Repaso e integración de los puntos anteriores utilizando oraciones más extensas, pero sin usar conector: Yesterday was a busy day: Peter was cleaning and Mary was cooking. I was studying.

TELL ME WHAT YOU WERE DOING YESTERDAY 3.1. Estaba estudiando anoche. What were you doing yesterday at 8:00? I was watching TV, I wasn’t reading a book.

Examples: to come - coming to write - writing to use - using to share - sharing Excepciones: to be - being to see - seeing 2. Examples: to put putting to swim swimming to run running

COBAEM 4

INGLÉS II

Examples. to play playing to allow allowing to box boxing to cry crying

to begin to address to run to walk to apply to change to call to destroy to dry to help To put to play to enjoy to know to be Como está descrito; entre los tiempos gramaticales que incluye el uso del gerundio es el tiempo pasado progresivo, que se describe a continuación.

Examples: 1. What were you doing yesterday when I got home ?. I was reading. 2. I was listening some records when John got home.

COBAEM 6

SUJETO TO BE (en pasado) FORMA SIMPLE DEL VERBO + ING

I was working We They You

were

working

He She was working It

FORMA INTERROGATIVA Para establecer el modo interrogativo en este tiempo gramatical, se invierte el verbo auxiliar (to be en pasado) y el sujeto, como se muestra en los siguientes ejemplos de la tabla: TO BE (EN PASADO) SUJETO FORMA SIMPLE DEL

VERBO + ING + ?

Was I working? Were

we they you

working?

He Was She working? It

COBAEM 7

INGLÉS II

FORMA NEGATIVA Para establecer la forma negativa se agrega not al verbo auxiliar “to be”.

SUJETO TO BE ( en pasado) + NOT FORMA SIMPLE DEL VERBO + ING

I was not working We They You

were not

working

He She was not working It

Examples: I was not working I wasn’t working

3.2. Mi hermana estaba viendo la televisión. Pasado progresivo usando las demás personas gramaticales, es decir: we, they, you, he, she and it .

1. Events which are simulaneous. I was working while she was sleeping. 2. Events which are interrupted. I was crossing the street when I saw you. 3. Events which have duration He was walking all this morning. 4. Events which are complete. They worked all morning.

Two children were playing on the sand and your parents saw them pleased. 3.3. ¿Qué estaban haciendo ayer? Repaso e integración de los puntos anteriores utilizando oraciones más extensas, pero sin usar conector: Yesterday was a busy day: Peter was cleaning and Mary was cooking. I was studying. We often use the past simple and the past continuous together today that something happened in the middle of something else, see the following examples:

1. Tom burnt his hand when he was cooking the dinner. 2. I saw you in the park yesterday. You were sitting on the grass and reading a book

But we use the past simple to say that one thing happened after another. Example:

1. Leslie was walking along the road when I saw Dave. So I stopped and we had a chat. Read and compare following example:

SIMPLE PAST / PAST PROGRESSIVE

SIMPLE PAST

When Karem arrived, we were having dinner (we had already started dinner before Karen arrived).

When Karen arrived, we had dinner (First Karen arrived and then we had dinner).

Ejemplo: I am learning English language - I was learning English language He is dancing in the party - he was dancing in the party last night We are writing this moment - we were writing yesterday in the afternoon
