    Formal

    正式

Notice how we ask permission to pay compliments on good looks in formal English. This is to ensure that no one gets the wrong idea about your intention.

    • May I be so bold as to compliment your + (dress / hair / outfit / etc.)?

    • May I pay you a compliment? You really look beautiful / handsome / elegant /etc. today.

    • I hope you don't mind, but you are looking beautiful / handsome today.

  • In the following section, Ben is having a brief conversation with his colleague Jane during a coffee break.

Ben: Hi Jane, it was nice of you helping me with the printer, or I couldn’t have finished my report on time.

    Jane: You are welcome.

Complimenting your date helps the date go smoother and allows them to feel comfortable around you. If you are nervous and have trouble thinking of compliments, just consider the things that you enjoy about your date and let them know. As long as you are genuine with what you say, your compliment should be well received. However, make sure to use compliments on appearance sparingly, or it could give the impression that you are superficial, which could undermine your relationship. Now Ben is sitting in a restaurant with his girlfriend Claire.

Ben
