate is to “hear” and to comprehend music for which the sound may (or may not) be present. Audiation is to music what thought is to language. Hence, Gordon’s theory aims to train children to audiate. Through discrimination learning (learning by rote), then to inference learning (being able to think for oneself or to perform tasks that have not been learned by rote), students will develop musical skills sequentially and logically.

The courses are conducted in small groups of around 10 students to ensure ample attention is given to individual students. The last lesson of the course will be a performance presentation, where students can perform and learn from each other. Parents and friends are welcome to join this seesion and share each student’s achievements.

*Students who have completed the Saffron level and attended at least 75% of the course will be awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Following on the success of our Summer Drama Camps for Kids and Teens and the enthusiasm of students, we continue to offer our children drama programme this fall. A one-week drama intensive course is probably one of the most exciting things children can do during school holidays. In the course of just one week, children will work with our professional tutors to adapt, rehearse and perform a mini version of a well-known play.

This course is suitable for both chatterboxes who are super expressive and born to be performers, but also suitable for shy students who seek to acquire the confidence of expressing themselves and interacting with other children.

Children will discover a new and exciting world of performing arts. This is perfect for parents who are looking for a fun, enjoyable and educational course for their children during school holidays.

The last lesson of the course will be a presentation performance, where children can perform to an audience. Families and friends are welcome to join this session and share in their achievements.

Following on the success of our Summer Drama Camps for Kids and Teens and the enthusiasm of students, we continue to offer our children drama programme this fall. Whether a child or a teenager is a chatter box and is destined to be a performer, or a little bit shy and scared of expressing themselves, drama has the ability to bring out the best in them.

10 reasons why children and teenagers should do drama:

1. Increase their self-esteem and confidence.2. Develop creativity and imagination.3. Learn to speak in a more articulate manner.4. Connect effectively with peers and audiences.5. Learn to express their own ideas in respect to others’ viewpoints.6. Overcome insecurities.7. Learn how to be themselves in front of others, and at the same time how to reflect

on themselves.8. Learn how to give and receive constructive feedback.9. Appreciate diverse cultures, traditions and histories.10. Make heaps of friends!

Every term, we will focus on a different style/theme of drama: comedy, tragedy, melodrama, farce, Shakespeare etc.

Every week, tutors will integrate different drama skills and activities related to the theme of that term.

In the last lesson, students will put on a short presentation, showcasing what they have learnt during the term.

Theatre-based Public Speaking Coaching Course(Conducted in English) Instructor : Howard PALEY

The ability to present your thoughts and ideas in succinct, engaging language and to hold the undivided attention of an audience is a good skill set to have… at any time!

This course is your first step toward becoming a sincere and engaging speaker with ‘presence’. There are no short cuts – it takes practice and discipline. We will focus on your strengths and develop a platform on which to build your speaking skills.

In this course you will learn by doing. We will use theatre based material and techniques to expand your public speaking ability. The course is conducted in small group of around 10 students to ensure ample attention is given to individual students.

This is how it will work:

Phase One: Use theatric monologues to:•Take you out of your comfort zone•Familiarize yourself with being uncomfortable•Cope with stage fright and turn it into positive energy•And in so doing, increase the scope of your comfort zone

Concurrently, we will work on:•Connecting with an audience•Having a conversation instead of giving a lecture•Awareness of natural nonverbal characteristics (vocal patterns, hand gestures, facial expressions, eye contact and other body language) •When to move and when to be still

Phase Two: Practice and present 3 minutes speeches* to the class.

*Materials will be provided by the Tutor

A traditional folk-art in China, paper cuttings have special significance at festivals and important ceremonies. They are chiefly used for religious purposes or decoration, with animals, flowers and patterns representing happiness and prosperity as the common designs. Especially popular in the countryside, the bright red or multi-coloured paper cuts provide a strong foil to set off a merry atmosphere.

Learning the art of paper cutting requires not only a pair of nimble hands, but also patience and concentration in order to cut out the delicate designs from small pieces of paper. In the course, participants will learn the basic techniques of cutting various classical patterns and figures. They will also be encouraged to exercise their imaginations and create their own paper cut designs through the chattering of a pair of scissors.

This course will introduce the developmental history, style and works of paper cutting, and the pictorial explanation of the various patterns. Students will also learn fundamental paper cutting techniques. Most paper cutting patterns are designed according to the four seasonal changes and their related images. Festival imageries may also be included in the design. A pair of special scissors will be provided in the first lesson, which MUST be returned to EXCEL upon completion of the course. HK$100 will be collected as deposit fee in the first lesson. Failure to return the scissors will be subject to a penalty of HK$100.

* Paper cutting patterns may vary depending on the progress of the class.
